  1. Having a single ruler for an entire continent—or a single service for all cyberspace—can be problematic. All-powerful entity can easily become dictators, and even if they didn't here's no way one ruler can know the needs of a diverse variety of people (unless perhaps if it's )

A better way would be to power with a variety of local, (s)electable rulers—the more local the better!

  13. Peeps, what are the rules around using #fandom characters as #TestData for your #software ?

I see a lot of #AliceInWonderland in #XMPP docs, but that's public domain in the US. I've also seen mention J.R.R. Tolkien's works in #Perl 's "Camel Book" and once found #JonSnow on some random docs page—both the works about which I believe are still under #copyright . Do all those docs count as #FairUse or...?

  17. @shakil_tcs it's...okay, but there are better options if you're a power notetaker? It has vector drawing (in a propriety format though) and handwriting recognition, brushes, etc. but no layers. I bought it mainly because of the integration, and also Kobo is known to give software updates with imorovements even decades later.

TBH, if I knew the was going to be running a reasonable mainline Linux so soon, I'd probably have gone with that instead (along with ) :pine64:

  18. Oops, since I'm now hosting the download file manually instead of with Disroot's , it means I'll have to manually track the downloads as well (if I want to keep count) 😬

How does one do that? Is still a thing and does it work with nginx too? I also clear my logs once in a while so I'd ideally put these stats away somewhere first...

  19. @strypey you know what I need? A with an screen! 📱

  21. Is there any browser with an inverse #PrivateBrowsing mode?

Basically, all your browsing history, etc. is store locally but cookies and cache data are forgotten each time, so the outside world sees it as a fresh session but you can still see your own history :firefoxnew:

  25. My grandmother recently got locked out of because her phone broke, and the spare one we had on hand is one WhatsApp has decided is too old to run on 💀

Fortunately, has no such qualms! She's currently keeping up with the family group chat on while others of us use , , and . (Of course, extended family and friends are another matter 😔)

This serves as a reminder that closed apps may close you out—but open protocols have your back forever! :xmpp:

  26. @aaravchen hmm...so the main heavily used service is Mattermost, which is used mainly for texting (not much media).

Then there's also a currently low-traffic (5-10 visitors/day) website with lots of images and to track the stats.

Now that you mention it, a disk I/O issue is likely: I've had a few of those in the past, sometimes so bad tthey caused MySQL to crash.
