  1. Coming soon to a feature phone near you!

  2. @praveen @athulvis @mostlyharmless @guusdk @fossunited @ravi @libreinator @sflcin @untrusem The next talk was delivered by @badrihippo, in collaboration with @double_a_runi who was unfortunately unable to attend the conference. While other talks spoke about thing that had happened in the past, this talk focused more on the future. It highlighted the many #UX papercuts faced by #XMPP clients today, and raised an interesting idea: what if we make a “shiny” #XMPP client by hooking up the well-polished UX of #Telegram to an existing XMPP client library?

Interestingly, this is already being attempted by #Convo for the #KaiOS operating system. Can the same be done for larger devices too?

  3. @abhijithb21 ...and weirdly appropriate, because the function I just discovered is helping me develop where the closer we are to pure JavaScript the better 😉

  4. I don't suppose there's a filter to transform a #Convo site into some sort of #WordPress theme? Or a skilled hand who's done it before?

  5. @alcinnz personally I'd want messaging (it's the whole reason I'm making ). But that might be opening a new can of worms, depending on what you have in mind?

What I'm missing from my is that and the ability to book cabs and make online payments (a lowkey must in some Indian cities *cough* Bangalore *cough*)

All these are peripherally "interacting with people on the go" which is what I'd want from my phone

  6. Just launched the new website. Feedback welcome ✨ 🚀

    Happy !!

  7. @amin almost had to scroll up halfway to double-check that the author wasn't myself! 🤪

I'm with you on most things including the (I want one) and (same). I have two and a half already, but am hoping for someone (my future self?) to make a decent RSS reader for it that's more than just an ebook maker.

I think the main difference would be picking for messaging. Hey, with running on maybe I can turn those phones into your dream phone 😉

  8. New version of just dropped. Main highlight: end-to-end support with ! 🔒✨

    git.disroot.org/badrihippo/con

Coming up on the store soon, which will incidentally also fix the currently broken install process from there 🍌

I'm going to now switch over to a more polished UI (based on the excellent work by solid-telekram author Cyan) after which we can let all the small but numerous missing features roll in 🏗️

  9. @raccoon well it's unfortunately not fully open source and does have some Big Tech stuff built in (Google Assistant, Maps)

There's a custom ROM called specifically for the Nokia 8110 Bananaphone that is fully Free Software. There was also for other phones but there's been no news on that for a while 🙁

Other two hurdles I think are app availability and sluggish hardware. As for support...kind of, with , and I'm working on it 😉

    git.disroot.org/badrihippo/con

  10. Putting the final touches on my upcoming presentation about at this weekend 🎨

I'll also bring the Nokia 8110 running the app for you to try out afterwards! :xmpp:

    Will you be there?

  11. @GossiTheDog shucks, I have the following libraries in 😳

    - color-convert
    - color-names
    - ansi-styles
    - debug
    - chalk
    - supports-color

People, be careful when trying to do any transactions using an messaging app on 🤑

  12. This day in history...I mean present: first ever end-to-end encrypted message to be sent from a ?

    git.disroot.org/badrihippo/con

Using on , powered by , , , and :xmpp:

  13. I'm excited to announce that , my messaging app for has received a grant from @nlnet, or, more specifically, @NGIZero! 🎉 🤸

    nlnet.nl/project/Convo/

I can now turn what began as a quick project made in a providential three weeks of free time into an app that can...actually do basic things like add contacts 😅

More importantly, it'll make the open and standardised messaging protocol available to a mobile platform where few large players have dared to tread 👟

  14. Congratulations @badrihippo for getting your
    NLnet grant for #Convo approved!

Under this, Badri will work on a #XMPP client for #KaiOS including #E2EE.

With a few modifications we could turn this into "#Prav for KaiOS/#JioPhone" as well 😀🎉️🤸️

Win win for all of us🫠

    #FreeSoftware

  15. @debacle yeah, that's unfortunate and also unfortunately above my "pay grade" 🙁 (I mean, area of experience)

I see from the hashtags that you're familiar with . There was also by the same people, but it got stalled partly due to getting caught up in the war on . I hope and other apps will make KaiOS interesting and useful enough that people get together to create a version 💭

  16. @jcbrand nice!! Looking forward to seeing how the performance enhancements work out (once I manage to downstream it to )

  17. Is it too late to mention that I'll be giving a talk on and at tomorrow :blobcatadorable:

  18. Incidentally, it's this interoperability that allowed me to make , an app for flip phones 📞

Would anyone use the app? Well, I do, for one! And that's the beauty of open protocols—you don't need to have millions of users convincing a company to add support for their devices: even one person can be enough! (I'm happy to say that Convo is useful for more than one person, as it has been downloaded more than 800 times so far) 💪

    git.disroot.org/badrihippo/con

  19. At the railway station after dinner and sitting under a charging point. The phone is charged, but the power bank isn't 🪫

While waiting, I decided to discharge my earphones a bit 🎧

I recommend for fantasy show/game/movie themed , often with accompanying videos!

By the way, if you're a /#asoiaf fan, see if you can spot whose contact list is shown in one of the screenshots (CW your replies if they're public):

    git.disroot.org/badrihippo/con

  20. I'm finding it oddly satisfying to set up a file for based on the one, but picking out which XEPs I've actually imported/set up for Convo and which are left out :xmpp:

    git.disroot.org/badrihippo/con

This has also made me more aware of what each does and why they're there. And I've started forming mental targets like "Watch out, XEP-0308, I'm coming for *you* next 🎯

  21. Just published a blog post on , my chat app for :xmpp:

    badrihippo.thekambattu.rocks/c

It's basically a rehashing of the README and page with a few added plugs for KaiOS but I suspect it still took me longer to write than the last actual feature I added to the app so go figure 🤷🏾

  22. Shoutout to @jcbrand's which is actually doing all the protocol heavy-lifting. Also, thanks for having a "headless" version which is what made possible!

    conversejs.org

  23. , the app for that I daybeforeyesterdayish and got published to the store yesterday, has already crossed 100 downloads!! 🚀️😮️

    git.disroot.org/badrihippo/con

(It's slowing down now though; the screenshot is from several hours ago and now it's just at 110)
