@praveen @athulvis @mostlyharmless @guusdk @fossunited @ravi @libreinator @sflcin @untrusem The next talk was delivered by @badrihippo, in collaboration with @double_a_runi who was unfortunately unable to attend the conference. While other talks spoke about thing that had happened in the past, this talk focused more on the future. It highlighted the many #UX papercuts faced by #XMPP clients today, and raised an interesting idea: what if we make a “shiny” #XMPP client by hooking up the well-polished UX of #Telegram to an existing XMPP client library?

Interestingly, this is already being attempted by #Convo for the #KaiOS operating system. Can the same be done for larger devices too?

@abhijithb21 ...and weirdly appropriate, because the function I just discovered is helping me develop #Convo where the closer we are to pure JavaScript the better 😉

I don't suppose there's a filter to transform a #Convo site into some sort of #WordPress theme? Or a skilled hand who's done it before?

@alcinnz personally I'd want #XMPP messaging (it's the whole reason I'm making #Convo). But that might be opening a new can of worms, depending on what you have in mind?

What I'm missing from my #KaiOS is that and the ability to book cabs and make online payments (a lowkey must in some Indian cities *cough* Bangalore *cough*)

All these are peripherally "interacting with people on the go" which is what I'd want from my phone

I'm with you on most things including the #Tangara (I want one) and #PocketReform (same). I have two #Kobo and a half already, but am hoping for someone (my future self?) to make a decent RSS reader for it that's more than just an ebook maker.

I think the main difference would be picking #XMPP for messaging. Hey, with #Convo running on #KaiOS maybe I can turn those phones into your dream phone 😉

Coming up on the #BananaHackers store soon, which will incidentally also fix the currently broken install process from there 🍌

I'm going to now switch over to a more polished UI (based on the excellent work by solid-telekram author Cyan) after which we can let all the small but numerous missing features roll in 🏗️

@raccoon well it's unfortunately not fully open source and does have some Big Tech stuff built in (Google Assistant, Maps)

There's a custom ROM called #GerdaOS specifically for the Nokia 8110 Bananaphone that is fully Free Software. There was also #ProjectPris for other phones but there's been no news on that for a while 🙁

Other two hurdles I think are app availability and sluggish hardware. As for #XMPP support...kind of, with #Convo, and I'm working on it 😉

@debacle yeah, that's unfortunate and also unfortunately above my "pay grade" 🙁 (I mean, area of experience)

I see from the hashtags that you're familiar with #GerdaOS. There was also #ProjectPris by the same people, but it got stalled partly due to getting caught up in the war on #Ukraine. I hope #Convo and other apps will make KaiOS interesting and useful enough that people get together to create a #FreeSoftware version 💭

Incidentally, it's this interoperability that allowed me to make #Convo, an #XMPP app for #KaiOS flip phones 📞

Would anyone use the app? Well, I do, for one! And that's the beauty of open protocols—you don't need to have millions of users convincing a company to add support for their devices: even one person can be enough! (I'm happy to say that Convo is useful for more than one person, as it has been downloaded more than 800 times so far) 💪

I'm finding it oddly satisfying to set up a #DOAP file for #Convo based on the #ConverseJS one, but picking out which XEPs I've actually imported/set up for Convo and which are left out :xmpp:

It's basically a rehashing of the README and #Liberapay page with a few added plugs for KaiOS but I suspect it still took me longer to write than the last actual feature I added to the app so go figure 🤷🏾

Shoutout to @jcbrand's #ConverseJS which is actually doing all the protocol heavy-lifting. Also, thanks for having a "headless" version which is what made #Convo possible!
