Côté téléphone, j’ai un Nokia 8110 4G depuis quelques années. C’est un dumbphone sous #KaiOS, avec tethering (partage de connexion ternette). Je l’ai ressorti après avoir perdu mon smartphone… le clavier T9 est devenu capricieux, passer des appels devient hasardeux, mais ça me permet de recevoir des SMS — ne serait-ce pour les services d’authentification.
L’alternative moderne (mais toujours en 4G) serait le Dumber Mini, sous #AOSP + #MicroG :

@alcinnz For more substantive comms, including possibly voice comms, I'd look at:
A small-form-factor laptop. Framework's 12" is quite appealing, and costs roughly the same as a flagship smartphone with far more capability. Someone pointed out an even smaller device recently though I don't recall what it was. You'd run full-powered chat, email, social, etc., on that, without all the tracking of a smartphone.
A SIP phone. Paired with a hotspot (or hotspot-capable device) you could route your voice traffic over that from anywhere. Your hotspot is a low-data / low-risk device, used when necessary (you can leach off any 3rd-party WiFi), and cycled when needed. I'm still looking into how viable this might be.
Question ultimately is: what's your goal / use-case?

@alcinnz I've got Some Thoughts on this topic:
Actually keeping a mobile-network-based phone private is probably an impossible task. You're going to be disclosed by location, by others' inclusion of your number in their (of course: shared) contacts, probably by your billing data, and more. The device will have a known ownership.
Keeping the device secure is also challenging, though more possible if you choose a secure option. Which is probably GrapheneOS (or, possibly, one of the other de-Googled Android forks).
Treating the device as compromised-by-default, and simply seeking to keep its data value to an attacker minimised may be a better option. This is where a KaiOS / S30+ feature phone might come in. These support some basic apps (general utilities, minimal web browser, music, podcasts, Internet radio, etc.), but generally aren't supported by Social, Commerce, Banking, and related apps.
I'd really like a "wipe/restore" capability where it's possible to nuke all on-device state and then restore it, when going through a high-risk environment (border crossings, protests, etc.). I don't think that KaiOS supports this, GrapheneOS may.
There's a pretty good Dumphones community, Jose Briones runs a website and YouTube channel, as well as being a mod on /r/dumbphones (one of my very few reasons for reading Reddit at all these days, though I still won't log in).

@alcinnz Are you familiar with KaiOS by any chance?
That seems to be the leading non-smart OS, it's based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project).
There's also Nokia's S30+ (System30+), and a small set of others (see: https://www.dignited.com/107115/from-nokia-to-samsung-here-are-the-unique-operating-systems-of-feature-phones/ and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feature_phone#Platforms).
Otherwise, many of the leading minimal phones (Light Phone, Punkt) actually run Android or AOSP.
You might consider starting from a base such as GrapheneOS.

#bikepacking #kaios #osm I've just returned from a short bikepacking adventure. In addition to the real-life experiences, I also came up with some new ideas for my map app, which I used while on the road to help me navigate. During the trip, I set my Garmin watch to alert me at intersections. For a broader overview, I used my map app, which also works offline. 1/2

@hpod16 I use #KaiAuth, probably the only option for #KaiOS users!
Also, #oathtool paired with #pass and an alias I copied off the Internet, in the rare occasions when I remember to do it off my laptop itself (I usually just reach for my phone haha)
My #Mobian smartphone has #GnomeAuthenticator, but I don't use it that much

@praveen @athulvis @mostlyharmless @guusdk @fossunited @ravi @libreinator @sflcin @untrusem The next talk was delivered by @badrihippo, in collaboration with @double_a_runi who was unfortunately unable to attend the conference. While other talks spoke about thing that had happened in the past, this talk focused more on the future. It highlighted the many #UX papercuts faced by #XMPP clients today, and raised an interesting idea: what if we make a “shiny” #XMPP client by hooking up the well-polished UX of #Telegram to an existing XMPP client library?
Interestingly, this is already being attempted by #Convo for the #KaiOS operating system. Can the same be done for larger devices too?

I added a new tab to my RSS-Mastodon -Reader for #KaiOS that lists all images from the feeds. The app is a PWA that can be hosted entirely on its own; it consists only of a front end that stores the feeds locally.

How did you do that with chat groups? Are they identities that only exist as long as there is an admin user, or do they exist until they are deleted? @alcinnz personally I'd want #XMPP messaging (it's the whole reason I'm making #Convo). But that might be opening a new can of worms, depending on what you have in mind?
What I'm missing from my #KaiOS is that and the ability to book cabs and make online payments (a lowkey must in some Indian cities *cough* Bangalore *cough*)
All these are peripherally "interacting with people on the go" which is what I'd want from my phone

I dream of a flip phone that can run postmarketOS and make calls over Wi-Fi and Jabber.
Why? Because flip phones aren't expected to be a place where you run "apps." If you say "I have a flip phone," your bank won't hassle you to get the app anymore.
postmarketOS does have some support for feature phones. It can run on the devices that come with KaiOS.

I'm with you on most things including the #Tangara (I want one) and #PocketReform (same). I have two #Kobo and a half already, but am hoping for someone (my future self?) to make a decent RSS reader for it that's more than just an ebook maker.
I think the main difference would be picking #XMPP for messaging. Hey, with #Convo running on #KaiOS maybe I can turn those phones into your dream phone 😉
