Unfortunately, many people have the impression that "being small with a physical numpad" and "capable of running complex applications" are mutually exclusive resulting in most manufacturers not giving good specs to such devices. So in practice #KaiOS phones are closer to feature phones 😕

@disaster2life I mean #KaiOS is good if you want to also make and receive phone calls/SMS or create a 4G WiFi hotspot on said portable hackable device?

But if those are not important there'd be other options too (check #Beepy and #WiPhone!) :raspberrypi:

For me, it was the one device I'd carry around (until I got #Mobian on my #PocoF1, but my #Nokia2720Flip is still 💯 when I'm not in the city and apt to be blocked by QR-coded React-bloated ticketing systems or something)

Друзья! Много ли платформ вы знаете, где для написания пользовательских приложений используется стек… веб-технологий, причём это единственный нативный способ писать программы? Услышав о HTML5 + CSS + JS, на ум приходит разве что webOS — которая используется в современных телевизорах от LG (а ранее использовалась ещё и в Palm Pre — уникальный смартфон, единственный в своём роде), а олды вспомнят ещё и про FireFox OS, в которой вся оболочка (включая многозадачность, шторку уведомлений и все приложения) также была реализована на JS. Но ни webOS, ни FFOS в своё время не суждено было стать массовыми ОС на смартфонах: сказывались аппаратные ограничения устройств, да и проблемы с портированием уже существующих приложений с других платформ (например, игр). Однако несколько лет назад, проект FireFox OS был форкнут и на свет появилась новая система, предназначенная для… умных кнопочных телефонов с LTE! И имя ей — KaiOS. Вероятно, многие мои читатели слышали о ней и о новых умных кнопочниках от Nokia. Но что из себя представляет система под капотом и чем она может быть интересна гику? Читайте в новом материале!

I got a Nokia 2780 Flip phone as our "home phone" for around the house and for my kid to bring with him in situations where we might be separated. It's very satisfying to use! Physical buttons, T9 texting, and it even has a rudimentary Google Maps app. 3 days of battery life, to boot. It runs KaiOS. Great call quality, signal strength, and that pleasant Nokia ringtone.

Bueno, como nobleza obliga, luego de casi un año y medio de usar este teléfono, tengo varios comentarios. Voy a empezar por lo malo, al principio todo funcionaba super bien hasta que luego de varios meses de usarlo, comencé a notar que el diccionario es demasiado lento, es como que no le da o algo, para la velocidad a la que escribo, que tampoco es la gran cosa. Este factor, es casi un parteaguas, porque es justamente lo que yo estoy buscando recuperar de un teléfono, el que sea instantáneo, que no piense, que aprieto y haga. Eso se ve fácilmente con los teléfonos tontos o con sistemas operativos Real Time o RTOS como el ThreadX. KaiOS definitivamente no es instantáneo, cosa que me molesta mucho y que se disimula bastante bien al comienzo. Otra cosa que se volvió muy lenta, es navegar entre los contactos, los de GerdaOS (sistema que nunca pude instalar), dicen que la aplicación de contactos de GerdaOS es mucho más ágil, en fin. Lo otro más relacionado con el hardware que me decepcionó un poco (pero menos que la parte de software), es que las recubiertas de goma se comenzaros a despegar llegando a los 10 meses, 1 año de uso. No es mucho problema porque las volví a pegar con LaGotita, pero lo que si no se puede arreglar, es el otro tema y que es sobre los pulsadores de las teclas, a veces no marcan por más que tenes el feedback sonoro y táctil de la misma. Esto es una mierda porque pensas que escribiste, pero te falta una letra. Después todo lo demás anda bien. La señal del teléfono es inmejorable, se escucha muy bien, la batería le dura bien, tiene para compartir wifi y para tener apps básicas de KaiOS de las cuales uso un par con frecuencia. Pero para mí lo más importante es cuando estas en la calle, en la apurada, resolviendo cosas, que el teléfono escriba bien, que sea ágil buscando contactos y que responda ágilmente, cosa que no ocurre yá, desde hace un tiempo. Por lo tanto mi búsqueda sigue, pero esta vez directamente en teléfonos con sistemas operativos en tiempo real como TreadX, por más que no sean libres, no se si habrá libres. De todas maneras, esto está enrabado con otro tema que vengo pensando desde hace tiempo, que es problematizar el general purpose computing o informática de propósito general, que es básicamente no pretender que cada cosa que usemos sea una computadora encubierta, con un sistema operativo, que tiene que hacer mil cosas para hacer cosas simples. Hoy decidí hacer la prueba de tener el fono desconectado del wifi y los datos, salvo cuando los fuera a usar, realice y recibí llamadas y mensajes de texto y MMS siempre con el brillo al 100% durante el día y 70% durante la noche. A las 2am lo había desenchufado del cargador con el 100%, a las 8:30am cuando me levante, todavía tenia 100% y ahora a las 23hs, tiene 91% luego de todo el día, por lo que supongo que cuando sean las 2am en un rato, va a tener del orden del 90% de carga restante. La batería es de 1700mah. KaiOS realmente es algo más. El teléfono es un Plum Ram 9 y es espectacular, simple, robusto, liviano y compacto. Había olvidado lo rápido y sin mirar que podía escribir en un teclado T9, nada puede reemplazar el feedback de los botones, llamar y cortar con un botón, de forma instantánea.
