I switch between an #epaper screen (which has to be light mode) and a regular laptop screen (which is dark mode) so I use the "system" setting a lot (which in my opinion a website should default to anyway, or even have as the only option as @mathew pointed out)

Got an ESP32-S3 with a big e-paper display and wanted something useful to flash on it.
Wrote some firmware that listens on USB serial and renders whatever text you pipe to it — basically turning the screen into a physical TTY device. Auto-scaling fonts, zero power while idle, no backlight staring at me from across the room.

they created a "new" display, apparently with a different controller, and different SPI pins, but kept the revision number the same! (There are two variants of "Rev1.2")

Gestern haben wir wie versprochen etwas Ordnung rein gebracht. Wir hatten bereits ein Regal, das jede Woche neu gelabelt wurde mit Daten, wann Dinge gefunden wurden. Ab jetzt aktualisiert sich das selbst und gibt Anweisungen, ab wann Dinge zu entfernen sind. Unsere Getränkeübersicht hängt wieder prominent direkt am Kühli und unsere Snacks haben jetzt auch Preis- und Bestandsanzeigen dank #openepaperlink bzw. einem #ESP32 und einem #EPaper Display.

Abfahrmonitor:
Ich habe ich ein kleines E-Ink-Display gebaut, das direkt neben meiner Haustür hängt und mir live Bus- und Bahnabfahrten für meinen Weg zur Arbeit anzeigt. Jeden Morgen verlasse ich das Haus, fahre mit dem Bus zum Bahnhof und von dort aus zu immer wechselnden Kundenstandorten. Ich könnte vor dem Losgehen auf mein Handy schauen, aber meistens vergesse ich das – und bin dann überrascht, wenn ein Bus oder Zug verspätet oder ausfällt.
Dieser Monitor löst das Problem für mich: Das Display ist immer sichtbar, wenn ich zur Tür rausgehe, also sehe ich die aktuellen Abfahrtszeiten auf einen Blick. Kein Handy mehr rausholen, keine Anschlussverbindungen verpassen, keine Überraschungen.
Es ist batteriebetrieben und basiert auf einem Lilygo T5 4,7"-E-Ink-Display mit ESP32-S3, eingebaut in ein selbst entworfenes 3D-gedrucktes Gehäuse. Die Firmware wurde von Grund auf neu speziell für dieses Projekt entwickelt. Sie verbindet sich mit der lokalen VRR-ÖPNV-API, holt Echtzeit-Abfahrtsdaten für meine Bushaltestelle und den nahegelegenen Bahnhof, aktualisiert tagsüber alle zwei Minuten und schläft nachts, um Strom zu sparen. Das E-Ink-Display verbraucht Energie nur beim Aktualisieren, sodass es mit einer einzigen Akkuladung sehr lange läuft.

I've been using TCL NXTPAPER phones for years now and they are very reliable, not to mention some of the few devices in the market to offer a screen that avoids eyestrain which are actually usable. I strongly recommend giving them a try.

Päätin lopultakin selvittää, miksi rakentamani kodin sääasemat lakkasivat lähettämästä lämpötila yms. tietoja näytölle. Syitä olikin kaksi.
1) DNS (tietenkin, aina), koska olin muutellut kotiverkon asetuksia.
2) Parvekkeen mittarin ESP8266 oli "hajonnut" ja korjaantui vaihtamalla. -
