  1. Anyone recommend a video app for Android?
Yeah, sounds weird, every phone comes with the ability to record video, right?
Problem is the lack of settings, I'm pretty sure the videos I'm uploading here are far bigger than they need to be, I don't need 4K here, I don't need anything fancy, 1080 is fine, heck 720 would prolly be fine here, but I don't get any control on my phone. I do have an editing app that could prolly do it, but it'd be easier if'n it was just built into the recording app in the first place.

  6. looking for a #foss program that allows me to draw in a pdf without annoying "splitting it into pages -> exporting it as an image -> doing the drawing -> converting back to pdf -> unite all the page-pdfs" workflow.

I just want to use my drawing tablet to fill in some forms that were made for printing the pages.

    any recommendations?

    EDIT: xournalpp works for me!

  7. Hiya nerds,

I need a software recommendation. I'm looking for a file comparison tool, sort of like Meld for GNOME but a little more tailored to the experience of reconciling duplicate files on multiple hard drives.

    The requirements
    - #FOSS / #FLOSS
    - Compares Files, tells you if it is on Drive A vs Drive B

    The Nice To Haves
    - Recursive
    - Bitwise comparison (in case the paths or file names aren't exact)
    - Multiple drives? Might be a stretch.
    - MacOSX compatible, but failing that, Linux only is fine too

    The Use Case
My partner has multiple hard drives that have acted as her ad-hoc digital backup solution for years. But not every drive has everything on it, and she's pretty sure some of it is redundant, sometimes even within the same drive.

She'd like to slim down her storage needs and KNOW for a fact where and what she has, and how many copies.

  12. Going nutty, anyone know of a free (preferably open source) remote support app for android? I'm on a Linux PC but need to support an Android device in another location.

Love RustDesk but it has to be side loaded and I'll be damned if I can get remote input to work on android.

  17. Is there a software for Linux (preferably FOSS) that is similar to Taskheat? Taskheat is a program that allows you to visualize your tasks as a flowchart (which is great for identifying the next actions for a project). Making an actual flowchart using vector design tools would not fit the bill; Taskheat does this efficiently.

    Hi, I'm looking for a #FreeSoftware #SelfHosted #TicketingSystem.

The one main feature I need: Users should be able to send me tickets without having to register an account.

I went through this list: github.com/awesome-selfhosted/
But none of the websites mention, whether users can send tickets without an account or provide a user-side demo.

    Other features I want:
    * either option to leave contact info or custom link to track progress of ticket or add/edit information
    * option to register an account if you want to
    * no AI integration
    * not too hard to self-host

    Possible workarounds I would accept:
    * a shared guest user account with publicly available login info so anyone can create tickets - but without the ability to edit the profile and add personal information or any other privacy/security flaws
    * login via Mastodon or other Fediverse account (since Fediverse users will be the main target audience)

    Thanks

  20. What do you use to back up local files from Linux to external hard drive?
I have been using rsnapshot, but maybe there are better solutions out there?
Does anyone have an experience with btrfs and snapshots? Do you trust it?

  22. @academicchatter
What tools do you use to manage the literature watch in your lab?

I feel that since it works best in collaboration, a plateform similar to a forum × reddit-like × mastodon-like would be great, but with this specific functions:

Posts would be centered around an article, ideally identified by DOI, and when you are about to share one, it checks that it hasn't already been shared.

Pre-defined tags would be used to classify by topic.

  23. #fediask I'm looking for a software kind of like a mailing list but when one list member responds to the original poster, the email is sent from the mailing list address... Any ideas where I might start looking?

  25. I'm looking for recommendations for free (as in gratis) offline photo collage software for Windows.

#PhotoscapeX does a pretty good job, but the free version is limited to just a few arrangements per amount of pictures inserted, and doesn't allow saving the project unless you upgrade to the pro version (which is about 409 NOK, which is a bit too steep for the few added features that I'd be interested in).

  26. How lightweight is ? Is there a super-light-weight bare-bones alternative I can use on my site?

  27. Anybody want to recommend a #FLAC -compatible music player app? Looking for something for Win10 and Android. #softwarerecommendation

  32. But hey, I'll ask here too, would you like to recommend an Android web browser? It needs to be modern and actively updated, have proper tab support including saving and restoring previously opened tabs, and ad blocking. A dark mode wouldn't go awry, either. #webbrowsers #browsers #mobilebrowsers #softwarerecommendation
