    RoninRiot take ⚔️

The show didn’t completely change that—early GOT was still brutal, political, and morally gray.

But the books went even deeper into the ugliness of power, war, marriage, and nobility.

That’s the debate: Books or TV—who understood Westeros better? 👀

  2. Look, I've been a snobby book fan in my time (most recently as like a week ago), but I thought that was a pretty great hour and a bit of television.

Was it the exact story that I'd like to see George tell on screen? No. But it was still damn good 'fun' and felt like the culmination of a lot of things that needed wrapping up, and for the most part they did it well.

I've really enjoyed season three. I thought the show was close to being a write off before 301 aired, but they've pulled it back and I'm very excited to see how they close this up in two years.

The show and the books aren't the same thing. That goes for GoT and HotD, and I imagine it'll have a similar bearing on AKotSK as we move forward with that. And you know what? That can be okay.

Provided what they adapt and change is well done of course; change for changes sake doesn't necessarily mean it's good.

  3. Won't lie.

2026 was a real important year for TV/ASOIAF and with two episodes of #HouseOfTheDragonHBO to go, I think we're going out in a significantly better spot than we entered the year.

#AKnightOfTheSevenKingdoms was an immediate and absolute success. It is beloved by general audiences and book nerds. And that was far from a guarentee when the show was greenlit.

House of the Dragon season 3 has managed to write the ship after a really poorly received ending to season 2. It's not perfect, and it' still struggles from the weight of it's own poor story-telling and HBO's meddling, but for the most part it's doing a great job of keeping audiences invested; even if I think they've made some bat-shit creative decisions.

All in all, I think we've got to be very happy with the year as we've got it. Another poor season of HOTD would have basically ended any hope of a satisfying conclusion to that story, and a poorly received AKOTSK would have been death to any notion of a second season; and potentially general audience interest in the world of Ice and Fire on TV.

In summery: We are so back.

  4. uh, so if you're a fan of A Song of Ice and Fire and want a bit of new canon, you might want to read the summary of The Mad King production currently playing in London 👀

  5. It's been *a bit* since #ASOIAF nerds had any new content to obsess over. However, it seems like that is at an end with the stage-play finally being viewed by audiences.

    reddit.com/r/HouseOfTheDragon/

There's plenty of other threads on Reddit too, namely on the r/ASOIAF sub. Definitely check those out if you're the sort of person who's into this shit.

The content creators are going to absolutely feast on these details, and honestly I can't wait for it. It's almost akin to an entire new book coming out in terms of Lore and backstory.

  6. CW: House of the Dragon 306 spoilers

One of my bugbears regarding #HouseOfTheDragonHBO is how the show utterly ruined the character of Criston Cole. They wrote him all wrong, and the audience isn't mature enough to think him anything other than the worlds least successful incel.

So it was very nice to see him get an action scene before...you know. Was it the full butchering we expected? Not even close, but given they're obviously worried about ££ and time, it could have been worse.

The man truly was a force to be reckoned with. He's held in high regard by Jaime fucking Lannister for Pete's sake. Great commander, middling Hand, insane warrior.

That said. How the fuck do you not include the "no songs" line. It's about as close as you come to anything in Fire and Blood being iconic...and you just... didn't use it.

  7. Dark wings. Dark words.

Watch out for spoilers boys and girls. They're floating around in the aether and the will ruin your day.

  8. For every Blackwater and Hardholm we had four or five dialogue heavy plot driven episodes. Without those 'slow' episodes the episodes like BotB don't mean as much.

You fell in love with early #GameOfThrones not because of the one episode a season of pure spectacle, but because of the 8 episodes of delicately written, impressively filmed and beautifully acted drama that leads up to it.

The spectacle is great, don't get me wrong, but the bread and butter of George's world, of #ASOIAF and of the HBO GoT Universe itself will always be characters, dialogue and plot.

So whenever I see we've a slower paced episode of #GoT, #AKnightOfTheSevenKingdoms or even #HouseOfTheDragonHBO I settle in for a solid 50 minutes of what made me fall in love with this world in the first place.

I can't understand people who moan about the plot building episodes. Did you completely miss what makes these shows tick?

And yes, I am aware of how many # I've used in this post. Ma bad.

  10. The writing still sometimes makes no sense, but I've really enjoyed being 'back' in the world of #Westeros with the most recent episodes of #HotD

Season two was an absolute disaster, largely because of how it ended; moving the final two episodes of that season to the front of season three was a mistake... although it did certainly help season three find it's footing very quickly.

I don't like how much the show has diverged from it's source material, but I've accepted it for what it is. I just want to be entertained at this point. They're doing their own thing and whilst I think some of that own thing is downtime bad, they can still make it entertaining. That's all I ask.

  11. CW: Minor HotD spoiler hinting at things to come.

People gotta stop watching #HotD like it's a team sport. These arseholes are exactly that, arseholes. Even the ones you think you like are gonna do some shit that you'll find irredeemable. Essentially, if you think this story has a happy ending, you've not been paying attention.

  12. Seven hells!

Two great episodes of #HouseOfTheDragon back to back.

Imagine how we'd feel about season two if we ended with these episodes rather than needlessly pushing them into season 3. Ridiculous decision by the HBO exec team and one that really hurt the show as a whole.

Still, fucking fantastic episode of television. And yes, I know it's not book accurate, but we're not going to get that so I'm just hoping for good time, and this episode had that and more.

  13. The queens/kings of #Westeros are really starting to bore me! I feel as if I’m watching #Dallas, only with more bloodshed. I have fond memories of the 1st #ASoIaF books, including #TheHedgeKnight, but #HouseoftheDragon is so tiresomely pseudo-dramatic.

  14. CW: SPOILERS FOR HOTD 3x02 - Pre release Leaks. Continue with caution.

I'm expecting Otto to die during this season, but if the rumours around his demise coming as early as the next episode (302) are to be beleived, then I'm very dissapointed indeed.

Through all the shows many faults, Otto (and Rhys Ifans) have constantly been the best thing going for the show.

To essentially remove him for the entirety of season 2, and then have him reappear and then die in the same episode of season 3 is a massive waste of talent.

I'm not even sure how they'll convince the audience on this one either. They had the Kings Grandfather locked up in Kingslanding for weeks and no one, not on single sole noticed or let it slip? Come on now.

  15. CW: House of the Dragon 301 spoilers.

Okay #ASOIAF fans. What do we think about episode one of #HouseOfTheDragon season 3?

It would appear they've gone off book again. I think we need to accept that they're telling a different story to the one in the text. And I guess that's okay.... provided it's done well (something that I'd argue hasn't happened so far).

That kiss was...no joke, I looked away. I've sat through some awkward stuff before but holy Jesus that was something else.

Issues with plot stuff aside, I thought the actual stuff with Jace at the end was beautifully shit, acted and directed. I just wish the writers had given us more of a reason to give a shit about the potential heir to the throne.

  16. When you thought #HouseOfTheDragon was back in a week but it's actually back in like 30 hours.

  17. More time has now passed between the publication of #ADanceOfDragons and today than the publication of #AGameOfThrones and Dance.

Which is kinda, well sad I guess?

We're also quickly approaching the 30th anniversary of the series as a whole. Crazy to think I was eight years old when this stuff was first released into the world.

I'm now a 38 year old father of two.

  18. I’m getting a bit carried away, there are still a few months left in the year & I’m only halfway through, but #ADropofCorruption is likely to be my #Fantasy book of 2026! I haven’t come across a series this brilliant since the first #ASoIaF books. I’m looking forward to every new chapter! #booksky

  19. Will I bitch about this forever? YES. That money and cast could have been spent on a much better show.

  20. I think it's such a shame that the numpty running that show didn't understand that 1) you listen to GRRM at all times, he knows best & 2) you're supposed to run two stories at the same time in a framing like this: the immediate short term conflict + the overarching world, it's influence, and the long term consequences of that short term conflict.

  21. House of the Dragon finally hired an editor for their trailers! Now it looks like there might be a half a story in there.

  22. #HouseOfTheDragon season two was a massive let down for me, and yet I can't help but feel super excited to be disappointed once again. Bring on June.

  23. Watching The House of Dragon for the first time. Very interesting first episode. The remix of the original theme song and the Place where Ned will lose his head were very impactful in the first few minutes.

  24. #introduction
i came here from tumblr after the last update (which they managed to roll back before i managed to write this introduction).

i am slowly making my way through #smallville and #ds9. I also really like #voyager .
I also watch quite a few anime like #apothecaryDiaries, #OshiNoKo or #dungeonMeshi, but i also like some #isekai or #villainess storylines from time to time.
I read quite a bit, but fandomwise only #asoiaf is really relevant, and a lot of fanfics of course.
I am also still a bit into some of the things from my childhood like #starWars, #naruto or #yugioh.
I might post some fic recs from time to time and the occasional gif.

  25. Got a jackpot.

I ordered a copy of 'World of Ice and Fire' from Thriftbooks last Saturday for $11.

It's the premium, $50 hardcover edition, fully illustrated, and it's huge, and in amazing condition.

    An absolute score.
