For some reason this rock in Utah made me think about some guy in Nebraska.

@rationaldoge after a bit of searching I found a map in a screen grab of what I’m sure was a very exciting 5 hour meeting of government officials.
It was much easier to find in this video than I expected. There was a little ask AI button that answered the question “At what point is devils lake discussed?” to which it replied “The discussion about Devil's Lake State Park begins at (1:27:20).”

Happy #FungusFriday to all who celebrate. I found this #fairyRing in the woods along the #IceAgeTrail this morning. Quite a surprise.
-
@Jimijamflimflam I had never seen these until about three years ago. Since then I’ve seen one or two each year. Until last weekend. I’ve seen at least several dozen of them while hiking along the #IceAgeTrail in Indian Lake County Park and the Lodi Marsh segment.
-
I think the Google #streetView camera was mounted on the car backwards when it went through #Belleville #Wisconsin. I was first tipped off when clicking on the forward arrow took me backwards.

Related, what’s going on in that area that there’s a steady plume of steam or smoke? I was on the #IceAgeTrail near here this morning and was put off by apparent pollution spewing from near here.
-
Today I found the Table Bluff segment of the Ice Age Trail, just a few minutes from home. What a wonderful trail.
-
I’ve paid for #AllTrails every year for years, recently $36. I’ve submitted trail reviews and submitted new trails that became popular.
Several of the features that I’ve used are no longer available unless I pay more than 2x what my current subscription costs. Every time they prod me to upgrade I’m reminded that I’m unhappy with them. And I’m annoyed that I have to deal with this frequent ad in an app I pay for.
After turning off auto renew, a 30% off code came in email. Pffft. Try $36.
-
How tempting is this? No bids yet, $25 minimum. Must pick up near Madison WI.

I think I may need some #CuteWinterBoots on #Jan29.
-
@Pollinators @eabolden in nearby #DaneCounty #cranes are commonly seen. This couple was particularly interested in pecking at my car tires in #Middleton #Wisconsin in September of 2021.

Is the unemployment rate in #Springfield high? Or was there an influx of #Hatian people due to there being a bunch of jobs there that couldn’t be filled with the extant population?
If the influx of people just satisfies employment demand, how is it that no one is pointing the blame at city and regional planning for failing to scale investments in housing, schools, and infrastructure with employment capacity?
Seems they asked for the growth. https://www.springfieldtwp.org/JEDZ

While last week's #OxideAndFriends was about #CockroachDB's license change, a very large part of it was @dap and @bcantrill discussing the pain that can be felt by choosing software based on community sentiment rather than thorough testing. The point is driven home in a discussion of using #Postgres beyond its design limits. This is mostly in the first half of the episode.
-
@thenextsummit while I fully agree that a phone should not be the only navigation device you have on lightly traveled trails, the article loses credibility by suggesting that a map and compass or any GPS device is better than a phone. I download maps to my phone (typically #AllTrails and #OrganicMaps) and go into airplane mode when I disconnect the charging cable. My iPhone screen is much brighter than my old Garmin and the apps provide much better functionality. Map and compass for backup.

It sure would be nice if #LizCheney would find a way to make #OathAndHonor available as a podcast for free. It would seem to be a great way to further the reach of her #NeverTrump agenda.
-
Today I got paper mail alerting me of a service that would alert me of property fraud involving my home. The envelope and letter look to be from #DaneCounty #Wisconsin. Remembering that the first Nigerian Prince scam I saw came by postal mail, I decided to try to verify this information by looking at my county's .gov site.

@oxidecomputer when is the #OxideAndFriends episode on crucible happening?
-
Good news! I don’t have any aspen or willow trees, which are favorite foods of spongy moths.
Bad news! I have oak, birch, crabapple, tamarack, and linden trees. These are also favorite foods of spongy moths.

It’s a shame that all #Telo trucks come with a huge dent on each side. They should really figure out what is causing that. 😉
I hope that something like this forces change in pickup the market.

I'm thinking of taking a trip to #Colorado to do some day #hiking in the second half of June. I'm looking for goldilocks trails: mostly free of snow, but not blazing hot. Bonus points for #wildFlowers. What area and trails do you recommend?
To avoid extra days of driving, I need to not be too far west of the continental divide. I'll have the dogs, so RMNP is out. Plan to rent a condo or house. Currently considering staying in #WinterPark, but unsure of the snow situation on nearby trails.

And now for something completely different, tonight is a great night for #wormWatching.

@david while we have concluded raidz is not to blame here, I figured it may be worth mentioning that I did a talk on this work while at #Joyent.
Slides: https://us-east.manta.joyent.com/Joyent_Dev/public/docs/2019-06-RAIDZ_on_small_blocks.pdf
Video: https://youtu.be/sTvVIF5v2dwContrary to what I predicted back then, today’s NVMe SSDs pretty much all present as 512n, not as 4Kn.

I came across a new-to-me plant while #hiking the #LodiMarsh segment of the #IceAgeTrail in #Wisconsin to celebrate #marshMadness. Apparently these yellow flowers are from #skunkCabbage. First flowers of the season!

I've seen a bunch of mentions of fissures that are up to a few meters across, but pretty much nothing on the one that is about 200 meters across.
This is a screenshot from a video from NTV, a Turkish TV channel. Is NTV a reliable source?

I’m looking forward to seeing the National #SnowSculpting Championship works at #LakeGeneva #Wisconsin next weekend. https://www.visitlakegeneva.com/winterfest/teams/
I last went in 2019 but after judging with a bit of warm weather. Not all of the sculptures survived well, but I think a crumbling sculpture really captured a mood.

A while back while developing some #SPDK code, I was sorely missing the ability to:
ASSERT(MUTEX_HELD(...))
The more I dug into the intersection of pthread mutexes and SPDK's concurrency model, the more I realized that there was a lot of room for improvement. This all led to SPDK's new spinlock implementation. A blog post with the details is at https://spdk.io/spdk_spinlock/2023/01/04/spdk_lock/.
Much of the new behavior is inspired by #Solaris mutexes.

I have a trip coming up that will have at least 32 hours of driving. I may need to take the scenic route to get through the best suggestions from #OxideAndFriends recent episode.

I've been seeing pictures of this new #Canoo #EV and keep thinking that it looks almost as safe as the 1973 #VWbus that I drove for a while in high school. Let's just say that vehicle was proven to not keep all four on the ground when you would like. :)
Anyway, my mind has been changed. This thing still looks goofy but, oh my, does it like to keep its tires on the ground! If I get one, I shall name it #Weeble.

@emohn right by #BanffNationalPark are several others: #YohoNationalPark, #KootenayNationalPark, #JasperNationalPark, and #GlacierNationalPark. If you have time, it may be worth checking them out too.
-
@larsmb I’ve found #ExOfficio’s #BugsAway line of clothing to be very effective at keeping bugs at bay. My bugsaway shirt greatly reduces #mosquitoes around my head. Not sure if #permethrin embedded in clothing fabric is safer than #DEET on the skin, but it certainly feels a lot less gross.

@ed FWIW Johnson’s Nursery near #Milwaukee produces a strain of #musclewood known for brighter red fall color. They are good to work with as a homeowner if you live in the area and are a major supplier for municipal and commercial landscaping at least in the upper Midwest. Please plant #nativeTrees.
-
@ed the muscle like look of the trunk and branches of #musclewood trees is great. I’ve planted several of them in my yard and they seem to do well. I’ve run across them in the woods only rarely. There’s a spot along #LostCanyonTrail in #GovernorDodgeStatePark in #Wisconsin that has a pretty good patch of them.

Within the first few days that I was really using #Mastodon, I was thinking that a #fediverse server and clients that supported #GPS traces well could make a lot of the #hiking posts usable for more than oohing and aahing.
I present rough draft 0.1 of #Pathodon. Is this something that others would like? Is something like this already in the works? Who else would work on this with me?

@Freedom2B @poxonus @zhivi #Wisconsin county roads are named things like County Road A (literally, A) but may have two or three letters. The good folks near #Rosendale could think of no name better than County Road KKK. The sign at highway 26 calls it Triple Kay Road - they couldn’t be bothered to fully rename the road.

@[email protected] There's some great work done here, which is sorely needed. Having been working on #spdk for a while, I wonder how much benefit there may be message passing such that IO for a particular dataset is always done by the same CPU thread or a very small group of them if that's too much work for one. I'd need to refresh my memory of #zfs internals, but I think this could reduce lock contention and perhaps eliminate some locks.
-
@b0rk's threads about debuggers made me nostalgic for #mdb on Solaris and illumos. Currently I'm working on #SPDK, which seems to be only supported on Linux and #FreeBSD . Ever so hopeful, I tried:
[mgerdts@freebsd ~/spdk]$ mdb ./test/unit/lib/bdev/bdev.c/bdev_ut
mdb: no target ctor: No error: 0😦
That's probably a pretty big hint that there is much #yakShaving to do to get the to level of functionality I'd want. Prolly better to write some gdb commands in python.
-
Huh. Somehow I’m first on the list of speakers at the SPDK Virtual Summit 2022. The pressure! If you are interested in #SPDK this is the place to be in a couple weeks.

What better #introduction to #fosstodon than a look at what I think was my first #foss contribution. I’d like to apologize now for the unbounded memory allocation bug I introduced. Oops.
https://github.com/php/php-src/commit/72f675be5005f09c048155b85b5d6efd7341f6e0
Since then I’ve done a bunch of #sysadmin work (mostly #Solaris) followed by OS (#solaris #illumos #smartos #zfs) development and more recently various storage stuff (#nvme #nvmeof #roce #spdk #bluefield #dpu #smb).
I love #hiking through the #wilderness and other natural areas.
