Reminder for the #WHY2025 attendees: There are two main chemicals used in mosquito/insect repellents, #DEET and #icaridin (aka picaridin). Both are about equally effective.

In case you don't have a preference for either, my recommendation is icaridin. That's because DEET is a solvent and can damage plastics, synthetic fabrics, and other things. I've once permanently damaged my tent simply by touching it with DEET on my fingers.

Also, DEET interacts with sunscreen, making it ⅓ less effective.

Know what's worse than DEET? Mosquitos.

Sure, DEET is nasty, but it's really effective.

Spending time in the woods is a good reminder why I need it.

So I bought bug spray based on #icaridin to try out because I'd like to not be bothered by #insects all the time when I'm outside but also not smell.

I bought it explicitly because the active ingredient supposedly does not smell.

I previously thought that bug sprays had to stink but apparently, that's not the case and a 2018 meta review found that #icaridin is at least as effective as the smelly #DEET.

I just tried the one I bought and they added a strong fucking lemon scent.

@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs I live in Canada, and we have plenty of mosquitoes. Wearing dark colours can make you more attractive. Swatting them away does nothing. Mosquitoes are attracted primarily by the chemicals produced by your skin biome. DEET is the only thing that I've found that works reliably.

I needed to get out, so I did 😊

I spent a lot of time trying to take nice pictures while mosquitoes were hitting on me, although they did not bite thanks to DEET and permethrin-treated shirt 😀 Much better on the water, but on the trail, I basically needed to jog 😅

This creek runs along I-476, but once I am on the water, the freeway noises disappear, and all I can feel is a beautiful creek in the wood😊

This place got additional soccer fields recently. Due to recent weather, this drainage area has been filled with water for a while. This big water puddle has no fish, but a lot of bug activities 😉 It may dry up at some point. It seems to be a large mosquito incubator 🤔 These mosquitoes attack me every time I come here for my son’s soccer training 😑

I could actually do fly casting practice, although I need a lot of DEET😅

Watering plants at the most important corner of my backyard, where I have Myoga 😉 They are growing well, hopefully providing us with nice condiments 😋

@larsmb I’ve found #ExOfficio’s #BugsAway line of clothing to be very effective at keeping bugs at bay. My bugsaway shirt greatly reduces #mosquitoes around my head. Not sure if #permethrin embedded in clothing fabric is safer than #DEET on the skin, but it certainly feels a lot less gross.
