  1. I went back to the woods to check on the giant mushrooms I found ( c.im/@cetan/117333487781418258 ) only to encounter a found odor and, after some searching, a recently deceased whitetail deer. Later in the day the wind shifted and now the smell of death and decay is washing over the house. Its not on my property so I'm not keen on paying to have it removed (it will be several hundred dollars) but we also don't want to spend the next several weeks with the house closed up when the temps are near perfect. The land where it died is technically owned by the neighborhood, so I guess we'll call the company tasked with managing it but I suspect we won't get very far with them.
This past Thursday the local coyote population raised a ruckus right behind the house, so I'm thinking these two events are related.

  2. Spotted this Fawn, youngster on my early evening walk. It was ~70 yards away. Had to use the camera zoom to see if my eyes were lying or not. Yup! that really is a deer lying down in the field😆

  3. Predicting Disease Spread From Host Movement Data - Chronic Wasting Disease In North America As A Case Study

“Does host movement play a role in the spread of chronic wasting disease?🦌
Chronic wasting disease (CWD), a fatal neurodegenerative prion disease affecting deer, elk, and other cervids, has now been detected in 37 U.S. states and 5 Canadian provinces. Understanding how the disease spreads across landscapes is critical to managing it, and one hypothesis is that regions where deer move long distances, as with seasonal migrations, there should be faster disease spread.
A new USGS study tests this hypothesis. Using published GPS deer movement and CWD spread data, scientists built statistical models predicting how fast CWD should spread based on the migration and dispersal patterns of mule deer and white-tailed deer. They then compared these predictions to two decades of observed CWD detection data across North America (2005 to 2022).
The results were only partially consistent with expectations:
💠Western epicenters with highly mobile mule deer did have faster CWD spread rates than regions with only white-tailed deer.
💠In the Canadian Prairie Provinces (Alberta/Saskatchewan), deer movements were shorter than in Colorado or Wyoming, yet CWD spread faster there.
💠Predicted CWD spread based on deer movement resulted in slower rates than the observed CWD rates showing that accounting for migration or juvenile dispersal did not fully explain the observed CWD rate estimates.
This study provides the first estimates of CWD spread rates across the U.S. and Canada. These results help to inform an important management tradeoff: deer movements can contribute to disease spread, but migration may also help support resilient and healthy wildlife populations…”

  4. A Day in the Life at Duffney’s Bird Barn

How I balance a remote career, homesteading, crochet, writing, and motherhood—one day at a time. People often ask me how I find time to do everything. Honestly... Some days I wonder the same thing. The weeds don't always get pulled. The laundry doesn't always get folded. The dishes aren't always done when I want them to be. Some crochet projects take longer than I planned, and there are days when my to-do list is still staring back at me when it's time for bed. I've learned that's […]

  11. 34 deg F this morning when I hiked before work. This is the first day it's been above freezing on my morning hikes since I started on Jan 5. It's going to be warm again tomorrow so the trails are going to start getting pretty muddy. Not looking forward to that.
However, this morning the trails were still frozen. A beautiful sunrise and I met a nice lady (pictured) along the way. #morning

  14. Deer have been killing some of these trees for years. Several in this row have been replaced 2-3 times now. Even with plastic protectors on the trunk the Deer still manage to knock them off by rubbing😑
