  1. #BackyardHorticulture #Wetlands #SkunkCabbage
We have a nice wetland-ish area towards the back of our property. Every spring, this shoots up, within just a few days. I noticed a red tailed hawk fly up from the little stream that flows through this area. I'll guess it was hunting critters, but I haven't heard the spring peepers yet.

I'm all the gloom and chaos, I have to remind myself how unbelievably lucky I am to live in New England, in a still rural area. I get to come outside and breathe the air, even if it's faint with a skunky smell, and hear and see the birds.

    Wikipedia:

Symplocarpus foetidus, commonly known as skunk cabbage or eastern skunk cabbage (also swamp cabbage, clumpfoot cabbage, or meadow cabbage, fetid pothos or polecat weed), is a low-growing plant that grows in wetlands and moist hill slopes of eastern North America. Bruised leaves present an odor reminiscent of skunk.

  3. new journal entry about looking for skunk cabbages yesterday:

    write.as/freeanduneasy/14-febr

I’m still trying to get back into the habit of writing again and don’t feel like I’m as clear headed as I’d like to be but I’m going to press on and hope it improves and gets easier (and please excuse any typos or grammatical errors, I’m treating this like a journal and trying not to fuss too much about it)

  4. the first skunk cabbages of the season; this day marks the beginning of my calendar

I want to know when and where events like this occur in my place, to mark and celebrate the first skunk cabbage emerging from the ice and the start of spring, the first leaf unfurled on the beech outside my door, etc.

I have had many false starts over the years trying to keep a record of these occasions but I keep trying and will likely continue

  10. Two of my favourite plants! 💚😍 To be honest I have so many "favourite plants" it could be said I love them all deeply. Such textures, shapes, hues and lines. Every plant is art-full and full of spirit. Vibrant. Generous. An integral part of habitats and bi(h)omes. Regenerative, and nourishing to the heart, mind, and sometimes belly. How I love thee....

  15. Did you know Eastern Skunk Cabbages have a super power more powerful than the stink. These beautiful plants are thermogenic and can 27 to 63 degrees F above the surrounding temperature to grow through the frozen ground. Caleb Smith State Park Preserve, Maryland 2024

  16. I went to the woods because I wished to find skunk cabbages. Now I'm ready to admit spring has arrived.

  17. Spring emerging in our Seattle garden (North Beach) along our little unnamed stream which flows into Puget Sound. The #skunkcabbage have lived here for probably 400 years ever since the massive earthquake that lifted this land from the sea, or so they say. I’ve lived here only 47 years. This used to be an overgrown mess filled with the neighborhood discards. You couldn’t see the stream. One lingering #horsetail millions removed. #spring #landscapedesign #pnw #seattle #gardening
