@photorat I’ve been using #AllTrails for several years and have been increasingly annoyed by their monetization efforts. Most recently the plant ID upsell would happen during hikes (a setting turns that off) and every time you open the app (complained via chat, then it stopped). I value it most for trail discovery and recent reviews.
#Comaps or #OrganicMaps are great for finding driving directions whether you have coverage or not. These are commonly used to get me to and from trails.

I’ve paid for #AllTrails every year for years, recently $36. I’ve submitted trail reviews and submitted new trails that became popular.
Several of the features that I’ve used are no longer available unless I pay more than 2x what my current subscription costs. Every time they prod me to upgrade I’m reminded that I’m unhappy with them. And I’m annoyed that I have to deal with this frequent ad in an app I pay for.
After turning off auto renew, a 30% off code came in email. Pffft. Try $36.

I already don't use their service any more because of the amount of data their app has to collect to function. This is just the last straw for me.

But in a city, you at least won't die of exposure or fall down a ravine and break your neck, because the algorithm told you that would make your hike 'more scenic' or 'shorter'.

@thenextsummit while I fully agree that a phone should not be the only navigation device you have on lightly traveled trails, the article loses credibility by suggesting that a map and compass or any GPS device is better than a phone. I download maps to my phone (typically #AllTrails and #OrganicMaps) and go into airplane mode when I disconnect the charging cable. My iPhone screen is much brighter than my old Garmin and the apps provide much better functionality. Map and compass for backup.

#AllTrails has progressively gotten worse and worse over the years for me. When #hiking out of cell range the app barely functions now, and they've gotten rid of their lifeline feature which was great way to easily share where you're going and when you're done. Just minor... Critical safety stuff... 😔

Surprise! Bet you did not know you are *indemnifying* those companies.Worst case translation: The company is sued and you must reimburse the company for the attorney fees they spend defending themselves. That is my understanding of the gist of “indemnification”.

Most of my destinations were #hiking trailheads in BLM land or National Forests in #Utah, #NewMexico, and #Colorado.The typical way to get a route to them is to open up #AllTrails and click on "Directions". That gives me options: Open Apple Maps, Open Google Maps, and Copy to Clipboard. No "Open Organic Maps". Instead, I copied to the clipboard, and pasted into the search on #OrganicMaps. This worked great. 5/
