  1. We're clearing overgrowth around the house and started looking at the limestone walls. We have a bunch of fish fossils and other critters in the walls. This is one of the easier ones to see.

  6. I have been itching to do a #poolpond update because today was a good day! Yesterday we went to Rona for some supplies including an irrigation box to hide the valves and a few cans of foam sealant to start foaming in the rocks and waterfall at the head of the poolpond.

Today was irrigation box day and it was not light work! I also managed to squish a finger between two rocks… twice.

Had to dig a hole to hold the box and get the top reasonably close to ground level. That took a bit plus three small trenches to allow the 2” hose to reach down into smoothly. (I avoided elbows and stuff because they slow/impede the flow of the water)

Also had to use some leftover cloth and pond liner to make sure the hole was within the system and would not lose water out of the system if any connections leaked.

One hose goes straight from the main pond in the pump bay pond to the bog filter.

The second hose goes into the manifold (set of red/white valves) and the flow can be split between going to the poolpond to act as water recirculation and flow from outlets in the bottom and outlets near the top of the water, or into the bog filter. (Note to self at least ONE of these valves MUST be open at all times)

Next weekend I will work on foaming in the rocks on Saturday and hopefully fill the system Sunday!

  11. Metal brackets and three 2x4s - 12 feet and cut in half and voila a nice little wood rack. Could have gone with 4' on the verticals.
Should have done this at least a couple of years ago. (just used concrete blocks with and 4 ft 2x4s stuck in the holes and the logs in between the wood)

  21. I quickly found out my hand said no to pruning shears and my arms said no to the loppers. They gave me no choice so I was forced to play with the chainsaw.

I now have a nice pile of logs and a mostly numb hand (vibrations and nerve damage don't mix).

  27. Spent a couple hours cleaning up trees and branches I cut down last fall. I made it through about half of the first pile before I couldn't hold the clippers anymore. I take it as a win.

Sometimes things just have to get done and feeling up to it doesn't come into play.

  28. Good morning. 🌸🌸🌸

    19 April 2026

It rained last night, and everything outside has turned a fresh, bright green. The temperature dropped just enough that I’ll want a sweatshirt when I step out. That’s not a complaint — I know roughly ten percent of the country is still buried under snow. Besides, I like cool weather. Cool, not cold.

With the ground still wet, I might hook up the spike aerator to the lawnmower and drag it around the yard today. Or I might not. It’s good to have options. I may just grab my camera and sit in the backyard; cool mornings make for good bird watching. They get hungry when the air has a bite to it.

I really should walk the yard and pick up fallen limbs and pinecones — or hire someone to do it. My place is about two acres, with several oaks and a couple of pines, and it’s bordered on three sides by lightly wooded areas. Debris is just part of the deal. The whole place has a kind of park‑like feel, and the nearest neighbors are at least a football field away. It’s quiet out here.

I picked up one of those EGO leaf blowers to replace my big Husqvarna backpack blower. I wanted something lighter and easier to put into quick action, and battery power seemed the way to go. I used it for the first time yesterday to clear the driveway, and it’ll do the job. The only drawback is that the battery drained in about fifteen minutes — though I did run it on turbo. I’ve got two EGO 5.0Ah batteries, but I may end up buying a third.

When you have a yard, it doesn’t just sit there. You’ve got to get out and work it — or it works you.

  33. Hello everyone! How's it going? It's meh here, a sign of the times. I had to get the lawn mower out for the first time this year. I'm glad we invested in the Ego electric mower a couple of years ago. It makes cutting the grass so much easier. No oil, no gas and no engine noise. Friday I'll be getting the wood chipper out, it has all three but will chip a 4 inch branch, so I'll cut it some slack. 😉

Have a pleasant evening! After the hardware store, I'm shutting down.

  43. Looks like I caught the robo-mower wave about 4 years too early. The technology has matured quite a bit since I bought my #husqvarna #automower in 2022. The latest models have LIDAR and virtual boundaries driven by GPS. The absolute worst part of the whole experience is installing and maintaining the stupid boundary wire. If you're thinking of pulling the trigger on one of these, avoid the models with a wire at all costs!

  46. I hate using insecticides but the bitey ants are getting ridiculous around my house, and building too close to it for comfort. Plus I've gotten 4 bites over the last two days from just doing random yard work. Nothing like having to run into the house and strip all your clothes off because OUCH. 😅 The bites themselves hurt, then the large, itchy welt left behind sucks too. Geez, I thought I was safe from biting things for a couple more weeks.
