  1. I'm considering horticultural vinegar for some stubborn weeds in my yard.

I know to mix it with soap and salt, use a paintbrush for localized applications, and to dress full hazmat.

If anyone has experience with it and has advice, I'd love to learn from you.

*I do not need or want recommendations on other weed management solutions at this time. Or advice/conjecture from people who haven't used vinegar. Don't be a weedy reply guy. Thank you.

  6. I quickly found out my hand said no to pruning shears and my arms said no to the loppers. They gave me no choice so I was forced to play with the chainsaw.

I now have a nice pile of logs and a mostly numb hand (vibrations and nerve damage don't mix).

  11. It’s #stouturday and #yardWork day and I figured why my eyes have been terrible this spring!

    The glowiness alongside my #revBrewChicago Deth’s Tar isn’t radioactive - it’s POLLeN!

  16. Spent a couple hours cleaning up trees and branches I cut down last fall. I made it through about half of the first pile before I couldn't hold the clippers anymore. I take it as a win.

Sometimes things just have to get done and feeling up to it doesn't come into play.

  17. Good morning. 🌸🌸🌸

    19 April 2026

It rained last night, and everything outside has turned a fresh, bright green. The temperature dropped just enough that I’ll want a sweatshirt when I step out. That’s not a complaint — I know roughly ten percent of the country is still buried under snow. Besides, I like cool weather. Cool, not cold.

With the ground still wet, I might hook up the spike aerator to the lawnmower and drag it around the yard today. Or I might not. It’s good to have options. I may just grab my camera and sit in the backyard; cool mornings make for good bird watching. They get hungry when the air has a bite to it.

I really should walk the yard and pick up fallen limbs and pinecones — or hire someone to do it. My place is about two acres, with several oaks and a couple of pines, and it’s bordered on three sides by lightly wooded areas. Debris is just part of the deal. The whole place has a kind of park‑like feel, and the nearest neighbors are at least a football field away. It’s quiet out here.

I picked up one of those EGO leaf blowers to replace my big Husqvarna backpack blower. I wanted something lighter and easier to put into quick action, and battery power seemed the way to go. I used it for the first time yesterday to clear the driveway, and it’ll do the job. The only drawback is that the battery drained in about fifteen minutes — though I did run it on turbo. I’ve got two EGO 5.0Ah batteries, but I may end up buying a third.

When you have a yard, it doesn’t just sit there. You’ve got to get out and work it — or it works you.

  18. Hello everyone! How's it going? It's meh here, a sign of the times. I had to get the lawn mower out for the first time this year. I'm glad we invested in the Ego electric mower a couple of years ago. It makes cutting the grass so much easier. No oil, no gas and no engine noise. Friday I'll be getting the wood chipper out, it has all three but will chip a 4 inch branch, so I'll cut it some slack. 😉

Have a pleasant evening! After the hardware store, I'm shutting down.

  19. Yay, something flew up my nose with extreme velocity while I was using the weed trimmer and gave me a nosebleed. I'll either be fine or I don't even want to count all the worst case scenarios going through my mind. 😅

  20. Looks like I caught the robo-mower wave about 4 years too early. The technology has matured quite a bit since I bought my #husqvarna #automower in 2022. The latest models have LIDAR and virtual boundaries driven by GPS. The absolute worst part of the whole experience is installing and maintaining the stupid boundary wire. If you're thinking of pulling the trigger on one of these, avoid the models with a wire at all costs!

  23. I hate using insecticides but the bitey ants are getting ridiculous around my house, and building too close to it for comfort. Plus I've gotten 4 bites over the last two days from just doing random yard work. Nothing like having to run into the house and strip all your clothes off because OUCH. 😅 The bites themselves hurt, then the large, itchy welt left behind sucks too. Geez, I thought I was safe from biting things for a couple more weeks.

  24. Did I just take down a dead dogwood tree with a jigsaw because I have no chainsaw? Yes. Mostly. 😂 I'll have to wait for the really chunky base part to decay a bit more, or possibly get over my fear of learning to use a chainsaw.

Also, first swallowtail butterfly of the year spotted!

Crow fam is not pleased with me because I was in the yard, my presence preventing them from coming in for their daily peanuts. Scaredy-crows. 🐦‍⬛

  26. CW: Complaint about minor injury

Wasp stung my ear while I was working on my Hugel bed, so on the one hand I have an extra piercing... but on the other hand I can't put my plug back in on that side until the swelling goes down again.

So, I'm either temporarily rocking 11 piercings, or I've temporarily lost one of the two stretched ears, depending on how you count it.

Never saw/heard/etc the offending bug. Was a stealthy little bastard. Ear is hurty. 🥺

  27. Break time from gardening work. Making a little progress in the side shrub/flower bed along the east side of my yard. Y'know, I don't think battery operated weed eaters/string trimmers were born to tackle grasses that're five feet tall, but after not being mobile enough to trim all summer that's what I'm asking mine to do. 😅 It'll never stop amazing me how fast things you *don't* want to grow can shoot up.

  28. I was *so close* to being done poking holes in the lawn with the weasel I borrowed from Dad... and then my new neighbour, supervising the movers unloading his truck, offered me the use of his thatching rake.

What I wanted to say was "oh gosh thank you so much but I am already tired." What I *did* was dethatch the yard, because I felt like it would be rude to do anything else. Then I put seed on it, and now it's being watered.

    I have earned this beer.

  29. the good news is yesterday i got half of our giant hedge trimmed before the battery died on the trimmer (seems to be a theme)

the bad news is, just before the battery died, my back tweaked.

I took some relaxants and it was ok last night, but this morning the muscles are very guarded. Full up on Tylenol back pain and Advil.

  30. Gardening the driveway, part three:
Today I went down to the lower level and took out weed mats with 1.5” of dirt attached. That will be good for the compost pile to have some soil in there, though forking the whole thing over makes my back ache in anticipated workload. Still, much progress — another 20 gallons of weed-and-dirt today.
