📚️ I was about to get into eReaders.
However, I had to find out:
The popular reader software #CrossPointReader uses genAI for development (Claude commits & everything). 😑
⇒ Does anybody know of another eReader software that is developed without genAI?
⇒ Or a non-slop fork of CrossPoint?
(similar to what @nerdnextdoor did for #vim with #evi, or @thomasadam did for #tmux with #openTmux)

It begins.
Also this little e-reader is my 2026 device of the year. Easy. It's SO much easier to carry and pocket than a kindle or reading on my phone when there's a million different things to distract me.
Lilbits: Ploopy’s A+ trackball has eight buttons (two are also dials), Xteink X4 discontinued, and more
A company with a funny name has made some of the most interesting computer input devices of recent years. Ploopy got its start with trackballs, at a time when bigger companies were exiting the space. Since then, the company has made trackpads, pointing sticks, and dials.
Now the company is bringing some of those gadgets together with the new Ploopy A+. It’s a trackball mouse with eight […]

Took me long enough but I've finished issue #211 of #Clarkesworld at last!!!
On my #XTEINKX4 of course
Eldest is enjoying their early 10th Birthday Present - an #xteinkX4 #eReader with case, already devoured Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, & Anne of Green Gables (all from https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/e-e-smith/first-lensman in English).
My challenge now is to find the Japanese translation #eBook of the later by Muraoka Hanako, and/or the novel “An no Yurikago Muraoka Hanako no Shogai” by Eri Muraoka about her grandmother the translator’s life - used for the NHK drama “Hanako to Anne”https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanako_to_Anne
We'll try something from https://standardebooks.org/ebooks next given the slightly hit-and-miss rendering from #ProjectGutenberg on the #xteinkX4 #eReader - again out of copyright public domain classics.
Update: Much better, same novel but all the pictures work and no weird table layout snippets 🥳
Good news, the #xteinkX4 #eReader can show some of the pictures from #ProjectGutenberg nicely…
Second #xteinkX4 #eReader challenge looks like working out which public domain e-books' formatting suits this little device best.
For example, #ProjectGutenberg's Alice In Wonderland https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/28885/pg28885-images.html starts with a bunch of images and tables which don't show at all well.
The actual text starts with an almost black square image (meant to be a calligraphic letter A) and the "LICE was beginning to get tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, ..."
Update: Added comparison.
First real challenge with the #xteinkX4 #eReader solved with this TikTok video - how to remove the SD memory card: https://www.tiktok.com/@drcrazyde/video/7609354967639510294
It is a push to pop thing, and the lid of the supplied USB-A adapter works great.
@solsetur Right then, the tiny #xteinkX4 #eReader has arrived. Do I start with trying to put the original #crosspoint alternative firmware on it https://github.com/crosspoint-reader/crosspoint-reader - or https://github.com/aBER0724/crosspoint-reader-cjk for the better Japanese support...
My X4 arrived and it is amazing! I installed CrossInk on it and used „Send to X4“ to put some of the Magic: The Gathering short stories on it that I want to catch up on.

On this show, I play a song from Brooke Eden; having the full blog publishing loop working makes me want to publish more posts; dynamic podcast ads are becoming so bad and so plentiful that I am motivated to remove them; all ad removers use LLMs; I am so angry at the LLM companies for poisoning a useful technology with their financial scams; Democrats love to sign me up to mailing lists against my will; I used fake initials to figure out which magazine sold me out to junk mailers; I love Ruby on Rails as a web development tool but I hate David Heinemeier Hansson; Marc Andreesen is the dickhead whose name I blanked on; my people have been in America for centuries and I have no problem with immigrants; it is a Sisyphean task to try to keep evil companies and people out of your life and toolchain; some cliches of TV and movies have gotten on my last nerve; did you just say the title of the show? the detective always figures things out 3 seconds before the bomb explodes; I have made my bed on the YouTube algorithm and now I must lie in it; The Hack-A-Day podcast is my new place to find projects to expand my horizons; please suggest starter electronics projects for me!

I wanted to change the firmware on my #xteinkx4 to CrossPoint via the WebUSB flasher on their site.
I ended up having to completely nuke snap and replace it with a third-party Chromium DEB because Snap and AppArmor are opaque unusable pieces of software that silently hide failures making me tear my precious hair out figuring out what's wrong.
All I wanted was to try some other fonts on the e-reader.
I’m debating myself on wether I want to get an Xteink X4 E-Reader or rather when I want to get one. The white one with a forest green magnetic folio looks really nice. I had a Kindle Paperwhite for a while but I sold it since I don’t want to be bound to Amazon.

Lilbits: Goodbye OnePlus, Hello Xteink X4 Pro and a Game Boy Advance lookalike from AYANEO
A year and a half after launch, the MeLE QuieterDL fanless mini PC is getting a modest processor spec bump… and a big price increase. More than a decade after entering the global smartphone market, OnePlus is pulling back. And at a time when most consumer electronics are seeing RAM & storage-related price hikes, Xteink has made a bit of a splash with its cheap, small, and honestly barely […]

Xteink X4 Pro could bring a front-lit touchscreen display and bigger battery to the surprisingly popular 4.3 inch eReader. No word on whether it'll still support third-party CrossPoint Reader firmware that actually makes the X4 useful though. https://www.reddit.com/r/XTEINK/comments/1uy1gvx/xteink_x4_gen_2_and_x4_pro_leak_from_aliexpress/ #Xteink #XteinkX4 #XteinkX4Pro #eReader
I've been given* an Xteink X4 by a pal who couldn't get on with it.
In the short time I've had it (maybe a couple of hours) I've got Crosspoint on it and connected it to Calibre.
It seems like a decent little eReader considering its Lilliputian dimensions.
Now, what can I use it for?
(My Boox Page is in good health still)
*There's a quid-pro-quo in that I've got to help him with a job later on.
On this show, I play a song from Elour; the kid lit all the fireworks; it's too dry for roman candles; clutter is physical procrastination; I'm trying to carry stuff immediately without piling it for later transfer; do the tedious stuff at the first opportunity rather than when disaster strikes; I killed a day in Columbia writing mobilely about how I didn't need a mobile writing tool; right after I stopped caringm the PocketMage campaign went live; I still use the Boox Note Air 4C; I still use the DIY TRMNL; I barely use the Heltec Lora V4; I might try to fix the charging ports on the stack of kid Kindle Fires because what do I have to lose?
