Little #mayke #prototype a tiny magmount "nuby" style light for the #xteinkx4 incredibly delicate atm but somehow very #solarpunk in my mind. Hat tip to @grajohnt for discussions...

✍️ I wrote a guide describing how I'm using the $69 Xteink X4 as a serious part of my reading workflow:
I love this ultra-portable notification-free reading environment that syncs with my KOReader devices!
💰 I'm sorry about your wallet!

A 15% discount and a free magnetic case was all it took for me to succumb to peer pressure 😄

Xteink blocks installation of custom firmware on some eReaders, launches a new Android-powered model
The Xteink X3 and Xteink X4 are cheap tiny eBook readers small enough to fit in your pocket or even affix to the back of your phone, allowing you to take a 3.7 or 4.3 inch E Ink screen everywhere you go and catch up on your reading at any time.
But what’s really made these little devices from Xteink go viral in recent months is the fact that while the default software that runs on them is… […]

I went to start reading Darksight Dare, the new Penric and Desdemona novella by Bujold, and discovered it reliably crashes my XTEink X4. I suspect that an entire novella as a single chapter is too much for it to parse without running out of memory. #xteink #xteinkx4 #CrossPoint

My first #mayke was to add a phone magsafe ring to the 3dprinted rugged case for my #xteinkx4 ereader.. however the reader wobbled on it so I did a quick @freecad of a thin TPU surround I badly glued on! Wobble solved. #freecadfriday

Very depressing. I bet the majority of these devices have been purchased because of the hype around Crosspoint. Always a shame when businesses don't give a shit about their customers. #XTEINKX4

So I am a bit late but I got a XTEINK x4 ereader.
It’s pretty awesome and mounts on the back of my iPhone and fits in my shirt pocket.
Haven’t had a chance to mess around with it but I want to swap the OS out and get it to sync with my books.
I have wanted a small ereader for a long time and this is perfect to replace my Kindle Paperwhite

Apparently new #XTEINKX4 and #XTEINK devices will be locked down soon, which will make installing custom firmware on them impossible (or at least way harder than the minute it takes rn)
If you are going to get this device to thinker with, get it now.
Seems like it only affects the Chinese version for now, but who knows what will happen

The #xteinkx4 drama is about to get goofier:
On Saturday I ordered one on sale from Amazon (thanks @mattgriffin!)
On Saturday I also sent email to Xteink’s shipper, cc:ed to Xteink customer support about the one I ordered directly from the company, saying that it seemed very fishy that I was being asked to formally declare I’d refused delivery when, according to the tracking info, it’s never been delivered and has been held in a nearby town for two weeks.
This morning I get two different tracking notices that both devices are set to arrive today. Which, if it happens, will be fine as my 21yo has watched this drama unfold and started looking up Xteinks to see what the fuss was about, and now wants one. 😂
I’ll believe the tracking when I see them in my hands!

Things have been pretty chaotic and stressful, so I haven't even gotten around to bragging with my Xteink X4.😅
It's great! I managed to flash Cross-point on Monday evening and have read a few chapters on it in the last two days.
The only thing I'm a bit annoyed with is that the syncing with KOReader isn't working as well as I'd hoped. Technically it works and progress is pushed and pulled... but the position between devices is waaaaaaay off. 😩
I hope somebody gets around to fixing this soon. I saw that there was already a PR for that, but the person behind that gave up eventually without getting it merged. 😢 -
I have very specific plans in mind for this. #XTEINKx4 #Clarkesworld #meme

My blog/experiences with the #xteinkx4 ereader and the #crosspoint #opensource firmware have ended up on @hackaday :) My rep as nerd sniping geekchic influencer increases! https://hackaday.com/2026/04/05/pocket-sized-e-ink-gets-a-firmware-upgrade/

Lots of #xteinkx4 talk last night and then this morning notice there was also a new release of #crosspoint reader yesterday
.. version 1.2 is out! Cc @foosel :) -
@concretedog current #crosspoint firmware supports OTA via #calibre. I successfully transferred a converted epub.
This has (re)opened a can of worms for me over digital book management. Having owned over the years a kindle and now a kobo. Calibre does a good job making ACSM books I’ve purchased available to me on my computer. It’ll be fun optimising them for the #xteinkx4
Have you used this: https://github.com/chazeon/xtctool for prettifying epubs for the Xteink?

@concretedog sketchy moment post flash where I thought it had bricked! But, no, all good.

Mucking about earlier with the #xteinkx4 #ereader with the #opensource crosspoint reader firmware. Added a custom sleep image file for a pretty cool name badge! #tinkering

My first book read (in just 2 days) on my #XteinkX4 was Chrono Trigger by Michael P. Williams
The second of the #BossFightBooks series, a memoir, critique and analysis of my favourite game of all time.
To be honest it was a bit less technical or historical than I'd like, but I enjoyed it nonetheless and the interviews with Ted Woosley and Tom Slattery were a highlight for me. A good read and kinda short too

CrossPoint Reader is an open source replacement for Xteink X4 eReader’s default firmware
The Xteink X4 is a compact eBook reader that’s smaller than most smartphones. In fact, it’s so small that the company positions it as an eReader that sticks magnetically to the back of a phone, although you can also use the $69 device as a cheap standalone, pocket-sized eReader with a 4.2 inch E Ink display.
Some folks find that the out of the box experience can be a little frustrating, but […]
