The news that the Xteink X4 is officially getting discontinued and is now end-of-life makes me really glad that I bought one recently. I suspected that this might happen and partly made the decision to buy now instead of waiting a bit more.

Eldest is enjoying their early 10th Birthday Present - an #xteinkX4 #eReader with case, already devoured Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, & Anne of Green Gables (all from https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/e-e-smith/first-lensman in English).

My challenge now is to find the Japanese translation #eBook of the later by Muraoka Hanako, and/or the novel “An no Yurikago Muraoka Hanako no Shogai” by Eri Muraoka about her grandmother the translator’s life - used for the NHK drama “Hanako to Anne”https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanako_to_Anne

We'll try something from https://standardebooks.org/ebooks next given the slightly hit-and-miss rendering from #ProjectGutenberg on the #xteinkX4 #eReader - again out of copyright public domain classics.

Update: Much better, same novel but all the pictures work and no weird table layout snippets 🥳

Good news, the #xteinkX4 #eReader can show some of the pictures from #ProjectGutenberg nicely…

Second #xteinkX4 #eReader challenge looks like working out which public domain e-books' formatting suits this little device best.

For example, #ProjectGutenberg's Alice In Wonderland https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/28885/pg28885-images.html starts with a bunch of images and tables which don't show at all well.

The actual text starts with an almost black square image (meant to be a calligraphic letter A) and the "LICE was beginning to get tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, ..."

My X4 arrived and it is amazing! I installed CrossInk on it and used „Send to X4“ to put some of the Magic: The Gathering short stories on it that I want to catch up on.

#xteinkx4 in hand I have, following the tradition of my people, put the #lensmen cycle on it.

I wanted to change the firmware on my #xteinkx4 to CrossPoint via the WebUSB flasher on their site.

I ended up having to completely nuke snap and replace it with a third-party Chromium DEB because Snap and AppArmor are opaque unusable pieces of software that silently hide failures making me tear my precious hair out figuring out what's wrong.

All I wanted was to try some other fonts on the e-reader.

I’m debating myself on wether I want to get an Xteink X4 E-Reader or rather when I want to get one. The white one with a forest green magnetic folio looks really nice. I had a Kindle Paperwhite for a while but I sold it since I don’t want to be bound to Amazon.

I've been given* an Xteink X4 by a pal who couldn't get on with it.

In the short time I've had it (maybe a couple of hours) I've got Crosspoint on it and connected it to Calibre.

It seems like a decent little eReader considering its Lilliputian dimensions.

Now, what can I use it for?
