Another week of "I can't remember my log-in details for my old #wordpresscom account" as soup du jour in the forums.
Please folks, is it too much to ask you to keep in a safe place your #wordpressdotcom username, password and the email address you used to create your account? Changed email address? Then update your account profile!
Remember what Ben Franklin said? "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
That's about 28.34952 grams of prevention for us metric folk.

My Background Pattern is Going Away! Now what? Are you one of the several thousand #WordPressdotcom site owners who received a notification saying you'll need to refresh your site's background before June 15, 2026? If so, let's talk!

Looks like all my #WordPressdotcom sites on shared hosting are running WP 6.9
Beta Testers FTW! 💪

#WordPress #wordpressdotcom #uiux

@dothewoo.io is now on the #fediverse
This may be the reference implementation of #podcasts in #WordPress blogs and i hope that more podcasts will follow this example.
@BobWP @derekahanson It was fun working with you on that ❤️
And kudos to the @Mastodon team, the audio player is pretty neat!!!

If you have a site on #wordpressdotcom then your site is being crawled by AI companies.
You see that such AI scraping is not banned here: https://wordpress.com/robots.txt
#automattic isn't just selling you plans, they are selling your content - and they are not telling you.
-
If you click Agree in the #cookiebanner on any site hosted at #wordpressdotcom your data is then given to 851 companies.
Eight Hundred and Fifty One.
One of those companies has been taken over, and the link to a 'Privacy Policy' does not lead to that, but they also retain YOUR #data for 4320 days. That is almost 12 YEARS.
So of course Automattic value your #privacy, and it makes a complete nonsense of #gdpr as you have no practical way to delete that data.
-
Simply imagine the difference between creating a poem or photo that someone else sells (without telling you or paying you for it) to be used for unknown purposes... vs being shown ads based on your poem.
I, as a content *creator* find it different, enough to not renew my paid #Wordpressdotcom hosting. For all I know, WP et al are assembling a "person" to argue with me online about how "this is all fine" in the style of me. I'll be amazed if a class action suit doesn't occur
-
WordPress.org is mostly what powers 40%+ of the web not WordPress.com, which is Automattic's hosted version.
Please be careful with this as we don't need panic.

More reasons to self-host and publish in your own space

Just finished moving my main site from WordPress.com to Hostinger. A bug in a recent version of the WordPress.com interface broke my ability to use their (paid) DNS service, and it turned out that I’d have to buy more services to contact support.
But for now, I’m keeping this microblog on WordPress.com for the good ActivityPub integration. Hostinger doesn’t support the plugin yet, and in any case it’s nice having someone else manage all the security stuff that comes with federated applications.
If you want to subscribe to this microblog from Mastodon or another application on the ‘verse, add @zeke.wordpress.com@zeke.wordpress.com .

@Helene I'll answer this one here. ^_^
> That illustrate my main feeling on Mastodon : so many instances, I'm missing so much from all those places I will never see. And I don't have time to duplicate myself like you do, it's already too much with T2-Bluesky-Mastodon 😬
It's a good question.
At first, it appears that one is missing a lot because there are different instances or servers. However, if we consider it from the #Facebook + #Twitter + #Instagram + #Tumblr + #Goodreads + #Twitch + #YouTube + #Blogspot era/setup, it is actually the same thing.
1. Even on these non-federated platforms, for example Twitter / #X, you actually miss a lot too. Or from Facebook, you actually see only those that Facebook's algorithms want you to see (you don't even see everything from your 1st Level connections [i.e. those you added as friends and those you chose to follow are also filtered by their algorithm]).
2. If you want to follow someone using Instagram but doesn't have a presence on Twitter, you will be forced to create an Instagram account.
Or, they have a Twitter account, but they are not updating it because they chose to make Instagram their main #SNS presence.
---
This is where the #Fediverse has an advantage: you don't have to create a #Pixelfed account to follow someone who prefers to share images and photos.
Or if you want to follow a #WordPress blog, you don't have to create a #WordPressDotCom account, if they added the #ActivityPub / Fediverse add-on, you can follow them from your own fediverse account.
In the old way, you have to create an account for each platform. However, in the Fediverse way, you don't have to.
---
I have a Pixelfed and #BookWyrm account, to mention a few, for my images and #bookshelves needs. If you like to follow images I upload and/or books I've read, you can follow me at @[email protected] and @[email protected] using your existing @Helene fediverse account.
You don't have to create accounts there, like how you would for Instagram and Goodreads.
People like me, who have multiple accounts in the fediverse network, are advance users and who have specific needs and reasons.
It is like having multiple emails: I have a separate email per service/platform. I have a separate email per games.

Tags, or Categories, on #wordpressdotcom can - and are - flagged so they do not show when queried.
I know because I was there when it was implemented.
The fact that Gaza or Hamas is now flagged is the result of the Automattic CEO.
He wants to hide news.
He wants to pretend that the universe is all rainbows and unicorns.
This is censorship.
This is wrong. -
In a weird twist, my older posts are now appearing in the Fediverse version of the DramaTea blog and my new post is not appearing 😂
What can I say the #wordpressdotcom and #ActivityPub integration with the #Fediverse is still a little rough around the edges. Comments are also not reliably appearing.
Looks like I am not moving away from brid.gy anytime soon.#Indieweb #Blogging #blog #wordpress

After moving my blog to #WordPressDotCom I just redid the entire theme from scratch using the Site Editor, and I think it really shows how far #Gutenberg has come in recent years. The theme looks great.
I did have to resort to custom CSS (added via the Site Editor) for the drop shadows and the background pattern. But everything else is done in the Site Editor!
Honestly really impressed with how far this whole journey for #WordPress has come.
Check it out at https://thorlaksson.com!

Neat, you can now follow my blog, that I recently moved to #WordPressDotCom, on the fediverse! @thorlaksson.com
It hasn't seen any new posts in a *very* long time, but I do always want to write more.

Starting today, every site on WordPress.com can publish directly to the fediverse, powered by ActivityPub for WordPress.

The fediverse has arrived at WordPress.com ❤️

thanks @mattwiebe and #wordpressdotcom and #Automattic and all other contributors!!!
This is amazing!!!

If there are any people from #WordPress .com on here: please do not ever
ever ever ever
EVER
place a giant fuck you upsell block at the top of our paid admin dashboard with 30 ads trying to sell everything from domains to educational classes and traffic boosting and logo design classes, each requiring two clicks to dismiss
ever fucking again.
This has to be some of the most user-hostile, obnoxious upselling behavior from a paid service company that I have ever seen.

@Mastodon Great to see this feature being promoted. Mastodon link verification is a simple, elegant, and web-native solution to a complex problem
I wonder if the guide could be enhanced with step-by-step help for people using popular personal website hosting such as #WordpressDotCom?
I figured out how to verify with a custom menu link but it took me a while
-
Now with native #Mastodon sharing button on my #WordpressDotCom blog. Thank you, #Automattic

I read Gita's article about the decline of social networks on #TheVerge. I feel like the article is written from the perspective of someone who hasn't followed #Tumblr for several years.
Tumblr wasn't managed in its users' interests under Verizon. That has changed under #Automattic, and the team is working really hard to return Tumblr to its previous state of wonder, weird, and creativity.
Don't be too quick to count Tumblr out just yet.
Disclosure: I work for #Automattic on the #WordPressDotCom side of the business, and I am cheering the Tumblr team on.

Just a quick share here for our #WordPress community. Our team has done a really nice job with this site:

"A weaker advertising market, privacy restrictions imposed by Apple that make it harder to track users and their preferences, and the perpetual threat of regulation have made it harder for social media apps to sell ads.
"Which is why we’re seeing the beginnings of what might be a new era of social media: pay-to-play"
This is an interesting article about an interesting trend. While I'm happy to be on a social network that I own my little piece of, I can see variations of this trend in a number of existing services like #LinkedIn, aspects of #WordPressDotCom plans, and other similar services.
In some ways, it's a little like #Meta and #Twitter are catching up. 🤔

“To help some of the newcomers make connections: name 5-7 things that interest you but aren't in your profile, as tags so they are searchable. Then boost this post or repeat its instructions so others know to do the same.”
