Made the shift #Android. It's actually been easier than I thought - though messaging is still a mess unless you use a third party app already.
Continued props to #Beeper for truly making chat cross platform.
After making the appropriate changes for privacy I actually feel like I may have more control.

Gosh I'd pay like $10k for a #Beeper hoster in Canada. The apps are so great, if people's experience with Matrix were always like this I think they would love it

So I've lately been thinking about Discord and the definition of what it means to replace it.
And so I'm reminded of a good few things I've always hated and noticed about the platform anyway, at least across the circles I am and used to be on:
- The vast majority of Discord servers has the same kinds of generic channels for chatting, music, videos, art, etc. that are not tied to the stuff these servers are about. Not even for the sake of looking to impress the streamer in question, if that "stuff" is a streamer.
- The forum channels have probably been poorly marketed, because they're not so much old forums as they are mini-Reddits. And people barely use them anyway. And not even for organizing art! They'd rather have a text channel for art and tell people to just not talk that much so art can simply flow.
- Here's a fun one: People don't even like threads on Discord. Possibly because they look ugly. They just don't click with people, even with the benefit of keeping things tidy!
Simply put, people just want to chat, whether on text or voice, and sometimes with video.
And so I have to wonder if we really need a Discord replacement, more than we simply need a breakdown of everything.
At least in my case, my habits always lied in hiding those generic channels from servers because I'd rather post stuff for them here on Mastodon. On the other hand, I use Matrix through a Beeper account on NeoChat (and only open Beeper when I need to link accounts from other chat platforms that I regularly use, like Signal). Thanks to the power of the fediverse, I don't need to sign up on Lemmy (but I could if I want to!).
I think something akin to this decoupled mix is what people probably would want at the end of the day. That's why I still hold hope on stuff like Stoat!

Comunque esiste una soluzione se vuoi usare tutte le chat in unica app, si chiama #Beeper (usa un server Matrix con un bridge per WhatsApp, Telegram e così via).

Might sound exaggerated...but I explicitly bother with software and machines because I want them to make my life easier, more convenient, better...
This should be handled with EU-legislation afaic. If an institution requires vital communication it should be mandated that they provide a safe and secure means of communication that does not send any data to private companies outside the EU. We've had the technology since before Silicon Valley enslaved us with convenience.
I recently bit the bullet to see where Mr.Mullenwegs new purchase, #Beeper, is.
For anyone not in the know: Beeper intends to be an app that will allow you to connect other accounts to it and then only use that one single app for all your communications.
I found this fantastic and connected Signal (for the few I have on there), WhatsApp (because I live in Portugal and I'm thus forced to use it), LinkedIn (arguably essential in 2026, sadly)...Discord (because some people never learn) etc... that way I'd only have three messaging apps on my smartphone in 2025: Texting, Beeper and Element/Matrix for the server I'm running for friends.
Well... My main thing would be to cram WhatsApp in there...and ehr... It works?
But there's no granular notification control once you've put it there...so if my partner has an emergency, that has the same priority as all the weird borättsförening/walking groups etc ...
So once again I gave up. But I intend to start fighting back in about two weeks as in:
What can I actually do to depend less on technologies I'd rather not use.
Could I make WhatsApp calls funnel to hardware that funnels to a landline phone, for example. I don't want to live out my life as a slave to notifications that are so horrifically redundant and needlessly stress-inducing. -

Ich bin immer noch am Überlegen, ob Beeper als Gesamtpaket oder Matrix mit seinen einzelnen Bridges für eine Managed-Hosting-Lösung der richtige Weg ist, um eine relativ selbstbestimmte digitale Souveränität in Sachen Messenger zu erreichen? 🤔😅
Andererseits habe ich mich daran gewöhnt, die Ruhe und Stille zu genießen, welche sich einstellte, nachdem ich alle Mainstream-Messenger -Apps von meinem Telefon gelöscht hatte. 😁

I'm still wrapping my head around about the decision if Beeper as a whole Package or Matrix with it's single bridges as managed hosting solution is the way for me to go, into a relatively self controlled digital sovereignty in terms of messenger? 🤔😅
On the other hand, I really got used to enjoy the quiet and silence that occurred after deleting every mainstream messenger app from my phone. 😁

I had a fantastic experiance last week using #claude (#claude_code specifically) to generate a script that helps me install #appimages on my #Fedora desktop. Appimages are these weird files that don't seem to play nicely with the package managers we know and love. They require manually moving to a directory and then creating a .desktop file so that your launcher (#rofi in my case) can find it.

Seems to work with #Beeper!

In a message to Eric Migicovsky (CEO of Beeper, a 3rd party iMessage service), a 16 year old developer claimed that he reverse engineered Apple iMessage.
Astounded by the claim, the Beeper team looked into the claim & his prototype to find that it actually worked. They were able to register the Android device as if it's an iPhone and was able to send/receive messages as if nothing is amiss.
After months of work, Beeper is now releasing the Beeper Mini app which allows an Android device directly send/receive iMessage with Apple's servers without the use of relay servers. At launch, the app will cost US$2/month.
While something like this is a novelty outside of the US. For a market like the US while iMessage dominates, this can be a game changer (assuming it doesn't get legally shut down by Apple).

NGL As an early adopter I've gone through the full hype cycle with #Beeper messaging on #Android (*ahem iMessage*) but ever since it was acquired by @photomatt it's been firing on all cylinders and has become my default #chat app on desktop and mobile. It's like a modern day #Trillian or #Adium for #RCS, #SMS, #Whatsapp, #Signal, #Messenger, and more. Keep up the great work!

Google Should Push RCS Texting Further Than Just the iPhone
"Beeper supports RCS in its third-party texting app, which relaunched on Android following its attempts to integrate with Apple's iMessage. But Beeper had to reverse-engineer its way into integrating with Google Messages in order to make that happen. For now, it appears that Google isn't going after Beeper in the same way that Apple did when shutting off its iMessage integration."

Few decades ago kids like myself watched movies with businessmen and hospital doctors running around with pagers such as this and dreamt having similar tech in our pickets. It appears that the app has been growing steadily and now integrates numerous different chat services apart from just the commonly used big ones. They have even been rolling out some features that have not gone live on the parent services. There is also now forwarding between services as well as scheduling of messages, voice notes and more.
It runs cross-platform on desktop, Android, iPhone, Android Auto, Chrome OS, and even notifies via a Pebble watch. Chat services connected appear to be Whatsapp, Telegram, Slack, Twitter (X), Instagram, Discord, LinkedIn, IRC (yes really!), Matrix, Facebook Messenger, iMessage, Android SMS, Signal, and Google Chat.
All Beeper chat messages are end-to-end encrypted. Messages sent using Beeper to other chat networks are re-encrypted if the other network supports encryption (like Signal, WhatsApp and iMessage). So yes, you won't be having true E2EE all the way on those services, but a lot depends on what you're actually saying I suppose. There is however full E2EE between any other Beeper users and to Matrix users. They do state though they have zero-access to the contents of messages, so if you lose access to all your devices and your Recovery Code, they will not be able to recover your chat history (the way it should be). Their servers are located in Europe.
They built Beeper on the open source chat protocol Matrix, using its bridges functionality. Unlike other chat networks, there is no lock-in. You’re free to use open source Matrix clients to connect to Beeper, or download your data and move to a different Matrix server and continue chatting with your friends on Beeper.
For those who prefer not to use their default web service that they offer, it is possible to self-host the majority of the Beeper backend yourself. They open sourced all their bridges.
This is what they explain about how they transitioned to going free: "Later this year, we will launch an optional paid subscription, called Beeper Plus, which includes additional features like larger chat history backup, access to multiple network connections, and more. By making Beeper free, more people will feel comfortable sharing it with their friends, enabling more people to start using Beeper. Through the optional paid subscription, we will earn enough money to run the app. Currently, everyone who signs up for Beeper will enjoy a free trial of some features that will be part of Beeper Plus."
I'm thinking that I will now give this a try. I'd like to see how it works, or not, with iMessages (as I no longer have an iPhone) and with Whatsapp/Facebook (as I have no accounts with these services, so maybe this won't work).

My #WhatsApp account got blocked without any reason. Probably because of using #Beeper (#Matrix)? Specially their on-device connection for WhatsApp.
I would be happy if I could say I don't mind it. Just that I now can't easily contact a few family members, connect with a few communities that solely exit on WhatsApp, and get important updates from companies and services who only contact via WhatsApp.
