Maybe the “Webmaster” Isn’t Dead After All - Jens Oliver Meiert

Jens has an interesting thought, and despite me being still very sceptical abput the "AI"fication of everything (and shaking fists at clouds), this kind of resonates:

(…) as the web matured, development splintered into more and more specialized roles—frontend, backend, full-stack, DevOps, UX. By the 2010s, the all-encompassing “webmaster” felt dead, and you and I probably haven’t seen the title used since.
But is it really dead?
I believe that with the advent of AI, we are about to experience a renaissance.
(…) AI enables and leverages, but the webmaster orchestrates and takes the responsibility.
(…) Call it speculation, call it Web romanticism—the power of an AI-augmented generalist who owns their work is valuable, and will be hard to ignore. If one person can successfully wield that much capability, maybe the webmaster isn’t dead after all—maybe they’re leveling up, and the real time for the webmaster is yet to come.

Turns out that AI bot protection isn't even a big problem anymore — residential proxies are, and the really aggressive scraping is hard to detect and block. A bit disappointing then that @cloudflare doesn't seem to have much in store to help against those. An increasing number seems to get past the Managed Challenge easily too, it seems.

And kind of ironic that, with most "normal" ISPs all renting out IP blocks to web scraping companies (residential proxies), VPNs and private relays/anonymizers have become more trustworthy traffic sources for website owners. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Either way, "AI" and scraping are the death of the open internet and free flow of information because it's clogging all the pipes.

Updated the blog and linkdump of my website.

The linkdump went without a hitch, but the blog was a little troublesome.

Lesson: Always use a dedicated FTP client, and dont use the ftp client of your filemanager

Also: the new flatpress update can now also run a mastodon plugin!
