  1. Wonderful BSD news

    Netbase shall bring netBSD userland utilities to Linux

    Version v0.1 is released by introducing a new endeavor to port netBSD userland utilities to Linux with minimal source changes

    Quote

    The first release already includes a substantial set of core utilities including

    cat echo ln mv pwd rm rmdir sleep chmod sync date mkdir test chown basename env dirname id tee yes head printf wc false true whoami uniq nice tty grep domainname hostname

    The powerful ksh is also in the release

    The potential benefits are practical

    Developers working across BSD and Linux may prefer consistent tool behavior in both environments Security researchers and systems engineers may want to test or standardize on BSD utilities without switching operating systems.

    It may also appeal to users who prefer BSD-style implementations over GNU ones for philosophical or technical reasons.

  2. I've found #Ubuntu to be more suitable for me than #Debian on #UserLand

    Make it more of a full system with:

    sudo unminimize

    And:

    sudo apt install man-db

    to get the man pages

    #Linux #Android

  3. Just to make it clear:

    1. #Mir was "not invented here" syndrome
    2. so was #Unity
    3. and #snaps is #VendorLockIn

    Now, with their new dual licensed #Rust based #userland stack, methinks I won't be trying it out.

    I want #Free #Libre #OpenSource #Software, and I want it as a matter of #security, #autonomy and #privacy.

    I won't be lead down a garden path, straight into a #WalledGarden. We're supposed to get out of those, not back in.

  4. Maybe some day in the future #chocolatey will respect #userland installations. For #security reasons, none of my clients allow installation of any program with administrative privilege.

  5. Pues ya estaría instalado Ubuntu 22.04, con XFCE, en mi móvil Android.

    #linux #xfce #ubuntu #userland #android

  6. Schade das #UserLand für #Android wohl nicht mehr weiter entwickelt wird, scheint zumindest recht still drum herum und hat einige Bugs wie es scheint. #Debian auf einem Android Tablet auszuführen ist schon nett.
  7. @Danathar @[email protected] True! You can be #POSIX compliant and still frustrate any sane *nix user's expectations about how systems work, or do things in non-portable ways. Heck, I use the #fish_shell which doesn't even *try* to be POSIX compliant, but I love working with it anyway and the docs are solid.

    I think the real issue is that so much of #Darwin #userland is poorly documented, if at all. That just makes deviations from the norm more painful than necessary IMHO.

  8. #Userland
    Anyone know anything about it? Have any input? Experiences?

  9. Has anyone run #Phosh or #PlasmaMobile in #UserLAnd yet and is it even possible? So far I only used CLI distros with it but my #Pinephone is gone for a while now (the cops took it) and it would be kind of cool to get #LinuxPhone desktops to work on the #Android tablet I borrowed!

  10. @landley @DavittoKun *nodds in agreement*

    I don't expect anyone maintaining, designing or building #CriticalInfrastructure to ever reach out to me or even use OS/1337, but if those developing i.e. medical IT take a look at this and decide to use a clean and minimalist #Linux, #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD or even #illumos - based distro with #toybox or another compact #Userland instead of some botched "embedded" Version of Windows, then already that's the kind of change I want to see...

    I mean it would be cool if they used and contributed to #OS1337 but if I wanted to force them then I should've made some commercial distro akin to #WindRiverLinux or #VxWorks instead, and I don't...

  13. This is slowly driving me insane.
    The promise of having a computer in your pocket is so close.
    Modern #Smartphone has enough processing power to do most if not all basic tasks that people use computers for.
    But #software for this is severely lacking. Especially on #OpenSource side, when you #DeGoogle your phone.
    * bad external monitor support in #AOSP / #LineageOS
    * #UserLAnd development halted
    * #limboemu development halted

    It was going so well, but now suddenly no interest
    What am I missing?

  14. @joelle It’s a several-times-over reheated take that unfortunately seems fresh every year. I’ve heard @davew call “no breakage” his Rule 1 for decades, going back to the #UserLand #Frontier days.

  15. But what I do agree with is that exists so why should one reimpement yet another and/or when the bare minimum can be as little as <200kB is beyond me.

  21. I'm glad that it's the #Linux kernel and GNU userland rather than a #GNU kernel and Linux #userland, as it's easier to replace the userland than it is to replace the whole kernel.

  22. I don't think I can go a full year without seeing at least a glimpse of the X11 "herring bone" background. It was last spotted when I tried UserLAnd on Android. I can't remember what distro I tried, but it installed, booted, and then promptly crashed when I tried to run something. I didn't see a reason to further frustrate myself, but it was nice to see an old friend.

  23. I finally figured out what to do with all my old #Android phones - build a bot army :) So far, I have installed #UserLand / #Ubuntu on them, set up paswordless SSH to port 2022 and tested #Ansible playbooks. More to come...

  25. Above is, I believe, the first fediverse post about #userland by @hisham_hm .

    To help me and others find it again in the future, UserLand is almost, but not entirely, different from #termkit . It's also somewhat vaguely related to #fbp #flowbasedprogramming in a #shell -like context (Hisham does refer to it as an integrated #dataflow environment). It's also not entirely unrelated to #spreadsheet ways of programming.

    The original birdsite conversation is also available at nitter.net/pchapuis/status/118… and the repo for the project is at github.com/hishamhm/userland . The project uses #love2d/#löve in #lua .
  26. Since developing #rustlang #software #applications on #MSWindows requires the installation of 6GBs worth of #MSVisualStudio bloatware, I chose instead to develop it on #Debian.

    #Debian can be installed almost fully functionally on #Windows10 using its #LinuxSubsystem.

    And Debian can be installed on an #Android phone or tablet using the #UserLAnd, freely available via #FDroid.

    So now I can program using #rust on both my phone and my desktop. With #vim.

    @kelbot @StuC @priryo @architect

    No #gapps here with #fdroid and #yalp, but still do not trust. Also use #t-ui launcher. Does Google still get data from apps like #termux #connectbot, or #userland? ⁉️
