I've tested a bunch of social media platforms so you don't have to. Here is my quick summary:

1. #Bluesky is okay but quickly turned into a popularity contest.

2. #Threads = 0 engagement.

3. #Twitter #X sucks more than ever.

4. #Tribel is like #Bluesky in that early adopters dominate the entire discourse.

5. #Mastodon has the highest engagement, the fewest instances of trolling, and people tend to be nice.

Obviously, this is MY experience & doesn't mean it will be YOUR experience.

I feel like my time on #bluesky has been like being on any social media app that isn't #Mastodon. #Twitter, #Tribel, #Facebook, #Threads, #Instagram, etc all are mostly just the popular kids getting noticed & the rest screaming into the wind trying to say something controversial to get noticed.

I've tried pretty much every social media app including #Threads by #Meta (pretty sure there was already a Threads app but Meta doesn't give a fuck), and #Mastodon is still the best experience. The only issue for me is that the interactions I was having last year on Mastodon died off within months & now I might as well be dribbling words on #Tribel for the lack of engagements.

A few thoughts for new arrivals & anyone else really, plus the always fragrant topic of enshittification...

Firstly welcome to new folk!! We're happy you're here.

2) You made a good choice moving out of the corporate media silos. I want to explain why I think so, as I believe it'll shortcut you possibly years of lost time.

3) If you do choose another corporate silo, you will end up back here, trying to avoid the same problems but just escaping from the new corporate silo where you lost all time investment in 5+ yrs time.

Enshittification of corporate social silos is baked in. Twitter was on the decline path long before Musk. Disinfo, aggression farming, algorithms, ads. Many corp social silos have died or gone comatose already. Google+ Digg Myspace. All corp silos decline as they age. It's the same cycle happening to all the corporate silos, and yes that includes all the new shiny 'we're different this time, please come in to our enclosure' ones.

If it has shareholders, value to users will decline slowly then eventually steeply. 100%📉

Enshittification:
1] Offer free service to attract users.
2] Degrade user experience in favour of advertisers.
3] Degrade ad experience to capture value for shareholders.
4] Farm captive free work userbase. Farm captive sellers advertisers & businesses. They're being exploited, but don't want to lose their time investment & their social graph by switching platform. Extract bulk of value for shareholders.

This is the enshittification cycle. Every platform with shareholders slowly cannibalises it's user experience, it's advertiser experience & business user experience.

Musk is just a more visible data point on the enshittification curve.
Twitter is a 1 node silo, with enshittification profit pressures. This renders it entirely vulnerable to 1 or a handful of individuals whose concerns are profits, not users, let alone society.

#Digg 1 node silo. Shareholders.
#PInterest 1 node silo. Shareholders.
#Post 1 node silo. Shareholders.
#Google+ 1 node silo. Shareholders.

#Bluesky acts like a 1 node silo, is built/funded by people who made their money from 1 node silo enshittification bait'n'switch. If it really wanted to be different it's priority would be connecting existing user owned & operated FOSS networks. It isn't. So treat with extreme caution. Also Jack Dorsey & his behaviour with Musk etc.

There is a Solution. You're looking at it. Fediverse or something with the crucial properties of Fediverse. Multi-platform, multi-node, migration enabled, user owned & operated, Free Open Source Software (FOSS).

Where users can migrate freely tween platforms & nodes, can run own nodes & can even create new forks of the software.

Fediverse has grown to 23,000 nodes. It connects millions of users. Using 30-40 social platforms already.
No ads.
No algorithmns.
No microtargeting.
No promoted post ranking.
No centralised conversation shaping.
No VCs.
No CEOs.
No shareholders.
No corporate profit drive.
Best moderation I've seen in 40yrs online.

@therobburgessshow I keep it at Mastodon because Mastodon is good for why I joined Twitter in the first place: following the tech crowds.

#CounterSocial: seems a lot emptier than Mastodon and their Desktop UI look like several mobile feeds side by side. It's hard to look at.

#Tribel: I don't hear enough about them.

#Spoutible: I like the guy behind it Chris Bouzy. When I went on, it was empty but, I have heard before there is too much gatekeeping and it is like a hivemind in the same vein as Truth Social.

#PostNews: I don't hear a lot about that one but, I heard it had become primarily a news aggregator ran by bots. I just heard that and never tried to get on it.

#Blackplanet: It definitely isn't what it used to be and, there is limited engagement on posts.

All in all, I appreciate how many social media sites were built in response to Elon's takeover of #birdsite but, there can only be but so many to have engagement.

For All The Other Folks Here Who Also Use #Tribel - Beware of Facebook Trackers On The Service

I logged into Tribel earlier and noticed that blockers saw stuff to block and I was surprised to see that some of them were #Facebook trackers.

The google ones I could excuse since they use google ReCaptcha on their site but still... this site is promoting itself as better than Facebook and yet they are selling their users down the river?

We are currently solving the polylemma (dilemma, but with multiple options) where #Mastodon, #Post, #HiveSocial, #BlueskySocial, #CounterSocial, #Tribel, and other microblogging platforms are competing for departing Twitter users looking for a suitable alternative.

(2) Unfortunately, the #Mastodon instance I'm on does not have that specific emoji for the #birdsite verified checkmark and ended up deciding to go with the green checkmark instead for now. I have also noticed a couple accounts on here showing they were verified by fedified.com along with a few links on them. Even though I have figured out the links and added links to my #birdsite and #tribel accounts, I went into Fedified and logged in there.
