Post.news closes down tomorrow. What can we learn from it?
Monetizing posts, with profits going to the author, is difficult but possible without relying on crypto. Kudos for the attempt!
Focusing on one aspect - news - diminishes your user base to a specific interest group.
And, being a closed instance without an API or federation to other platforms made survival difficult.

#postnews is again telling me they are shutting down. I want to be nice but they could have built sustainable services within the #ActivityPub ecosystem. It would have helped everyone thrive. They knew that. They weren't as ignorant of the options as most of their users. They could have helped improve any problems or deficiencies they identified in what was already available. instead they wanted to be the hero and get rich. I guess I'm sorry they fell for the Hollywood version of capitalism.

@starrwulfe @evan Yep. #PostNews had potential, & I believe that if they would have allowed custom domains for a fee & activated #ActivityPub, they would have been as successful as #MicroBlog.
Throw in #Tumblr importing & it would have thrived.

Cosa ci insegna questa cosa: che la diversificazione va benissimo ma occorre anche avere la forza e la capacità di aggregarsi sui progetti che hanno più chance di fare la differenza, evitando di estinguersi prematuramente. 😁 😉

The Andreessen Horowitz-backed platform launched in a closed beta in November 2022, but now it’s set to shutter “within the next few weeks.”

I can't remember who exactly pointed it out, it might've been @taylorlorenz, but there was a part in Post News' mission statement that was very concerned about people being mean to billionaires.
Post News ended up the type of platform you'd expect given that ethos.
It became a centrist hellscape, home to all the self-important Trump-era neo-liberal personalities born from pre-Elon Twitter.
Shout out to the hardworking devs, but I will not miss #PostNews.

I’m totally in agreement that people need to get paid for their work, donate to Wikipedia, pay news providers within reason, but I’m not going to harassed and harangued on a daily basis. Nay, hourly basis!
I gave up pretty quickly on #PostNews
