Another day, another social platform embracing the #Atmosphere (it is currently in Beta).
It is called Gander Social, & it is hosted in #Canada 🇨🇦: https://gandersocial.ca/
Unlike #WSocial, Gander Social will use the standard Atmosphere protocol, which means they will be able to easily interact with #Bluesky users. They plan on launching sometime this year.
I am curious as to why they chose Atmosphere over the #Fediverse.

I think a lot of my frustration with some of the “consent based” social networking pushers is the lack of consistency. Those same people don’t want to utilise software that will grant them the experiences they desire, instead they want to argue and fight in an attempt to force others. Why not use #Hubzilla #GoToSocial #CounterSocial and others that have more control? Or join spaces that have allow list federation? #Fedi #Fediverse #Mastodon

@mastodonmigration I left #Twitter and had the opportunity to join the alternatives #threads, #bluesky, #countersocial , etc. I landed here for a reason and am satisfied. Not interested in hearing from the #zukerberg crowd. I’ll be blocking #threads.

1/6 A year ago, a first big wave of migration from #Twitter happened and I found myself trying #Mastodon and #CounterSocial. Mastodon felt better somehow and it's very nice, has great community, you can work up some conversation if you persist and post and leave comments - but that's how ALL #socialmedia works. @pixelfed @Shadowstreik I'd hope we all at least give it all a fair chance - There's little point in federation if we start excluding people based on assumptions (however strong they may be!) - Especially if the ability to harm the network is pretty low.
Otherwise, we turn into the questionable politics of #CounterSocial

Lately, I've spent a good chunk of time thinking about how critical Twitter has been to InfoSec, OSINT, politics, geopolitics, human rights, and more. Since taking over Twitter, Elon Musk has burdened the company with massive amounts of debt, driven away advertising revenue by letting trolls run rampant, lost trust by obliterating the original verification system, and has now replaced an iconic brand with a meaningless X. The only ads I see there now are for crappy mobile apps. I fear its days are numbered — sacrificed for an arrogant billionaire's insatiable need for attention.
A ton of Twitter alternatives have sprung up, but the communities are fragmented, and so far, none of them have started to build Twitter-like levels of influence. Mastodon is great, but with servers being run by volunteers, there is a risk of the owners deciding to close down their server for whatever reason.
I'm currently reading We are Bellingcat. @Bellingcat sources material from a verity of social media platforms, but the book makes it clear how Twitter has played an outsized role in the dissemination and collection of real-time information. It's so frustrating to watch it burn and not be able to do anything about it.

@dansup @pixelfed This is actually a huge issue across all social networks. I remember @th3j35t3r detected fake accounts created on #CounterSocial (https://counter.social) from hostile nations & spam farms last year according to memory.
Counter Social suspended the hostile/spam bots (using an algorithm I think) & had all of the accounts manually reviewed to make sure legit accounts were not deleted.
It’s a long & tedious process.

The same holds true for #CounterSocial (https://counter.social) who was active in the #Fediverse years ago but left over differences with many instance admins. They would be a top 10 instance if they federated.

Believe it or not, the very first Mastodon account I created was on #CounterSocial (https://counter.social) back when it was still in the #Fediverse. I still maintain my premium account over there (@[email protected]) although you have to have an account on the site to follow it.
It took me years to return back to the Fediverse, & now I operate several Fediverse sites!

@therobburgessshow I keep it at Mastodon because Mastodon is good for why I joined Twitter in the first place: following the tech crowds.
#CounterSocial: seems a lot emptier than Mastodon and their Desktop UI look like several mobile feeds side by side. It's hard to look at.
#Tribel: I don't hear enough about them.
#Spoutible: I like the guy behind it Chris Bouzy. When I went on, it was empty but, I have heard before there is too much gatekeeping and it is like a hivemind in the same vein as Truth Social.
#PostNews: I don't hear a lot about that one but, I heard it had become primarily a news aggregator ran by bots. I just heard that and never tried to get on it.
#Blackplanet: It definitely isn't what it used to be and, there is limited engagement on posts.
All in all, I appreciate how many social media sites were built in response to Elon's takeover of #birdsite but, there can only be but so many to have engagement.

@nick @tchambers I kept #CounterSocial in the list as they were apart of the #Fediverse before being added to #Fediblock lists by numerous instances. I suspect something similar happened to #Brighteon as well.
#TruthSocial ignored the Fediverse from the beginning.
I would not be surprised if these sites rejoined the Fediverse in the near future (by reactivating #ActivityPub) now that #Instagram’s new social network (called #Threads) is entering the Fediverse.

I believe #TruthSocial’s future is chained to #Trump winning the 2024 election against #Biden.
