@We Distribute First of all: I wouldn't make it only about #Mastodon. I wouldn't make it mainly about Mastodon either. #MastodonIsNotTheFediverse.
I wouldn't even make it look like it's only or mainly about Mastodon. I wouldn't give the impression that the #Fediverse is "Mastodon and some other stuff that was bolted onto Mastodon that nobody really gives a damn about, but someone told me I'd better mention that but, like, idfc..."
Also, I'd split it up, at least into various sub-topics.
First of alll, I'd present Fediverse projects, one by one, in chronological order instead of in order of size, importance or popularity. I'd with #StatusNet (2008). Or if I were to only include projects that at least understand #ActivityPub, I'd start with #Friendica (2010). I might skip projects that have been discontinued (Red Matrix, Osada, Zap...) or abandoned (Anfora, reel2bits...).
Also, I'd ask devs, creators who aren't necessarily the devs (#Diaspora*, Friendica and Hubzilla aren't maintained by their respective creators, for example) and experienced users. That's better than trying to only do my own research.
That is, I might include a mini-series with important dead projects, for example to show how #Hubzilla and #Streams came to exist. Okay, this example could be covered with one or two episodes.
Depending on the target audience, there could be a tech sub-topic which could cover protocols or other technology.
Another sub-topic would cover culture. Again, not with a focus solely on one specific project. For example, #ContentWarnings and the necessity therefor aren't only a Mastodon thing, especially since other projects cover them in different ways, unbeknownst to almost everyone on ActivityPub-based projects.
#FullTextSearch is a hot topic only on Mastodon which didn't even have it until a few days ago. On most other projects, it's absolutely normal to have it. #Quotes are similar: On Mastodon, they're still being debated. Almost everywhere else, they've been available forever, and even quoting Mastodon toots has been possible forever.
I'd also look at #AltText and #ImageDescriptions from a not-only-Mastodon point of view to break with the general perception that an #ImageDescription always goes into alt-text, full stop, because there's no room anywhere else.
A few episodes would be Mastodon-centric. One would be about the various stages of #TwitterMigration which pretty much exclusively led to Mastodon. Also, I might do an episode on how Mastodon newbies discover the Fediverse around #MastodonSocial by and by. And I'd certainly do one about how Mastodon users perceive and react upon the Fediverse outside of Mastodon and what comes in from there. Particularly those who either want the Fediverse to be Mastodon and only Mastodon or want everyone else out there to only do what can be done on Mastodon, i.e. forgo #TextFormatting and limit their posts to #500Characters, regardless of how many they could actually post.
The #Threadiverse in general and the #RedditMigration definitely deserve their own episode.
Another episode, later into the podcast, could cover cultural differences caused by how the various communities came into the Fediverse. There are the millions who have come over from #Twitter since late October 2022, and who have adapted parts of the old pre-Musk Twitter culture to Mastodon with little regard for anything else because they weren't even aware of there being anything else. There are the fresh arrivals who can't stop acting like they're still on #X, many of whom are pining for a #Bluesky invitation because it promises to be even closer to "literally Twitter without Musk". There is the "old guard" from Friendica and Hubzilla. There is the Threadiverse which basically continues to live the #Reddit culture in decentralised, non-corporate places now and tries to put up with hardly working moderation.
Last but not least, maybe a look at media coverage could be worth some episodes. -
Yet another reason why I chose #Raddle over #Lemmy for hosting my #Touhou forum: reliability. You can often see lemmy.world (which has the largest Touhou community AFAIK at 132 subscribers and 96 submissions, vs https://raddle.me/f/touhou at 124 subscribers and 970 submissions) and lemmy.blahaj.zone (2nd largest 2hu with similar subscriber count but way less submissions) out of service. Might be due to too many users using at once, some server crash, idk.
Whatever the reason is, the Lemmy software being so heavy has to be a factor. I mean come on, it requires JavaScript ffs.
Raddle meanwhile is so lightweight (written primarily in an appropriate language like PHP like a sane web-facing service would, and DOESN'T require JS), and server reboots (and I only witnessed one in my entire 5 years on that site) take only seconds. Postmill is a champ!

January 6th defendants moderating political forums?
One of the platforms hoping to grow off of the Reddit migration is Squabbles.co.
Members used to laugh at how others called it a "toxically positive" place. Friendly conversations, hard to start a fight.
That recently changed with the developer JayCLees removing TOS rules protecting trans members from abuse & disinformation AND making a public announcement that Squabblr.co was now a "free speech site".
About a week before that the conflict with JayCLees and the users started when he refused to do anything about user amightybeard, the moderator of the discussion group "conservative".
A user did a web search on the username "amightybeard" and posted what he found:
Highlights include:
1. amightybeard possibly being a January 6th defendant
2. amightybeard being a member of several hard right wing discussion sites
3. amightybeard being a rabid antivaxer
4. amightybeard being a rabid homophobe

There has been a lot of teeth-gnashing and angst over the fall of #twitter, but from some of the latest news, I think we will have to start thinking about a much bigger problem: the fall of #Google.
The #twitterMigration and the #redditMigration will be child’s play compared with a #GoogleMigration.
I’ve been looking for my own google alternatives, but everything I’ve found so far is either too complicated or too expensive.

I predict that what's going on with Reddit is going to become an object lesson in future classes on "how to not piss off absolutely everyone in a community that was largely built by volunteers."

Hello to our new #mastodon friends that have jumped over from #twitter and #reddit lately.
Enjoy your time here. The real people and communication with real people truly gives an 'early internet' air to the place.

Well, #Reddit, we've had some good times, but I cannot stand #SteveHuffman anymore. Maybe #Lemmy is ready for the big-time now. Either way, gonna give it a shot.
My sympathies to the mods and devs that have put in so many hours of hard work.

"The Reddit corpus of data is really valuable, but we don’t need to give all of that value to some of the largest companies in the world for free.”
-- Steve Huffman, #Reddit CEOThe corpus of data provided and moderated for free by their community.
-
#Reddit is only valuable if the people are on it. The recent move by #Spez is to monetize Reddit and make lots of money off user-generated content and the free work of mods. If you don’t want to spend your time making techbro CEOs even wealthier, the solution is pretty simple - migrate elsewhere, preferably to federated alternatives. Here’s a great resource for finding new communities. Bookmark it. Use it.

While I disagree with u/spez's actions, I understand his perspective. Reddit's most valuable asset is its curated text data for training Large Language Models like ChatGPT. Closing down the API protects that asset. He's likely betting that subreddit moderation will be solved with LLMs so the mods that generated that data are of little concern going forward. There will be only one chance to monetize this data asset.
The reason I disagree with u/spez's actions is because I don't believe this asset belongs to him. I'm sure he's protected from a legal perspective but from a philosophical perspective, when a user writes an idea on an online forum, they don't forfeit ownership of that idea. People who contributed to Reddit even 12 months ago had no idea their thoughts will be monetized and consumed by LLMs. We need laws to protect people's data and to democratize data assets.
I also wish u/spez would just be honest about what he's doing. Telling possibly career ending lies about developers and disregarding the mods that made Reddit is inexcusable. It's clear that Reddit has succeeded despite u/spez's leadership.

The founder, developer, operator of Lemmy may be a racist, a homophobe, and even a neo Nazi.

I read years ago that the most successful corporate leaders have high emotional intelligence and often think about the future.
The corporate culture of Reddit is to not think things through. Whether that is in how they handle *people* or lousy software engineering by not adequately testing capitalistic features like their automated site moderation which bans long term good users over mistakes.
#Huffman is a man of average intelligence who got lucky as a young adult with a web site he put up. He isn't a thinker.
He is a less successful copy of Mark Zuckerberg. They are both the Beverly Hillbillies of wealthy CEOs.

Don't bother migrating to #Tildes
I got banned after 1 day there.
Likely due to the proverbial "power abusing moderator".
A guy and I were talking about how a lot of the content on #Reddit is juvenile. I agreed with him and added that the Facebook group for my city was the next worst example I could think of.
Some other guy out of nowhere replied to me to tell me that he thought my comment was the most juvenile comment he ever read on Tildes.net.
I replied with a single word: "Adios!".
I thought that was mild.
I skimmed his profile. He seemed to be a major volunteer at Tilden.net
A few minutes later I was banned ( no reason given ) and that exchange was removed by an Admin.
Be careful if you make an account there. Apparently if you are part of the staff you are free to gratuitously insult users there and ban them if they dare say something.
