  3. @randahl It's always the same .. "can #Mastodon do thing A that #Facebook do?"

    No, it can't. #Fediverse can!

Just follow group created on #Lemmy / #Kbin / whatever and the functionality is there. Easy as that...

  5. CW: How the various Fediverse server applications are effectively tiered; CW: long (over 2,400 characters), Fediverse meta, Fediverse-beyond-Mastodon meta, Twitter mentioned, Facebook mentioned, Instagram mentioned, YouTube mentioned, TikTok mentioned, Reddit mentioned
We have a five-class Fediverse nowadays.

First class: Mastodon. It's what everyone knows (everyone outside of Lemmy at least). It's what more Mastodon users than not take for the one and only Fediverse and ActivityPub gold standard (while literally nobody outside of Mastodon does, go figure). And it's the only Fediverse server application which many Fedizens take for the entire Fediverse. (Lemmings don't refer to Lemmy as the Fediverse, although many are still completely unaware that Lemmy is connected to anything else.)

Second class: the stuff that looks like add-ons glued onto Mastodon to enhance Mastodon. Pixelfed, an Instagram clone glued to the Twitter clone as an add-on. PeerTube, a YouTube clone glued to the Twitter clone as an add-on. Loops, a TikTok clone glued to the Twitter clone as an add-on. WordPress, a blogging engine and content management system eventually glued to the Twitter clone. I guess you get the idea.

It's only up to the second class that Fediverse server software is generally recognised and accepted from the usual Mastodon-centric point of view.

Third class: other halfway well-known "clones" of or replacements for corporate online platforms that do not look like they're glued onto Mastodon as add-ons. This is limited to the Threadiverse (Lemmy, what's left of /kbin, Mbin, PieFed) as Reddit replacements and Friendica as "the" Facebook replacement.

Fourth class: anything that doesn't fall into the first three classes, but that has enough publicity. Like Bonfire and WriteFreely. Also, minimalist stuff for self-hosters like GoToSocial and snac. Hubzilla is ever so barely teetering on this class, if at all.

Basically, it's only up to the fourth class that Fediverse server software is known at all.

Finally, fifth class: the whole rest. I mean, why is Mastodon known as "the" Twitter alternative in the Fediverse if there are loads of others that are better, more powerful, sometimes even closer to Twitter in certain features? Why is Friendica known as "the" Facebook alternative in the Fediverse if Friendica's own creator has built a whole family tree of successors that outclass Friendica in various ways?

  6. CW: Many innovations that are being "brought to the Fediverse" have been in the Fediverse for a decade or longer; CW: long (over 2,500 characters), Fediverse meta, Fediverse-beyond-Mastodon meta
Whenever someone announces to "bring" something "to the Fediverse", chances are that Friendica has actually had it since 2010, for five and a half years longer than Mastodon has been around.

For example, just about everyone on Mastodon is fully convinced that Eugen Rochko has brought quote-posts to the Fediverse this year. That's because next to nobody on Mastodon knows that Friendica has been able to quote-post practically everything in the Fediverse, including Mastodon toots, for 15 years now.

And if Friendica doesn't have it, chances are still that Hubzilla has it, and that Hubzilla has probably had it for longer than Mastodon has been around, too.

For example, private messages that are actually private. Mastodon doesn't have them because the "privacy" of Mastodon DMs is only "guaranteed" by limiting whom a DM is sent to. Hubzilla does have them and has had them since 2012, since it was still named Red. How? Because Hubzilla also limits who is permitted to see a DM.

Oh, and Hubzilla even offers optional encryption on top of that.

Or how about server-independent identity? Everyone still waiting for Bluesky to finally be the pioneer who invents this and implements it for the first time? LOL! Once again, Hubzilla has had this since 2012. Not a vague concept, not an unstable proof-of-concept, but daily-driven by production-grade channels on production-grade servers. (streams) has it, too, inherited from Hubzilla through a whole number of forks. Forte has it, too, and Forte is the first and, so far, only Fediverse server software that uses ActivityPub for nomadic identity.

Now I'm waiting for someone to announce that something will "bring" actual groups "to the Fediverse". A feature that was actually introduced to the Fediverse by StatusNet in 2008, and that's also available on Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte. Not to mention that the very principle of the Threadiverse (Lemmy, the remains of /kbin, Mbin, PieFed) is based on groups.

This is what happens when you think that the feature set of the whole Fediverse is the feature set of Mastodon and maybe Pixelfed because that's all you know.

Speaking of Mastodon: Just because it's being "brought to the Fediverse", doesn't mean it'll be adopted by Mastodon.

  7. I wish I had #fediverse (#mastodon #pleroma #akkoma #friendica #hubzilla #iceshrimp #snac #lemmy #mbin #kbin #piefed ) #client , I mean like #ELK #lmst #pl-fe #phanpy #tooty #sengi #pinafore #halcyon . That would allow me to sort my subscription feed & browse sorted feed, to see ONLY relevant posts (on topic updates follow-up's?).
Well, the mastodon feature of "LISTS" tries something similiar by allowing to make a sorted list of people\subscription, sorted by your custom category/topic. But it doesn't include #tags. Each #tag must be browsed separately, individually, manually, and there is no feature of list of tags in mastodon.
Lemmy, mbin, kbin, piefed and other #reddit #forum like #activitypub implementations allow you to have topics-threads, but each thread does not replicate very well across multiple servers/instances. Can't be easely crossposted ( by pinging multiple category-bots). And doesn't replicate & easily-searchable as classic mastodon #tags.

    Other things I don't like:
    - twitter like reposts. they make you feel you subscribed not to the original "reposter" friend, but to "reposted content" that you never subscribed for. the #f2f p2p architecture of #scuttlebot (#scuttlebutt) kinda eliminates that, they don't have nor show reposts. you see there only original posts, original content, of friends you follow. Kinda helps to slow down the mind from informational overflow. You can opt out to see posts of friend's friends, if you want more. Tags are also supported there.
    - threads consist only of information aggretator url sharing in reddit like clones. Without having OP OC like in bbs|AgoraRoad , they just silo you to clickbait to other web sites.

  10. #Lemmy, #PieFed, #MBin, #Kbin, etc.?

This reminds me of the rise of the many #BBS networks in Germany during the early 1990s.

  11. Today I discovered #PieFed. It's a link aggregator like #Lemmy or #KBin ( Which has become #MBin ?), and it federates with those services, but has its own take on the user experience that I actually quite like. For one, when you sign up you get asked to select topics of interest and it automatically subscribes you to a variety of communities across the #fediverse related to those topics to help you get started.

  16. So, here are at Day 6 of #FediWriMo (the Fediverse replacement for #NaNoWriMo), and we have been having a pretty good time with the competition. Some of us are maybe a little bit too competitive -- but that's just how some of us are. ;)

If you want to join us, find us on FediWriMo

If you are already on #Lemmy / #PieFed / #Mbin / #Kbin, then add the community to your instance if it isn't already there: [email protected]

We'd love to have more people join the community and share their daily experiences.

  18. @mradcliffe The danger in this, however, is that another Fediverse feature that's way older than Mastodon and at the same time absent from Mastodon would be reappropriated as something else, making Mastodon even more incompatible with the rest of the Fediverse.

In 2017, Mastodon introduced its content warning field. Ever since, almost everyone on Mastodon has been fully convinced that Eugen Rochko had invented that field from scratch. (Be honest, how about you?)

However, Mastodon's content warning field is actually a summary field that has been used by StatusNet, Friendica and Hubzilla as such since 2008, 2010 and 2012 respectively. Mastodon hadn't had any support for that summary field at first, for you don't need a summary for 500 characters. And I guess that coder from the demo scene who submitted the merge request that reappropriated the summary field as a content warning field was blissfully unaware that Mastodon was actually connected to something that did use the summary field as such.

And now you have Mastodon users scolding Friendica users because the latter allegedly misuse the CW field for "like a subject or smth idk", unaware that the self-same field has been the abstract field on Friendica for five and a half years longer than Mastodon has even existed and some seven years longer than Mastodon had its CW field.

Today, in 2025, next to nobody on Mastodon knows that the Fediverse already has group actors, and probably neither do many on the *keys. Neither Mastodon nor Misskey nor their respective forks have or support groups in any way.

If they go and reappropriate group actors as starter packs, this will break compatibility with Friendica groups, Hubzilla forums, (streams) groups, Forte groups, Lemmy communities, /kbin magazines, Mbin magazines, PieFed communities, NodeBB forums etc., all of which can be and often already are being followed by Mastodon and *key users right now. And again, they've all had group actors since their respective inception.

  22. So, what lemmy/kbin (or similar software, I don't keep up with popular fediverse software) servers would you recommend to join?

I haven't actively used Reddit in a long time and sometimes I just miss the message board feel. I know I could use this account for that, but I think I'd like to keep it separated by context.

My main concern is how well is the server moderated. Of course a nerdy server would be preferred, but as long as the server is federated, I think I am fine with any place that would have me (and again, is well moderated)
