If you’ve been to my site before—you may have noticed a bit of a change since yesterday.
Last night, I pushed a lot of features and stylistic changes to my site (over 100 commits?!) It was long overdue and I’m feeling happy I got it done (but not too happy...

Michelle Barker: Little Websites Everywhere.. “Building a website feels old-fashioned these days. How many more websites do I have left in me before the old fire flickers and dies? Is snuffed out. Before making websites is no longer a viable way to earn a living? The web will change drastically within my lifetime, maybe someday soon, indeed it already has. Maybe it really will fizzle out, a […]

Yesterday, it became a year and four months. Even when time flies, it's still important to take things one day at a time.

«talk: the P2P chat from 1983 that a VPN brought back to life»
Before the internet, people could already chat; talk is not dead, it just runs quietly through a VPN now.

on starting a blog
❝ Don’t worry too much about the details. Just start getting things out there that you care about and the rest will come in time. As you post more, you will realize what you care about sharing the most, who likes your content, and where you fit in the web. I wish I had understood earlier that a blog does not need to launch fully formed. It can become itself while you are writing it.

I have updated my website! 🥳
I added a new blogpost: The bliss of shouting into the void. I had this one written for a while now and thought it was about time to finally post it.
I also added a whole new page: Books I've read

Well, I think this is the dumbest joke that I ever wrote 75 lines of Python for.
But if you ever wanted to put your toots in a .plan file and get fingered, I've got you.

Just revamped the website of the nice restaurant in town. Yay for html and css!
-
I've updated #Rogallo with a new optional mouse-friendly toolbar, so it's easier to get at application commands if you're browsing away with the mouse.

New blog post: "Green City Freiburg in August 2026"
We took a trip to Mundenhof animal park yesterday.
I’ve been hiding inside most of the summer, because temperatures around here have been insane.
After a shorter heatwave with days over 40°C, this second heatwave hasn’t been quite as hot (mid 30s °C), but long and relentless.

Free flights to Jeju? South Korea wants to spread tourism beyond Seoul, but they're sending people to an island already packed with tourists 🤔 And there's a twist: the only airline on that route is Jeju Air, the one behind the 2024 Muan crash. Covert bailout? New post on the blog 👇
-
¿Vuelos gratis a Jeju? El gobierno coreano quiere sacar el turismo de Seúl, pero manda a la gente justo a la isla que ya está llena de turistas 🤔 Y hay algo más: la única aerolínea que opera la ruta es Jeju Air, la del accidente de Muan 2024. ¿Rescate encubierto? Te lo cuento en el blog 👇

Stract is gone. You might remember me mentioning an open search engine called Stract that I was using for some search experiments a couple years ago. I went to check on an API question and found that the search engine had been taken down. The developer, Mikkel Denker, told me he took the site down in early June. I told him I appreciated the work he put into Stract. Small search engines aren’t […]

I’ve gone completely Ga Ga for Gopher.
I started a real Gopher server for NITETIME.NET and it’s quickly turning into one of my favorite parts of the whole project.
If you have a Gopher client:
If you’re stuck here in the modern web:
It’s growing almost daily.

Another big shout out to Gemcities users!
I started GemCities at the beginning of March 2026. A mere five months ago. I had started really getting into the whole Gemini protocol/small-web thing and decided that it would be cool if there was a simple way to test the waters without actually having to stand up a server to publish, while still being in total control of your capsule. The idea came to me from the past, the exact vibe that the small-web encompasses, in the form of the classic GeoCities. Simple, easy to use, no hassles with […]https://offgridholdout.org/journal/another-big-shout-out-to-gemcities-users/

Thoughts on the web, small-web and federation
I've actually been thinking about this for a while... a couple of years probably. But I ran across a post on mastodon.social that made me stop and pause and think, "OK, what is really the status of things right now, in mid-2026?" The post read: As attempts to lock down "the #internet" grow, alongside it will grow the rebirth of an age of #zines, #BBS, #mixtapes, #burnedCDs, and other hand-to-hand media. People will bypass restrictions, even if it's by paper and #sneakernet or #CB radios in […]https://offgridholdout.org/journal/thoughts-on-the-web-small-web-and-federation/
