Why am I writing a blog in 2026?
It took a surprising amount of effort to move off the sofa where I was scrolling the hashtag #indieweb on Mastodon and come back to this site to actually post something. I bought this domain back when the .cymru TLD first became available and then somehow platforms not webpages because everyone's default thirdspace on the internet and I never really used it. I love watching curling during the winter Olympics (much to the disgust of Teen). However, when the teammates yell at the sweeper to more! more! it reminds me of that dumb early internet game where you're beating (and cooking?) eggs while an animated whisk yells "Pisk! du pisker, du!" and other snide remarks.
Does anybody else remember that?

Sometimes, I miss certain aspects of the old internet 👴🏻:
- Usenet via NNTP (discussion threads in plain text)
- Chats on IRC (chat without bullshit)
- Simple websites that were about content and passion instead of monetarization, tracking and advertisement.Meanwhile the modern net in 2025:
- Ads and intrusive tracking omnipresent
- Centralization, platform economy, gate keeping and entshittificatiion.
- Overregulation and legal pitfalls everywhere.The Fediverse is a step into the right direction: Open protocol, decentralized and community driven, in a time where huge parts of the net are simply driven by corporate greed and governments that want to regulate everything.

But the emergence of blogging and "Web 2.0" sites in the late '90s and early 2000s gave rise to a constellation of services that would offer to host all of your thoughts without requiring you to build the website part of your website. The TypePad shutdown is rough news for the site's remaining user base—and it's yet another tranche of old Internet content that will only be available via the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, when it's available at all.
