A Curtin University study followed Aboriginal preschoolers learning Noongar through “yarning circles” that blend storytelling with fluid multilingual speech. Researchers call it translingual yarning pedagogy, and it’s reshaping how language revitalization gets taught. #Noongar #LanguageRevitalization #IndigenousEducation https://www.anthropology.net/p/a-kangaroo-puppet-a-noongar-word

#Australia - Online #racism is significantly affecting mental health, #FirstNations people say: ‘It’s like carrying a bully in your pocket’
Australian Human Rights Commission has called for a digital duty of care to prevent #SocialMedia #algorithms from incentivising ‘racist’ content
Douglas Smith and Sarah Collard
Fri 12 Jun 2026 11.00 EDTExcerpt: "Sam Bennell started a social media account to share his deep love of #Noongar culture and language. The 27-year-old gained nearly 10,000 followers in just a few months across Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, but says when he began sharing more of the traditional culture and language from south-west Western Australia he noticed a distinct change in the comments left under his posts.
" 'All the racists started commenting,' he says.
"He told Guardian Australia that his videos appeared to be pushed to a wider audience, which was attracting negativity. 'Facebook seems to be pushing my content to racists for some reason, which I don’t get,' he says. 'I haven’t been posting lately because it has been taking a toll on my mental health … all that online stuff is just crazy.' "

It has been a while since I've devoted any time to some #bird #Photography or much #birding at all.
Today, following up (at last) on tales of a #WanderingWhistlingDuck having set up shop at one of our local lakes, we dropped by after my rehab session.
Naturally, it was pouring with rain.
Now anyone who tells you that it is "nice weather for ducks" - it isn't. They are not fond of going out into the pouring rain any more than we are.
However, there is a wildlife centre at the end of the lake the duck was reported to be at, so we popped in there. Turns out there was a #Noongar language and culture in-service training course for teachers going on, but we only really saw them when they came out onto the veranda to eat lunch.
Searching the paperbarks out in the lake, we spotted large numbers of #PinkEaredDuck s, lots of #GreyTeal several #Shoveler s , and a small group of #FreckledDuck s. Then @leece spotted something - next to the Freckled Ducks was something else. It was only present for a couple of minutes, but she managed to snap a couple of shots of the Whistling Duck through the rain, while I got shots of almost everything else.
After, I did a bit of post-processing on the shots, and here we are.
All shot on #NikonP900 and postprocessed in #Snapseed .

Here we have part of the #MilkyWay.
Near the centre we have #Crux, the #SouthernCross, along with the #CoalSack.
Now to share a bit of what I have learned about how the traditional custodians of where I live call things.
Pretty much everywhere the Coal Sack is the head of Wetj, the Emu.
In #Whadjuck #Noongar lands, Crux is Waalitj, the Wedge-Tailed Eagle, but in #Yued lands Crux and the Pointers are Yongka - the kangaroo, with Crux forming the head, and the Pointers being the front paws.

Jarrah forest a living system that includes everything above and below ground. The soil. The roots. The insects. The small mammals, reptiles, and birds. The fungi and microbial life that bind the forest together.

Not the best storyline, but it is still impressive how a #documentary about insects ("the giants") can give you a deeper understanding on evolution's limitless possibilities. #Nature, #multispecies , #evolution (which for me includes #revolution ) rock!:)

I forgot, I also took one other shot last night! This was taken with the #dwarf3 's wide angle lens, and is only about 3 minutes of data.
It will look upside down for the Northern Hemisphere folks, but here we have all of #Orion or #Nyingarn (the echidna in #Noongar) in one frame.
A bit of light post-processing in Stellar Studio and #Snapseed.

It is the end of #Kambarang and the start of #Birak here in #Noongar Country. With that the Emu is setting early in the evening. As compensation, we are now getting the #EtaCarinaNebula instead.
So last night I did a mosaic shot of with with my #Dwarf3 #SmartTelescope from my back yard.
Only a couple of hours effective exposure, but I am really happy with the results.
2hrs 13 minutes, 60s@60, Ha/OIII filter.
Postprocessed in the #DwarfLab Stellar Studio and #snapseed.

Yesterday we visited Datjoin Rock just before sunset. This is one of the closest granite outcroppings to Beacon, and no doubt has significance to the local peoples. Alas, there is almost no information about the local Noongar peoples in any of the local material.
We paid our respects, and had a little look around.
This is the start of Wildflower Season out in the Wheatbelt, and already the orchids are putting on a lovely show.

I say #Makuru instead of “winter” out of respect —
I wouldn’t have used this seasonal designationa quarter of a century ago without permission,
but now, because #Noongar words have seguedinto broader community speech through Noongar
