Common and familiar across almost the entire Australian continent. Large gray parrot with pink underparts and a light cap. It tends to be noisy and active and is usually close to a water source. Typically feeds on the ground, where it consumes a range of seeds and grasses. Occurs in a wide range of habitats, including urban areas, parks, and gardens. Occurs in pairs, small groups, or enormous flocks.

  3. If you think our human babies have a penetrating cry when they need something you haven't heard a baby #Galah Today we had one in a tree harrassing his parents who seemed unmoved by his ear-shattering squawking.for hours.

  4. The local #Galah community were very hungry today - I just put out the food for the #Birds and they flew down to eat before I had even started to climb the stairs.

  5. Also spotted on yesterday afternoon's walk:

A Red Wattlebird, Pink Galah, Laughing Kookaburra and the gorgeous Satin Bowerbird.

  6. Yesterday we visited Datjoin Rock just before sunset. This is one of the closest granite outcroppings to Beacon, and no doubt has significance to the local peoples. Alas, there is almost no information about the local Noongar peoples in any of the local material.

We paid our respects, and had a little look around.

This is the start of Wildflower Season out in the Wheatbelt, and already the orchids are putting on a lovely show.

  11. Morning walk, 6 km today, in a beautiful & sunny weather. Came across these birds - the Galah, one of the most common & familiar of the Australian parrots, found across most of Australia. Recognizable by its grey upper body & pink lower body.

  12. Should have brought my camera. About 50 galahs and rainbows having a territorial dispute on the middle of the park. The sound is glorious.

  13. A female Galah (one of three pairs I observed feeding on the edge of the sports fields at UQ).

Both male and female look similar, but the female has a red eye.

In Australia, "galah" often refers to a person of dubious intelligence (aka an idiot). Usage: "You bloody galah! What do you think you're doing?"
Presumably this came about by watching the antics of this bird, esp. in flight (quite random, almost appearing drunk on occasions).

  14. Galahs are common all over Southern Victoria. They are the only bird I know which is curious enough to sit and watch humans being silly!

  15. Went for a walk down to the local creek reserve, found some birds.

A Bell Miner (Bellbird), a pair of Galahs and a female Satin Bowerbird.

  16. Dawn At the dawning of the day, On the road to Gunnedah, When the sky is pink and grey As the wings of a wild #galah… When the world is all made anew... 17. What a difference 3 weeks makes

Two Galahs huddle in the cold of Ekka week mid-August, vs this morning's bright hot morning sunshine Galah

My conclusion? More weather reports should include Galahs

  18. Also at the botanic gardens was a Yellow Wattlebird, and another Eastern Rosella. When the rosella called, it partially fanned its tail, which I caught here.

Back at our campsite this afternoon, a Galah wandered past the caravan, so I took its photo too.

  20. #NoWorries has basically been absorbed into British slang now. I reckon you can blame Neighbours and Home And Away for that.

Also commonplace now is #Shonky and #Crook as in ill.

I have yet to hear average Brits call each other a #Galah or #Hoon but I live in hope.

  25. Here’s another imaginary composite creature commission! This one was for a study group- a trio of friends who are studying the hammerhead shark, hedgehog and galah (or rose-breasted) cockatoo, respectively.

The HammerheadHedgeGalah is handprinted on Japanese washi paper, 9" x 11" (22.9 cm x 27.9 cm) in silver, brown and pink.

  26. Four #Galahs (pronounced β€œga… laaa” in aussie)… πŸ˜‹

They’re getting in a last feed before the sun sets I think.

If someone refers to a person as a #Galah, theyd be saying they’re not so bright.

But these foraging birds are pretty switched-on, in my book.

They read the play well, as in they know when to stay put or fly away in the face of danger…

You can see them look, even squint as they think… and assess the situation and weigh up the intent of the approaching doofus with the camera phone.

Thankfully these ones, whilst a little shy thought I was no threat. They kept picking through the freshly cut grass here, on this verge.

  27. Took a shortcut through a small industrial area in the SE suburbs of #melbourne the other day and spotted these cute displays.

A pink #galah with a gorgeous head crest and a #kookaburra - these were painted on corrugated iron, which (I imagine) would have been challenging.

Also a #birdofparadise, #butterfly, #puppy and girl with a watering can tending to the little palms.

This was displayed on a brick wall of another nearby factory, separated by a staff carpark.

An unexpected, but pleasant little find!

  28. Here are a coupla #Galahs (pronounced β€œga… laarrs” in aussie drawl)… πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Historically if someone in Oz called another person a #Galah theyd be saying they’re not so bright.

But in reality, these birds are super switched-on… they know exactly what’s happening around them, make eye contact, assess threat levels to perfection and only deviate from exploring and foraging if they β€˜need’ to, as a result.
