  2. Out to check on the (current lack of) progress on the connector path from Scotchmans Creek Trail to the Djerring Trail. Half built, barricaded off, "detour" signs saying "until November 30" and a "Cyclists Dismount" sign pointing along the "Cycling detour" preventing you from riding part of it. Any bets on whether any further work happens in 2025?

ps, the traffic lights shown in the detour brochure/map at the Drummond St/Atherton Rd intersection don't exist, they never did

    DM me.
I'm curious to know what's happening on the ground.

  8. Hi Mastodon!

I'm a computer scientist working on the #MiniZinc modelling language. The perfect way to model your #optimization / #orms problems. (At least if you you were to ask me).

As an #OPTIMA research fellow at #Monash University, I generally love research into programming languages & combinatorial optimisation methods.

When I don't have anything to say about work, you may find me posting about my hobbies, such as music, birds, cycling, and cricket, instead.

    * weniger Lithium benötigt,
    * mehr Energie pro Volumeneinheit hat,
    * länger hält und
    * zum halben Preis der vorherrschenden Lithium-Ionen-Technologie hergestellt werden kann

  10. I was at the August 1976 anti-Fraser demo at Monash. Since then I've often looked at photos of the event, but today I saw a photo which I'm pretty sure included me! It's impossible to be certain, but several contemporaries have agreed its me. BTW, he was barricaded into a toilet. They claim it was an engineer's office, but also say they had to squeeze him out of a small window. An engineer with only a window that small in his office?

  15. Posting on behalf of Linda Przhedetsky at #UTS:

Are you a #researcher who is wondering how to communicate your findings and make an #impact

Join Linda Przhedetsky, UTS (profiles.uts.edu.au/Linda.Przh) and Steph Slack, #Monash (au.linkedin.com/in/stephslack) for a free, 2hr session that's open to anyone interested in learning about translating research into a range of policy and advocacy contributions.

    We'll cover:
    - What is a policy contribution?
    - Which aspects of research could influence policy? (we'll demystify the policy process!)
    - Who should you share your research with?
    - How can you identify, connect, and collaborate with allies in your field?
    - What are the most effective ways to make a difference?

By the end of this workshop, you'll have:
    - An understanding of how policy is made
    - Practical next steps for translating your research into policy and advocacy contributions
    - An understanding of how to design effective key messages
    - Resources for developing your skills further

This Zoom workshop will be held on Tuesday November 14th on Zoom, 2-4pm AEDT.

Please share this with anyone who might be interested!

  16. Next was a great talk by Anita Sarma on engineering inclusivity in software products at #Monash Information Technology. I loved the framing here of "inclusivity bugs" with the GenderMag system introduced here youtube.com/watch?v=l-BXdmWvUV (6/10) #inclusion #HCI #accessibility

  17. First was an excellent talk by Colin Camerer on individual behavior and game theory at #Monash Business School. Camerer casts a wide net, going over experiments in economic games, #neuroscience and #economics, and even chimpanzee research! Highly recommend youtube.com/watch?v=7pyYjvqhf2 (2/6)

  18. CW: melbourne weather wind

Just saw a motorist have to stop and give way.... to a large beanbag, part of the #Monash hard rubbish, tumbling end over end down the middle of the road at a brisk walking pace

  19. CW: hard rubbish

Two weeks until the annual third world festival of street rubbish (#Monash council hard rubbish collection)

Seem to have acquired ourselves a near-new Ikea rocking chair that someone thought surpless to requirements

  20. Next was a short talk by John Grundy introducing a personas and design guidelines tool for diverse end users at #Monash youtube.com/watch?v=9XPguZLUlt (9/11) #HCI #accessibility

  21. Next was an incredible talk by Greg Adamson on how to think about #AI recommendations at #Monash Information Technology. I love the framing on thinking of AI the same way science has framed understanding of natural phenomenon over the years. Highly recommend youtube.com/watch?v=PTuimDoX5N (10/12)

  22. Next was a great talk by Stefan Sarkadi on creating deceptive machines at #Monash. This is particularly important as the current crop of #LLMs is particularly adept at deception, so understanding what causes it to emerge is crucial youtube.com/watch?v=hEibCJBprP (9/11)

  23. Next was a fantastic talk by Michael Kremer on #innovation, #economics, and social good at #Monash Business School. Kremer nicely covers cases why commercial incentives might not be sufficient in many cases and what institutions could foster additional social innovation. Highly recommend youtube.com/watch?v=kG32D1taNC (8/10)

  24. @[email protected] A railway connecting Chadstone, Monash Uni and Rowville to the city is an idea whose time has well and truly come.

Unfortunately, despite billions of dollars spent on new roads and countless lies from both sides of politics, it's never been built.

Just like the Doncaster train line, and the light rail extension to Knox.

    From The Age:

"A train line to Rowville in Melbourne’s outer east was first proposed in 1969. But five decades later in the federal electorate of Aston, the car is still king.

"After rail through Knoxfield and Rowville to Ferntree Gully was proposed in 1969, several state governments toyed with the idea.

"Ted Baillieu’s Coalition government revived the Rowville link a little over a decade ago and identified a route, but the project was shelved until a central city rail line was built.

"Premier Daniel Andrews promised to plan a light rail Rowville link ahead of the 2018 state election, but it was soon put on the backburner and overshadowed by the Suburban Rail Loop – which does not run through Aston – and now federal Labor’s trackless rapid transit proposal."

  26. @[email protected] At first glance, this is a brilliant circular economy and sustainable transport initiative.

"A Monash University team pioneering an eco-friendly alternative to the millions of railway sleepers across Australia has received a $500,000 research and development grant from the Victorian Government.

"Since 2015, Monash Institute of Railway Technology (Monash IRT), along with Victorian company Integrated Recycling, has been exploring the potential for transforming recycled plastics waste – such as shampoo bottles and plastic milk cartons – along with agricultural waste, into long-lasting composite plastic railway sleepers.

"The result has been the successful development of Duratrack sleepers, which have replaced timber sleepers in low-speed railway yards and sidings as part of the upgrade of Victorian regional lines including Shepparton, Warrnambool and the Murray Basin. The sleepers have also been widely trialled by tourist and heritage railways, Metro Trains Melbourne, V/Line and Queensland Rail."
