  1. i've created a list of some new and not so new monospace fonts for editing, writing and coding. it's 2026 and some fresh paint is desperately needed!

  2. JuliaMono [1] is a very nice font. I’m also partial to Berkeley Mono [2] and Input Mono [3] for my source code authoring. I always use Iosevka [4] for my terminal font.

What are your favorite coding fonts?

  7. JetBrains vs custom font issue

I usally use a retro font called "MxPlusIBMVGA9x16". Childhood nostalgy. I can use it anywhere but in JetBrains terminals. It is not listed as monospace font in the reworked terminal's menu. It is listed as monospace editor font though. 🤷

I dissected the font with FontForge and with Python's fonttools lib too. Panose table, isFixedPitch are in order. What should I look for to fix?

  8. use it, Recently I have found that it has been used to write screenplay in Bengali as a Courier 10 equivalent, which is the mandated font for writing screenplays in Latin script fontsinuse.com/uses/72956/bacc #Monospace #Bengali 2/2

  9. Interesting effect, I'm guessing that the typographer chose the application of bold and normal. It looks like a monospaced font. The very thin joins, or even gaps, in the strokes that are meeting the horizontal, or vertical, at an angle work well for me to add a sense of 'mechnicalness' (N, Z)

  10. I've tried out Iosevka Mono in the past, but wasn't aware of all the diferent kinds of variations and customization options it offers!

    It looks great!

  11. Some monospace terminal fonts I've enjoyed over the years:

    JetBrains Mono
    Cascadia Code
    Ubuntu Mono
    Roboto Mono
    Comic Mono
    Fantasque Sans Mono
    Departure Mono
    Mononoki

Currently I'm mostly using Comic Mono and Departure Mono.

Which fonts have you folks been using lately? 😁

  12. I'm not sure if I've mentioned Departure Mono on here before, but it's a great pixel font. It's just gorgeous.

I use it in my terminal and IDEs.
It also looks amazing when playing :)

    To quote the creators:
"Departure Mono is a monospaced pixel font with a lo-fi technical vibe"

    departuremono.com/

    EDIT: wording

  13. Hm.. Which one to choose? 🤔

At first, the font on the left was the clear winner. But the more I looked at the one on the right, the more I started to appreciate its slab design.

One interesting aspect of the font on the right is that it's not hand-drawn, it’s generated from code.

  14. There are surprisingly few fonts based on, or used by, actual typewriters. In the interests of finding out the right answers by posting wrong ones:

Prestige Elite, Typewriter Elite (balls and fillets), Courier (no balls, slab serifs), LTC Remington Typewriter (wavy seven).

A2 Typewriter, 1403 Vintage Mono, and Orator feature in the next post.

Please boost (to increase the rage replies).

  15. I've been using JetBrains Mono for over 5 years and consider it one of the best programming fonts out there (maybe even the best). It gets so many things right: clear distinction between 1 & l, o & 0, and no unnecessary curves that can be more distracting than helpful.

Still, I felt like trying something new, so I gave Cascadia Mono a try. It has its own pros and cons compared to JetBrains Mono, so I’m curious whether it’ll stick around.

    What font do you use?

  16. In case some of you like pixel fonts:

Departed Mono is a gorgeous font that looks great in the terminal!

  17. Maple 7 is out and damn is it a gorgeous, open-source, variable weight monospace font with superb italics, ligatures, nerd font symbols and Chinese support and a ton of options.

I'm not sure it's going to replace my beloved MonoLisa as my primary monospace font but I’m going to give it a shot.

I really like the small gaps option.

  22. #Serif #terminal / #programming #fonts remain far and few between. Why? I find them more legible and there are a few out there that look really nice.

My favorites are "Go Mono" and "Luxi Mono", both by Holmes & Bigelow who did many of the popular (early) #Macintosh fonts. "PT Mono" is nice too (has less serifs). Give them a try for a few days and see yourself!

Turns out JetBrains made it free and open source, so download and use!

I haven't used VSCode (is that what you're using?) so I don't know how you configure the font in it, but surely there's a way.

  28. I'm really struggling to find a certain #monospace #font. I have seen it somewhere online. The special feature was the number characters, which were designed to visually represent the character's value by the area the ink covers of the rectangle around the character. E.g. "1" was very thin, covering 10% of the background, "4" covered 40%, "9" was reaaly bold and covered 90% of the background, and so on.

Does anyone know of this font? I saw it posted in the context of #dataviz #heatmaps #rstats
