My partner and I love capturing moments through photos, but our cloud storage was overflowing. I decided to take matters into my own hands and turn my idle workstation into a self-hosted photo album. The result? A private, accessible online gallery where we can relive our memories without worrying about cloud storage limits.

This project has been a fantastic learning experience. It was a crash course in full-stack development, pushing me to dive deeper into frontend technologies, understand JWT for secure access, and implement granular visibility controls. It wasn't always smooth sailing, but the learning was invaluable. Building something I use daily is incredibly satisfying.

The photo album is designed for ease of use, with simple setup, drag-and-drop photo management, and intuitive visibility controls using `.hidden` and `.private` suffixes. Cloudflare Tunnel ensures secure online access, prioritizing privacy and personal control. It's all wrapped up in a user-friendly package.

This is an early-stage project, and I'd love for others in the Hachyderm community to try it out! If you're new to self-hosting, feel free to clone the GitHub repository and give it a shot. I'm always open to feedback, whether it's technical or just general impressions. Let's explore the world of self-hosting together!

  17. I think I'm starting to outgrow the sqlite database I've been using. I've been able to get along with some of the foreign key stuff I want to do, but now I'm running into challenges with it accepting DateTime objects. I might need something a tad more powerful.

I'm already halfway through a SQLAlchemy -> SQLModel refactor, I guess what's one more branch on the code?! After all, that's what git is for.

I could probably get away with refactoring the other two classes, but I want all of my testing to be passing before I keep going.

  21. Gateway stuff is done for now, so it's time to work on the DHCP range data.

A network can have 0..n DHCP ranges and each DHCP range should be editable with the CRUD operations.

C - create: add a new DHCP range, make sure it doesn't overlap with another DHCP range already present on this network. All IPs should be in range, too.
R - read: render DHCP range information and overall IPAM utilization of the network. A DHCP range covering 200 IPs on a /24 should, for example, show roughly 80% of the IPs are used. Vuetify has UI elements to render stuff like this.
U - update: change data about the range such as the start/end addresses, name, or description.
D - delete: remove a DHCP range <--> network association and the associated record(s) from the db.

    Validations:
DHCP range doesn't overlap other IPs in use on the network, such as the gateway, static IP assignments on that network (which I haven't even gotten to), or other DHCP ranges.

There's going to be a LOT of testing to go into this and I think that's why I like this kind of stuff. It forces me to think of all the use cases, write tests, add code, and balance all of it together.

  25. Vuetify is now my component framework of choice for this project. It's been nice to work with, there are tons of examples to demo features, and I can find sample code easily enough that I can incorporate in to my project.

I still have a LOT of concepts to learn around Vue/Vuetify, but now I have a foundation to build on.

My next step will be designing all the pages I want to write and working that into Vue's routing structure. This also would be the time to figure out a color scheme/theme that works for me as I map out my demo app.

Thanks to Vue's import functionality, I'm able to include a single <navigation /> tag in to the app and that will bring in my header/navigation bar for any page that needs it.

  26. One more night of working on this and I got the barebones CRUD operations going with Vuetify. The code all works and I can touch up the appearance the next time I look at this.

Here's all the functionality I have done. 1 and 2 were done last night:

    1. get all items
    2. click on the table to get the details of one item
    3. on that page, click an edit button and send those. changes back to the database. Upon submission, go back to the item detail page
    4. delete item from the item detail page
    5. create a new item and redirect to the new item detail page
