  6. My dad just told me that his maternal grandma used to spin and weave cotton to make calico. I’m gobsmacked. Time to get back to my #spinning practice! Life’s been so damn hectic, I can’t believe I ever even had time for it. The calm will return, I hope. #AncestralMemory #textiles #fibers

It's been around for a while, but I thought I'd try and do some publicity.

The blog post has more details but let me know if you have any thoughts or questions!

  16. Нити и волокна (Threads & Fibers)

  19. I just released the aws-sdk-http-async gem: github.com/thomaswitt/aws-sdk- - an Async HTTP handler plugin for the AWS SDK for Ruby, built on async-http

Why? I am a heavy DynamoDB user - and I first thought, the official AWS SDK for Ruby gem aws-sdk-ruby would be fiber-compatible, but it isnt.

  24. I ran out of cotton and then remembered that my mom also has a bush in her yard so I went and harvested it the other day. Back to the beginning of the process.

I make my rolags without carding brushes. I just take my time and card by hand. Slow. I don’t have much cotton to work with, so it’s a way to savor the material.

I’m also sprouting new cotton plants from seed in the garden: the native variety I’ve been growing and a new variety of green cotton called Davis Green. 🌱

  29. Today, I taught myself to ply. After watching a couple of YouTube videos, I devised a #DIY method using my three homemade spindles, a cardboard box and a bit of duct tape. Probably seems like a very clunky method to those of you who have professional tools, but I'm actually quite excited about this free setup. #spinning #fibers #fiberarts

  34. The Long, Knotty, World-Spanning Story of String | Hakai Magazine

"On its own, a stray thread cannot accomplish much. But when several fibers are twisted into yarn, and yarn into strands, and strands into string or rope, a once feeble thing becomes both strong and flexible—a hybrid material of limitless possibility. A string can cut, choke, and trip; it can also link, bandage, and reel. String makes it possible to sew, to shoot an arrow, to strum a chord. It’s difficult to think of an aspect of human culture that is not laced through with some form of string..."

  36. Fibers by Dieter Velt, 2022

    History, Production, Properties, Market

This textbook covers the production of all relevant natural and man-made fibers, their inner structure, properties, applications, markets and historic development. More than 1,600 photos, maps and sketches complement the text. The properties of important fibers are compared in a large number of tables and graphics to simplify selecting an appropriate fiber for a given application.
