One more thing that I haven't been making clear enough! What I'm working on isn't just an adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Julius Caesar.
The work that I am making is titled Ĵwlŷs Kæsar: A FFXIV Tragedy and Annotary in Five Acts. Tragedy, yes. But it's also an "annotary." This work is by me, Ellis Arcwolf.
An annotary is usually a "found" document, a dry academic treatise, or a classic work (like, say, a fictional adaptation of a classical play that happens to be called "The Tragedy of Ĵwlŷs Kæsar" by Liam Meri'a Morvelet). It serves as the central keystone that justifies the presence of the notes.
Those notes (footnotes, annotations, margin doodles, whatever) are true narrative engine of an annotary. This is where the character's voice breaks through the formal constraints to provide personal anecdotes, biases, and emotional truth.
The notes within an annotary aren't just for the reader; they are often written by a specific character within the world, making the act of annotating part of the story itself.
A popular example of this narrative style, which is more often called "ergodic literature," is Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov. The "story" is a 999-line poem, but the real narrative is found in the increasingly unhinged side commentary by the diegetic editor.
So that's what I'm doing. That should explain it more clearly. 😊

I fucking love writing for Maxx. 😹 He's such a joy:
BRWTYS
Only be patient till we have appeased
The multitude, beside themselves with fear;*
And then we will deliver you the cause
Why I, that did love Kæsar when I struck him,
Have thus proceeded.
* One time, when I was little, some 12-year-old donkey tried to call time out because he had to scratch himself, but really, he was just trying to score a goal and kept thinking that somehow him doing it during time out was gonna be a move I'd let him get away with. So I kicked him in the shins until he cried and took my ball home with me. I was a nine-year-old girl at the time. I feel like this represents a kind of foreshadowing, but when I start doing literary criticism on the work I’m in, shit starts getting too real even for me.#FFXIV #FFXIVWrite #WritingCommunity #WritersOfMastodon #AmWriting #Shakespeare #JuliusCaesar #FanFiction #Metafiction #CharacterVoice #WIP

I rewrote some of the tragedy I've been working on moving from Shakespeare's 16th century to Morvelet's Fifth Era.
You see, Morvelet didn't write in Eorzean. Or even Early Modern Eorzean. He wrote in Middle Eorzean. And so his REAL language goes a little like this:
Ye blockes, ye stones, ye duller than bestaille!
O ye harde hertes, ye felouns of Allage,
Knewe ye nat Pompêy? Many a tyme and ofte
Have ye y-clumben up to mansiouns hye,
To railes and landing paddes, ye, to vent-stackes,
Your infantes in your armes, and ther have sat
Al the longe day, with pacient expectacioun,
To seen grete Pompêy passe the stretes of Allage.Read more: https://taper-project.jijivisa.org/#find
Yeah. I fucking turned Shakespeare into Morvelet into FUCKING CHAUCER, then I kept the iambic pentameter anyway.
I can do motherfucking ANYTHING! 🎆

📜 COMMUNIQUE FROM THE STUDIUM 📜
We are proud to announce the digital hub for The Taper Project™ (MÆT-LP) is now live.
Dedicated to the recovery and iambometrical transcreation of the works of the "Bard of Sagon," Liam Meri'a Morvelet, this initiative bridges the gap between Fifth Astral Era drama and modern Eorzean performance.
🌐 Explore the Taper Project™ website: https://taper-project.jijivisa.org
Supported by the Sons of Saint Coinach, the Heralds of Jijivisa, the Sharlayan Studium, and Garlond Ironworks, our team of Archons and specialists is currently analyzing The Tragedy of Ĵwlŷs Kæsar.
From quantum aetherophysics to Allagan xenolinguistics, we are ensuring the psychospiritual integrity of these ancient myths and legends remains unbroken.
🕯️ Let the Taper be lit.
P.S. In a few days, the PDF of the full document will be downloadable from this website! I'll post a copy to A Murder of Arcwolves as well!

I did a thing! I fed the preface of my diegetic #FFXIV play—an Allagan adaptation of Julius Caesar—into NotebookLM. The result is... honestly kind of awesome! 🤯
Hearing someone analyze the Fifth Astral Era history of Sagon and the translation work of my OC Joan Arcwolf-Dhivri as if it were real history is fucking wild. It captures the "scholarly adventure" vibe of the original text perfectly.
It’s an explainer into a diegetic story that exists because I adapted it myself, about a history that never happened, that feels completely real.

Today I was asked what I was working on fiction-wise, and I realized why I maybe feel a little overwhelmed. :P
Right now I'm editing two diegetic pieces written or translated by my Final Fantasy XIV characters, including my Allagan adaptation of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar—Ĵwlŷs Kæsar (set in 3AE) by Liam Meri'a Morvelet (5AE), translated by a team led by L. Maxx Arcwolf-Kisne commissioned by his mother Joan Arcwolf-Dhivri (7AE)—and a quantum aetherophysics paper proposing a cosmological model for the entire FFXIV multiverse named the "666 Fractal Manifold Model."
On top of that I'm editing a fan fiction short story about my FFXIV characters on a mission in Dalmasca named "My Brother's Keeper," which is the story of how a Cain-type "big brother" figure does right by his Abel (by choosing to be his brother's keeper rather than shirking that responsibility) even if his Abel is a little shit sometimes.
Finally, I'm working on an original novel called Blank, about a mage with DID (and her fox-man friend) who uses her dissociation to save the world from the First Curse (the Curse of the White—the Araleuk) and a Roko's basilisk-type entity from the Yawning Abyss that is both the cause of our suffering and the effect of our cruelty towards one another named Mhosrow, the Mother of All Abominations, Queen of the Yawning Abyss. The name Mhosrow is a proto-Indoeuropean name meaning "the Maws that Belch Forth."
I don't know how I'm able to keep it all separate, but I guess it helps that it's all happening from the same "framework" in a pataphysical sense. Somehow. In my head. It just works. I can't pretend to understand why. XD

XD

OMG I just hit another major milestone in my adaptation of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar for the FFXIV universe: Julỹs Kaĩsar by Liam Meri'a Morvelet.
It's Marq Ant'wyns' famous speech:
Friends, Allagans, countrymen, lend me your ears.
I come to bury Kaĩsar, not to praise him.
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interrèd with their bones.
So let it be with Kaĩsar. The noble Brwtus
Hath told you Kaĩsar was ambitious.
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath Kaĩsar answered it.
Here, under leave of Brwtus and the rest
(For Brwtus is an honorable man;
So are they all, all honorable men),
Come I to speak in Kaĩsar's funeral.
He was my friend, faithful and just to me,
But Brwtus says he was ambitious,
And Brwtus is an honorable man.
He hath brought many captives home to Allag,
Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill.
Did this in Kaĩsar seem ambitious?
When that the poor have cried, Kaĩsar hath wept;
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.
Yet Brwtus says he was ambitious,
And Brwtus is an honorable man.
You all did see that on the Drunken Feast
I thrice presented him epaulets,
Which he did thrice refuse. Was this ambition?
Yet Brwtus says he was ambitious,
And sure he is an honorable man.
I speak not to disprove what Brwtus spoke,
But here I am to speak what I do know.
You all did love him once, not without cause.
What cause withholds you, then, to mourn for him?—
O judgment, thou art fled to vile beastkin,
And men have lost their reason!—Bear with me;
My heart is in the coffin there with Kaĩsar,
And I must pause till it come back to me.#FFXIV #Shakespeare #JuliusCaesar #Allag #BardRP #JulỹsKaĩsar #Eorzea #AllaganEmpire #CreativeWriting #FFXIVWrite

#FFXIVWrite starts again on September 1!
Every day in September, the organizer will post a one-word prompt on their Tumblr and Twitter and people will have 24 hours to write something -- anything! -- in response to that prompt. It's a great way to shut up your inner perfectionist and just write.
If no one else is doing it, I could post their prompts here on Fedi? If anyone's interested?

I volunteered to do a participation prize this year for #ffxivwrite and had the honour of drawing duskwightdancer's Gwen. Thank you for sharing her story with me and congrats!

#FFXIVwrite day 8 prompt was "shed", and I was in a rush so wrote more cute Hades/Hythlodaeus. No spoilers, except that it's those characters. Rated T.
-
Okay, for day 7 of #FFXIVwrite, I gave Urianger/Thancred a shot. Rated T, bantery, no spoilers but generally imagined being sometime after ShB.
-
Aaand day six of #FFXIVwrite. For today's prompt, "ring", an angsty introspective Emet-Selch POV (with Emet-Selch/Hythlodaeus strongly implied):
-
Day five of #FFXIVwrite, some more Hades/Hythlodaeus: what if Hythlodaeus really disliked the idea of Pandaemonium? Rated G.
-
CW: Endwalker spoilers in fic summary
And day four of #FFXIVwrite: a ficlet set after the events in Elpis and before the Final Days. Hades/Hythlodaeus, rated G.
-
I wrote for the third prompt of #FFXIVwrite... it's not *quite* about my WoL (something icks me out about writing fic for that), but it's adjacent. G'raha Tia and Y'shtola have a little conversation about Raha's feelings:
-
Second story for #FFXIVwrite: Emmanellain/Sicard, rated T.
