  1. I compiled an eggdrop IRC bot yesterday and set it up in a botnet with another friend.
We're trying to revive our old channel. 😊

Well it has actually never been totally empty, one or two persons have been there for all these ~30 years. 👀

  4. Just watched this video on the early days of . It brought back a lot of memories of all the hours I spent there back in the 90s. I even learned some stuff about why it was called the and things like that. I met my wife there back in 1995, so those were important years for me. I know it just isn't the same these days, but understand what they're talking about there at the end.

  9. @Em0nM4stodon As a user from well back in the day, pre-1990...this space reminds me a great deal of the original EFNet/NSFNet/ARPANet I used to inhabit when I was in college, prior to The September That Never Ended (if anyone picks up on that reference).

The users came from a mostly academic or research-forward corporate background; the powers that be in the corporate world mostly had no conception of what the Internet was, and once they discovered it, still didn't have a real idea how it worked, as it was antithetical to the ethos of capitalism. Thus, the user base exhibited traits associated with enthusiastic engineers and academics: braininess, neophilia, curiosity, imagination. Being geeky and different was celebrated and encouraged. The same mentality you might find at an SF convention, art gallery, museum, or junior/local theater project. Communities were intentional, and there was a sense of reciprocal rights and recognition...a celebration of our global diversity.

Of course, flamewars there were...but overall, there was a nurturing of positive growth within the space.

Ancient history, of course. I am wondering if there is a self-regulation that's involved. When I describe the Fediverse to others, even friends whom I consider intelligent, there seems to be a lack of exact comprehension about what it is I'm talking about. (And among my age cohort, there's also a fatigue with social media in general, which I think is partly a function of age, and partly an accrual of bad experiences on Facebook and other corporatized media.)

When I started my phpBB forum as a general online space, I found the "culture" of such forums to be *radically* different. I described it as the "what's your favorite donut" mentality - everything was facile and superficial, like the scene in the kitchen at an awkward party. It just never took off and I don't have any idea why. (Several people close to me have encouraged me not to delete the forums; if you wish to go there, see my profile and pinned post for the address and registration code.)

  10. @ian Damn right. Though I hope they don't start having votes on it :)

We went through decades of this with #IRC, when #Eris forked off the main universe, to create #EFNet, then the major forks of #Undernet, #Dalnet and #IRCNet - I suppose the big difference here is that different servers can allow different functionality within the same galaxy.

We just need to bring back #SixDegrees and the only change we need to make on it, is to make sure that the only post editor is #TECO

  11. @SheDrivesMobility linkedin ist wie frueher im #IRC, wenn du vom #efnet ins #dalnet wechseln "musstest" und ploetzlich alles kras bunt und bold face.

  12. If you think about it #allowlist #federation is basically what #IRC networks do nowadays (it used to be similar to #email where everyone is connected to one another, until the inevitable permanent #eris #netsplit that led to #EFnet which provided precedent for future netsplits) :sagume_think:

  13. Mistodon: the #Blender improvised computer art competition was not solely an ANSI art competition, but invited submissions in all styles and mediums. For example, this is a high resolution illustration by Essential Obscenity of Dark Illustrated that won Blender #7 in early 1997, depicting (ACiD founder) #RaDMaN / stripping / at McDonald's.

We are running a Blender this weekend out of channel #Blender on the #EFNet #IRC. We would like for you to play! If you would like more information about how it is played, please visit mistigris.org/blender/blend.ht, and for a countdown to game time you can check lazarusblocks.com/blender/

  14. to “quarantine” themselves away from eris by disconnecting from any subset of the IRC network as soon as they saw eris there
Wait isn't that like how #fediblock acts when they see someone interacting with @[email protected] :kokoro_lmao:

  15. there are still people hanging out in the #efnet #robotolabs #irc channel 20 years after the group disappeared. irc is freaking for real.

  16. This drama reminds me of the first #IRC network that actually didn't have a name as it was just systems federated together in a joint chat network prior to 1990.

There was a server eris.berkeley.edu that was probably run by anarchists at UC #Berkeley and allowed any server to join it.

In order to contain eris.berkeley.edu #EFnet was founded in 1990 that quarantined eris.berkeley.edu from EFnet.

  17. It’s funny, I guess I’m at the right age to remember that we’ve had these conversations about #federation and #meta in the past.

Back then it was “the networks” (NPL and ARPA) on who to peer with but I think this was best realized with #IRC. #EFnet and its evolution are not unlike the federation considerations we face now.

Smaller instances are the best bet we have now.

  18. Mistodon: Hennifer and Warpus of Lazarus Blocks first established the Blender improvised computer art competition back in 1996 and here they both are representing in its 8th installment circa early 1997, in this #ANSIart interpretation of the words #penguin / smoking / China. (Rude little birds, but I guess that's why they're called fowl!)

We are running a Blender compo this weekend -- tomorrow! -- on the #EFNet #IRC and would like to invite you to come along for the ride! You can find details at mistigris.org/blender/blend.ht and the official countdown ticker at lazarusblocks.com/blender

  19. Mistodon: this surreal #ANSIart screen of a BEAN / RUNNING / at CANADA'S WONDERLAND was created way back in 1996 by Raider of Opx for the fifth installment (which it won) of the Blender improvised computer art competition, where artists attempt to make new creations based on unexpected prompts.

We revived the Blender compo in 2015, and are hosting another one this weekend, based out of channel #blender on the #EFNet #IRC. Details at mistigris.org/blender/blend.ht

  20. Mistodon: from the 3rd #Blender improvised art competition held way back in 1996, here its winning entry, an #ANSIart illustration by Armageddon Donut of Eclipse of a CUTE LITTLE GIRL / SMILING / at the BEACH. (How wholesome!)

The goal of the Blender is to tap all three of the assigned topics in making a work of #ComputerArt -- visual, literary, musical or otherwise. We are hosting another Blender compo (we revived the series in 2015 and are currently running them quarterly) this weekend, based out of #blender on the #EFNet #IRC!

If you'd like further information about how to participate, please refer to mistigris.org/blender/blend.ht

  21. Mistodon: from 27 years back, here's an #ANSIart illustration from the very first Blender improvised #ComputerArt competition, a demonstration by GrindKing of Lazarus Blocks making excellent use of the spontaneous assigned topics "oral", "worms" and "bounce". (These specific bouncy worms are demonstrating excellent oral hygiene here.)

These days we run Blenders on a quarterly basis, and the next one is coming up this weekend, Jan 21-22. The competition nominally takes place in channel #blender on the #EFNet #IRC, but anywhere you can find the topics is valid and any way you have of sending submissions in to us is also good. (If it helps, there is an IRC bridge set up on the 16colo.rs Discord.) Entries don't have to be ANSI art or even visual in nature!

For further details... possibly too many... please consult mistigris.org/blender/blend.ht

  22. CW: meta, long

    @erincandescent @dl
In some sense, the #Fediverse has already had its #EFNet moment with Gab. Still, with the massive growth it's experiencing now, and will probably experience in the future, the threat model associated with “too lax onboarding” (so to say) is real.

That being said, I'm more worried about instances getting too large to be properly moderated than by the “federate by default”.

  23. Alright, time to try out this Mastodon thing. If it doesn't work out, I'm -this- close to just creating an IRC channel on #efnet or something.

  24. Just checked in on #efnet #irc, things aren't looking good.

  25. 19:25 -!- saper [[email protected]:eris.Berkeley.EDU] has quit [Killed (EFduck (#eris.Berkeley.edu))]

    so, that was it, guys?

  26. 1. Folks at #EFNet/#bsdports told me that I should use #Poudriere instead of #porttools for testing.

    2. The patch for misc/sent has just been approved by the maintainer! Hooray! bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show

  27. Folks at #bsdports on #EFNet told me that my patches should go to #FreeBSD #Bugzilla. #Phabricator is used by the #ports committers for special occasions to speed up certain workflows.

  28. I thought to myself the other day, I haven't really been on #IRC in a long time. So I hopped on #EFNet and #DALNet to see what there was to see.

    Ghost towns.

I spent so many hours on IRC back in the late 90’s/early 00's.
