Allowlisting: Exception Handling for Blocked TLDs
In this article, we discuss how to deal with blocklisting exception cases by using selective allowlisting to complement generalized blocklisting as part of an incident response.

🚨Breaking news! Let's Encrypt is *almost* ready to issue IP address certificates—just not to you. 😂 Expect 6-day certificates under an exclusive 'allowlist' that you can't access yet. But don't worry, they'll keep doing "more work" with the urgency of a sloth in a hammock. 🙄💤

As it is the Fedi is (still) actively hostile to women and BIPOC. Good people leave because harassment and block evasion are too easy and moderation insufficient on most large servers or nonexistent in small ones.
Maybe a large number of better moderated servers should switch to an allowlist model and better reply controls (on who gets to reply to posts). On top of that, using shared blocklists if some of the allowed servers misbehave.
It will break the fediverse as we know it, but that's not a bad thing as it's already broken by abusers. Most large instances will likely not be on allowlists as they're geared from growth, not community safety.

If you think about it #allowlist #federation is basically what #IRC networks do nowadays (it used to be similar to #email where everyone is connected to one another, until the inevitable permanent #eris #netsplit that led to #EFnet which provided precedent for future netsplits) :sagume_think:

@[email protected] They probably just imported the list of all domains their main instance at
fedi.taxhas federated with. Pretty nice way to bootstrap an #allowlist instance tbh :sagume_think:
I'm kinda lucky my instance got included actually :gyate_patchouli_wow:

Oooh somebody is actually doing an #allowlist / #optin #federation here in the #fediverse! :SuikaWOW:
Very cool @[email protected] :D :alice_wine:

You never had the choice from the beginning. #Mastodon started with #OStatus and you already got the "weirdos" who don't follow "Mastodon etiquette" and format that are from #GNUsocial, #Friendica, #Hubzilla, etc.
#Pleroma soon joined, and then #Misskey started federating too... Rest is history. :seija_coffee:
The #fediverse was always #optout. And the documentation even strongly discourages making it #optin (i.e. #allowlist #federation)!

Just merged #allowlist federation mode into main! There's no UI for it yet, but the client API + internal code is all there to make it work :)

PC Matic Home blocks the execution of any program not on its allowlist, but you'll have to put up with it blocking valid programs too.

CyberLock takes an allowlist approach to antivirus protection without getting in your way. A machine-learning component improves the app's malware detection, but you still need a standalone antivirus.

#meta #whatsapp is having issues with spam. I get tons of unsolicited nudges trying clever tricks to fool #ai based #antispam filtering.
If they don't implement #allowlist style blanket blocking option, I'll have to ditch it.
This is very annoying. As far as i passionately hate #meta, #whatsapp is more popular than #SMS text messaging and kinda mandatory to have.

#Email #deliverability once again. One organization just informed me that, they'll be only accepting email ( #SMTP connections) from their self managed #IPv4 #allowlist. - Please let us know, which servers are sending mail to us and why. -
@david_megginson Yes, I'm working on it, too.
Got called out at work by a colleague for whitelist instead of #AllowList
I'm better than I was, and not where I want to be.

Of course #aws features are going to be coming fast and furious in the run up to #ReInvent but another neat #CloudSecurity feature for #CloudFront is
hashing of the TLS Client Hello packet to create the JA3 #fingerprint.Allows you to create a #BlockList (or #AllowList if you're lucky enough) of #BadActors in your #WAF (or just to log for anomalies)
