2023 Spain Ltd. Edition reissueA phenomenal note-perfect songwriting masterpiece for a fine Saturday afternoon.
It baffles my mind that this album was only a commercial success in the Netherlands when it came out in ‘71.
Sure.
NOW it’s recognized as the stroke of genius that it is, but how could have people missed it back then?More than anything else, White Light shows that Clark was the true heartbeat of The Byrds.
The lyrics are poetry, the music absolutely sublime. Incredible countrified melodies. Just amazing on all fronts.Listen to his take on “Tears Of Rage” and tell me his isn’t the best version.
I dare you.

My fav from Jesse Colin Young is released on April 20, 1974. It's his fifth solo album (The Youngbloods) and ended up his highest-charting solo album. After Song For Juli, Jesse leaned into a more experimental, jazzy folk album. Just a stray thought to piggyback off of my last Gram Parsons post.
I realize how many artists have covered “Love Hurts”, but the best version clearly belongs to Gram Parsons (and Emmylou).
The version on Grievous Angel has that stripped-down, aching country feel that really fits the lyrics of that song.
It’s far less polished than say…the Nazareth version, but way more intimate sounding.
Gram Parsons had a way of making heartbreak sound… almost noble.

I listened to the first album by Lavender Country, the groundbreaking gay country band whose debut came in '73, and I liked it so much that I'm listening to their second album from like 40 years later which surprisingly sounds pretty similar despite the gap and is also good so far.
