  18. One more thing from my Tom Petty listening adventure (I did After Dark from 82, Let Me Up from 87 and Hypnotic Eye from '14) - in another life, I was a producer. Let Me Up is a fantastic record, and Tom had help with Bob writing one of the three singles, 'Jammin Me', but the 3 they chose for the singles, NONE of them are as good as the record's 9th track, 'Ain't Love Strange', which I (or anyone else who hadn't heard this record) would've missed - but it's gotta be one of Tom's best songs. Fuckin unreal.

Here. Listen to THIS shit. And then listen to all of 'Let Me Up (I've Had Enough)': youtu.be/NXysGNwC0w4

  20. Just listened to Tom Petty's 'After Dark' (from 1982) fully for the first time, (I of course knew the song 'You Got Lucky') - but I get to the end, and the last song, 'A Wasted Life' had this melody that I couldn't place.. until I did. It's like, the EXACT same melody (and even NOTES, I just listened to them one after the other) as Vanity Faire's single 'Hitchin' a Ride' from 1969.

Through the years, Tom had different issues here and there with suing others for similar songs (Sam Smith) or not (the Chili Peppers) - and I loved the guy and his music (RIP), but man, Tom, 'A Wasted Life' is like, a DIRECT rip from 'Hitchin' a Ride'. 😂

  21. TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS
    Southern Accents
    1985 Canada pressing

The one Petty record I’ve continued to come back to repeatedly, over and over. It is hands down my favorite, which is saying something, because there’s a handful of Petty albums that I would deem perfect.

None of them however have ever affected me on the level of this one.

The title track might be Tom’s greatest song ever, and would definitely find its way on to MY 20 favorite songs ever list somewhere.

It’s also got my favorite Petty rocker on it in “Rebels”, as well as one of the WEIRDEST Tom songs ever in “Don’t Come Around Here No More”.

For me, Southern Accents is infinitely playable. There will never be a time where I’m not in the mood for it.

    I miss Tom so much.
Dude gave so many incredible songs to the world.
