  3. Just a stray thought to piggyback off of my last Gram Parsons post.

I realize how many artists have covered “Love Hurts”, but the best version clearly belongs to Gram Parsons (and Emmylou).

The version on Grievous Angel has that stripped-down, aching country feel that really fits the lyrics of that song.

It’s far less polished than say…the Nazareth version, but way more intimate sounding.

Gram Parsons had a way of making heartbreak sound… almost noble.

  4. Grievous Angel

January 13, 1974 ~ Gram's critically acclaimed album is released 4 months after his death. Bernie Leadon, Linda Ronstadt and, of course, EmmyLou Harris appear. It's #425 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. 7. GRAM PARSONS
    GP
    1973 Canada pressing

An album that is of great comfort to me, and one that is a regular go-to when Fall starts to reveal itself.

For years, my band would do these random acoustic-centric shows at house parties, and a regular staple of those sets was “We'll Sweep Out The Ashes In The Morning”, just a gorgeous song, written by Joyce Allsup.

This was the only album (Parsons’ first) that was ever released while he was alive. It’s almost embarrassing how beautiful AND gut wrenching Parsons’ voice is on every song. Add the Southern angelic qualities of Emmylou Harris on top of that, and you’ve got a sublime experience.

A record I will never tire of no matter how many times I hear it.
They really don’t make them like this anymore.

  9. Released this day in 1968. The touch stone of Country Rock and the instrument that introduced Gram Parsons to the world. Though Parsons had left the group by the time the album was released his fingerprints are all over it.

Originally McGuinn's vision was for a "history of american music" Parsons passion for country rock pressured McGuinn that a country album would be the direction. Even going further that the album should be recorded in Nashville as Dylan had done with "Blond on Blond". When the Byrd's producer Gary Usher agreed they should go to Nashville McGuinn was convinced. On March 9, 1968, the band decamped to Columbia's recording facility in Nashville, with Clarence White in tow, to begin recording sessions for "Sweetheart of the Rodeo".

A commercial flop when released, today the album is revered as a cornerstone of Country Rock music and the launching pad for Gram Parsons.

  11. Cover I did a few years ago of an old George Jones/Gene Pitney country tune, by way of Gram and Emmylou. Video features our dear, departed dog and more of the weird faces I make when I sing.

Legit licensed cover available on my Faircamp!

  12. I'll bet fifteen-year-old Gram Parsons was a-sitting at home watchin' this on TV and thinking: "*some day ah'm a-gonna have a band like that! Yes, sir!*".
