  1. Scruffy says hello. He's in a sassy mood today and enjoying the walnuts.

    #CityBirds
  2. Rolfie popped in today. Was proper hungry, so guess we better go shopping and restock the walnut supplies.

Got a chance to pull out the 100-500mm lens. It's not a macro lens, but still pretty handy for getting in close.

  3. It's getting pretty clear the Scruffy is suffering from Psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD). It's slowly getting worse. Can see his tummy is going bald now, and his facial plumage is getting thin.

    :(

  4. This happened yesterday and I wished I still carried my camera with me everywhere.. It's just not very practical for work..

as always the intersection of wildlife and citylife is super interesting and a city bird is almost always worth saying hi to

  5. Double dipping today. Scruffy already got treats this morning, but just dropped by for a little afternoon indulgence.

I wonder what he does with the rest of his day?

  6. A Red-tailed Hawk landed in front of us as we were walking in Forest Park and gave us a stern look as if to warn us not to pass. We continued on our path without incident.

  7. Another One Bites the Crust

Meet London’s most successful entrepreneur. This seagull has cornered the market on prime real estate with a view. Perched on the Millennium Bridge like it owns the place, this feathered opportunist represents everything brilliant about urban wildlife adaptation. While Freddie Mercury sang about another one biting the dust, this gull’s motto is clearly “another one bites the crust”, and judging by its confident posture, business is booming.

From this vantage point, our avian overlord can survey the entire pedestrian buffet streaming across the bridge below. Dropped sandwiches, abandoned chips, and tourist snacks are all fair game in the urban food chain. Those gleaming towers in the background might house London’s financial elite, but this bird has figured out a more direct route to success: position yourself where the food comes to you.

  8. And we had a special guest join us for brekky too. Marvellous.

  9. Just got home in time for this bundle of feathers to stop by for a quick chat.

She was getting an earful from Rolfie when I left this morning. And the correllas just headed off after trying to dig out a hole in the rear side of the pebble-mix tower at 303 Collins St.

  14. Earlier today we had a show down between Rolfie (one of our regular sulphur crested cockies) and a pair of Long-billed Corellas. But the corellas came back soon after!

Each year they arrive in spring and investigate various parts of the nearby buildings for possible nesting spots. Such is the challenge for city birds. Most will end up tearing into a palm tree or getting booted out by a Rainbow Lorikeet. It's a tough gig for a parrot in Melbourne.

  19. It’s a bird city

Cork City, where birds have become incredibly adept at turning human carelessness into dining opportunities.

Urban-adapted birds like the seagulls and crows photographed here have developed significantly different behaviours compared to their rural counterparts. City-dwelling seagulls often show reduced fear responses to humans and have learned to time their foraging around peak human activity periods, such as lunch hours when dropped food is most available.

Crows, meanwhile, have demonstrated remarkable problem-solving abilities in urban environments and can even learn to associate specific locations with regular food sources. Studies have shown that urban bird populations often have different dietary compositions, stress hormone levels, and even song patterns compared to rural birds, reflecting their adaptation to city life and the constant presence of human activity.

  24. Trouble in paradise. Scruffy and Rolfie have had a falling out and they don't seem to get along anymore.

Rolfie chases off Scruffy sometimes. Very dramatic stuff. Scruffy came in for a snack but froze solid when Rolfie turned up.

  25. It's so bizarre to have these glimpses of nature just come and land on your balcony.

Like a little reminder that nature is still around us. Still with us. Still a part of us. We're so lucky to have these brief moments of connection. They make all the difference.

How is it that a wild bird can make us feel more human? What does that tell us?

  26. Just got home to find a very cranky cockatoo waiting for a treat. She missed out this morning. Fair is fair.

  27. Early arrivals this morning. They love to zoom all the pigeons and scare the bollocks out of them.

    We are friends.

  28. European Starling that was foraging with a few of its buddies near a playground in Amersfoort we saw on our walk through the center.

  29. One of the regular Red-tailed Hawks from the cemetery down the street. I am almost guaranteed to see a raptor of some sort when going there, and I am there almost daily.

  30. The floof balls popped up again today. But this time super quiet, just sneaking onto the balcony and softly chirping out hello. They left just before the sun popped out.

I already had my airport bag packed with cameras right next to the arm chair, so had a few cameras to choose from this morning.
