  1. Fixing the fishing line

Sometimes the fishing line gets tangled and you need to stop what you're doing and fix it.

  2. The last of the light in the wheelhouse

  3. The last of the light in the wheelhouse

The sun went down beyond the far side of Ballycotton Harbour and everything on the pier turned to an outline. The wheelhouse windows kept some of the light, so the boat is a black shape with orange panes punched through it. You lose the paint and the rust and the name on the bow at this stage of the evening, and what is left is the ironmongery: the aerial, the radar, the railing, an anchor, perhaps.

  4. Blarney Castle at sunset

I shot straight into the sun, so Blarney Castle came out as a flat black shape with nothing left but the outline. Two birds had claimed some of the highest points while all the humans had gone home for the day. It was a lovely evening. Perfect time for silhouettes....

Seven anglers had the end of Ballycotton pier to themselves, rods out over the water, while the sun went down behind the far shore. I was there for the sunset and happy to photograph the fishermen looking for fish....

  13. Last Light at Ballycotton

The three of them had the pier to themselves, rods out over water that had gone completely flat. I was there with Blarney Photography Club, and sunset is always an attraction there. It had already happened somewhere behind the headland, leaving a band of yellow along the horizon and nothing else lit. Not one of them turned to look at it. They watched the water instead, which is important if you have come to catch something.

The thrush was sitting on a branch in a cherry tree in the grounds of Blarney Castle late in the evening, and it stayed put long enough for a few frames. The next photo is a blur as the bird looked the other way, and the following photo is of a bare branch. The thrush had flown away.

  19. Bumblebee on a cardoon

The cardoons in Blarney Castle Gardens have been left to flower, which is what you do if you want bees rather than dinner. This one was about the size of my fist, and the bumblebee had worked its way into the lower edge of it, half buried in the purple. I shot it zoomed in, so only a few centimetres of the florets is sharp and everything behind falls off to green. Some of the heads either side had already browned off and gone to seed, but the bees were busy feeding off the remaining ones.

  20. Casting Off the Pier

  22. Evening Sails at Kinsale

  23. Evening Sails at Kinsale

A grey evening in Kinsale, with a fleet of small boats out on the harbour for what looked like club racing. Most of them carried red sails, Squibs I think, a class Kinsale Yacht Club is well known for, with a few white ones mixed in. The water was almost flat, and the crews sat low and quiet as they worked their way across it. Behind them, the wooded shoreline climbed up to fields and houses on the hill, and a single dark-hulled yacht sat moored off to the side, sails down for the night.

Ballycotton harbour late on a summer evening is one of those places that is rewarding to visit. The working boats had all come in, Atlantic Chief, Excelsior and Prolific were rafted tight against the wall, hulls bobbing in calm waters. The setting sun cast long, side-on shadows and clouds streaked across the sky.

Getting a shot like this is half luck and half persistence. You have to wait until the incoming tide is about to retreat to take the photo. This one was at Kilfarrasy Beach in Co. Waterford in 2017. Blarney Photography Club was visiting the area and this was on the itinerary for the the evening shoot. It was a very dull evening, but we made the most of it.
