  1. Cardoon wins ‘Best Mediterranean Restaurant on Long Island’ (Includes interview)

Cardoon bested some stiff competition from multiple deserving Mediterranean restaurants that are located in Nassau and Suffolk County. This marked Cardoon’s second “…

  2. CW: Food - lamb and cardoon

Tonight is a lamb and cardoon tagine. I grew cardoon (related to artichoke but you use the stems) specifically to make this dish. Now just simmering it to reduce the liquid

  3. Starting today I'm swapping feverfew for a combination of cardoon leaf and ginger root extract - Integrative Therapeutics Motility Activator. The feverfew was for migraine; it was doing a reasonable job of reducing migraine attack frequency, severity, and duration.

However, I noticed a drop in mood and increase in constipation, the latter already being pretty bad. Parthenolide, one of the constituents of feverfew, is a serotonin antagonist.

Ginger is used for both migraine prevention and increasing upper GI motility.

Cardoon helps with lower GI motility, which is my main problem. I've tried homemade cardoon leaf tea and it does seem to get things going. Unfortunately my cardoon plant isn't doing too well - I can't seem to keep the aphids off of it. Using a supplement is more convenient; I don't think I could harvest enough from my cardoon plant anyway.

Here's hoping I can both reduce my migraines and constipation.

    * Some sources seem to confuse artichoke with cardoon. Artichoke is Cynara scolymus; cardoon is Cynara cardunculus.

  4. More mementos from the garden, this time a June bug (Cotinis nitida) on my cardoon and a Carniolan honey bee (Apis mellifera carnica) on oregano. All below shot using a full-frame prime Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM at various apertures between f/2-3.5.

  5. Some mementos from the garden today. Who said one can't do detail photography with an ultra-wide lens? All below shot handheld, using an ultra-wide full-frame prime (Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM) at fully open aperture.

  6. From a 50p packet of seeds came this wonderful #cardoon. It's surrounded by bronze fennel in my edible front garden project, edged with golden marjoram, chives and there are blackcurrants in there too. Fab leaves and pollinators love it.

  7. More cardoon! It's early evening and the bees are buzzin'. I love sitting here in my chair watching them work. It's pretty cute actually, I don't know what I pictured them doing but it wasn't this: they fly into the purple fronds at speed and then roll around like they're showing off their moves. I'm only assuming they're doing bee work, it's entirely possibly this cardoon has become the world's first Bee Disco. Which I fully support btw.

  8. Here's a video I took of the ginormous ~9ft cardoon in housemate's garden. The thing is just massive, I watch people stand on the sidewalk and point it out to their companions, their mouths open. The visible part here is maybe a fifth of the actual plant. It's filled with bees today, which makes me so happy, you can see them zipping all around. :)
