As I was passing this tree, I heard an odd sound that made me stop and try to identify what it was. I finally saw a red squirrel tucked in next to a tree trunk, gnawing on what I'm guessing is a horse chestnut? It was the gnawing sound that drew my attention. :)

A joy of #walktober is the number of foxes I see when I'm doing these urban evening walks - autumn is when a young #fox leaves the den and finds their own homes.
Alas, the darker evenings means I often get rather blurry photos, but sometimes blur can tell a good story – like these two foxes chasing each other around a churchyard, or one of them framed by the tree and the light.

The visitor

I hang up a bird feeder in the winter, and that of course attracts squirrels too. This spring there was one particular squirrel who came for food -- and, when something bad happened to her left forepaw, for whatever extra help the humans could give. What looked like a bad infection healed well, but she lost 1 or 2 knuckles of one finger. So now my family calls her Froda.

We have a 2nd floor deck. It's a good place to sit outside. We let the cats onto the deck so they can get outside without worrying about cars.

Today, one of the cats brought his new friend inside. Yep -- Froda the squirrel.

Froda went back out with minimal fuss, but now I'm worried about what comes next. I don't want an indoor squirrel-- not even one that just comes to visit. Not all the cats are as mellow as the one who helped her in today. And, of course, I worry about rabies. The cats are vaccinated but the humans aren't. But I don't want to stop giving the occasional pecan to a neighbor.

So -- if we put up a squirrel shelter on a nearby tree, will that help with "you have your place and we have ours"? Even if it helps with "Jen, stop thinking you need to do more to help this squirrel" without making things worse, it would be a win.

If it matters, this is in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, USA.
