Bishop Lucey’s Pigeon

If there’s one thing that was a constant in the old Bishop Lucey Park in Cork it was the pigeons. They swarmed over the old city wall where humans were denied because of a fence around it. Sometimes the wall was thick with them, waiting for a child to come along and scream and laugh at them as they flew into the air in panic.

It’s a bird city

Cork City, where birds have become incredibly adept at turning human carelessness into dining opportunities.

Urban-adapted birds like the seagulls and crows photographed here have developed significantly different behaviours compared to their rural counterparts. City-dwelling seagulls often show reduced fear responses to humans and have learned to time their foraging around peak human activity periods, such as lunch hours when dropped food is most available.

Crows, meanwhile, have demonstrated remarkable problem-solving abilities in urban environments and can even learn to associate specific locations with regular food sources. Studies have shown that urban bird populations often have different dietary compositions, stress hormone levels, and even song patterns compared to rural birds, reflecting their adaptation to city life and the constant presence of human activity.

Back in the days of tweets there was a researcher looking to track data on parrots around Australia suffering from psittacine infection.

I can't seem to find them by Googling. Any birder folks out there remember who it was? Two of the birds visiting our balcony are showing early signs of the disease :(

The floof balls popped up again today. But this time super quiet, just sneaking onto the balcony and softly chirping out hello. They left just before the sun popped out.

I already had my airport bag packed with cameras right next to the arm chair, so had a few cameras to choose from this morning.

For those who are interested, these were taken on a LUMIX S9 with the 18mm F1.8 lens. Shot at F2, and I've lifted the shadow detail from the original exposure. As is my usual style.

Just lucky with the light this morning. Just one of those moments where the magic happens and all you gotta do is hit the shutter.
