First Light at Cappagh
Cappagh Beach at half-six in the morning is colder than I'd planned for. We'd driven down to Kerry the night before and I was up in the dark, heading out the door and shared the journey from Dingle with Freddie at the wheel. I forgot my wellies, but while I cursed my lack of preparation, I didn't miss them at all once I got there. Then I got down onto the sand and the sky decided to put on a show. A single pink contrail (or maybe a ribbon of high cloud, I genuinely couldn't tell) drew a […] -

Lá Fhéile Pádraig in Fire and Light
We were standing across from Cobh in the park on Haulbowline Island to photograph the fireworks display over Cobh on St. Patrick's Day this year. With a camera on a tripod, timing a fireworks display is basically an exercise in optimistic guesswork. When I see the firework launch, I press the shutter button, hope a burst lands in frame, and try not to jostle the camera and tripod as the photo is taken. Sometimes if the burst is impressive I'll forget to take my finger off the shutter button […]https://inphotos.org/2026/04/18/la-fheile-padraig-in-fire-and-light/

Where the Dingle Coast Meets the Swell
Clogher Beach in early March is not what you'd call hospitable. This little cove on the Dingle Peninsula opens straight onto the Atlantic, and the swell hits the slate head-on; the spray goes up twice as high as the wave itself. I was there with Blarney Photography Club, all of us strung out along the beach in heavy coats, pretending we weren't freezing. I kept the shutter short enough to freeze the break but long enough to let the water show some texture and pulled the exposure down a touch […]https://inphotos.org/2026/04/17/where-the-dingle-coast-meets-the-swell/

Gold on the Mountain at Gougane Barra
The cloud had been sitting on the mountains all morning like a hat pulled down over its eyes, and then for about fifteen minutes the sun broke through low and side-on and set the entire rock face above Gougane Barra on fire. The golds and ambers were almost absurd. It was the kind of light you'd dial back in post because nobody would believe it was real. Mist was still threading through the peaks, which gave the valley that layered depth you only get when the weather can't make up its mind. There was a single boat on our little corner of the Lakes of Killarney. I'd walked down from O'Sullivan's Cascade to join other photographers from Blarney Photography Club. They were busy photographing the same scene you see here and everything around them. Waiting for the Light
Nothing sorts the casual photographers from the committed ones quite like an early morning alarm on a Kerry beach in March. This lot from Blarney Photography Club were out on Cappagh Strand before first light, tripods planted in the wet sand, hoods up, waiting for whatever the sky decided to offer.
The long exposure in the first shot turned them into ghosts which felt fitting, given how they were all standing perfectly still and barely speaking, the universal code of photographers who haven’t had coffee yet. By the time the clouds broke and the pink started to creep in, they’d fanned out along the rocks, each one finding their own angle on the same stretch of coastline. It’s a funny thing, watching people who spend their time making images become the image themselves.

Silhouette at the Harbour Mouth
There’s a narrow window just after sunset when the sky goes absolutely wild, when the sun has dropped below the horizon but the light is still bouncing around in the atmosphere, and you get these incredible bands of colour stacking up from warm orange through pink into deep purple and navy.
The navigation beacon at the end of the pier in Ballycotton hadn’t come on yet so it provided a subject for a silhouette against this gorgeous sky on a lovely August evening last year.

Killarney’s Crystal Water
Last October when Blarney Photography Club visited Killarney to photograph the rutting season this year, we took a break from the deer and some of us went to O’Sullivan’s Cascade. This is the Lakes of Killarney as seen from where that waterfall flows into the lake.
It was a beautiful clear day. The sky might have been a little boring for photography but I loved what I saw there. Especially when I saw how the sunlight caught a rock in the water. The hills in the background disappear into the distance like a painting. Quite a remarkable day.

Screebe Fishing Hut at Sunset
My first time visiting the famous fishing hut at Screebe in Connemara was last night, when we were blessed with an evening without even a breeze to disturb the water.
Unfortunately, there was an excess of low cloud, with a cloud bank at the horizon that swallowed the sun at the horizon behind the house, but by moving around we caught a break and saw a lovely yellow glow in the distance.

A Killarney Stag’s Portrait
We were lucky to spot this stag and a number of hinds as we entered Killarney National Park a few weeks ago. The light was terrible. It was just after sunrise and we were walking through a wood. I’m thrilled with this photo of a magnificent stag.
Here’s another photo of this stag.

The Tiered Beauty of O’Sullivan’s Cascade
One of the highlights of a recent trip to Killarney was discovering O’Sullivan’s Cascade. There’s a 1.7 km walk from your car to the falls, but it’s worth it as the area is lovely.

Kinsale’s Waterfront Serenity
If you’ve ever been to Kinsale in Co Cork, you’ll immediately recognise the house and tree in the picture above. If you go back in my archives you’ll probably find a photo of it from another angle, but it’s so nice I thought I should take another photo. 🙂
TIL that style of large, spreading tree you see dominating this Kinsale scene is likely a Cedar of Lebanon (Cedrus libani), which became incredibly fashionable to plant on Irish estates during the Georgian and Victorian periods. These trees were imported from the eastern Mediterranean and became status symbols for wealthy landowners. Having a mature Cedar of Lebanon on your property basically announced “we’ve been here long enough to grow something this impressive.” They can live for over 1,000 years and develop those distinctive horizontal, layered branches that make them instantly recognisable. The tree in this photograph is probably 150-200 years old based on its size and shape, meaning it was likely planted sometime in the early to mid-1800s when Kinsale was thriving as a fishing port and naval base. So that tree has essentially witnessed the entire modern history of the town!

When Art Meets Daily Life on Sullivan’s Quay
I love the murals around Cork City, and the mural on Sullivan’s Quay is particularly eye-catching. Ordinary life continues on, but at least we’re treated to the gorgeous colours whenever we pass by.

Where Water Meets Light
The sun had set behind the distant hills and the exposure times went up when I took this photo, but that’s what I wanted as the sea was rough and I wanted to make it silky smooth and misty at Owenahincha Beach last August.

When Recycling Gets Serious
This small garden caught my eye. It would be a nice space if not for the obligatory bins that every household must have. The left wall is a lovely deep blue, matching the colours of the flowers there.

Carey’s Lane After Dark
I was out with Blarney Photography Club during the summer and one member of the club kneeled to photograph Carey’s Lane. I went high and lifted my camera over my head to get it from a different perspective!
Carey’s Lane is one of Cork’s oldest medieval streets, originally part of the walled city that dates back to the 12th century. The narrow width and cobblestone surface are remnants of medieval urban planning, designed for foot traffic and horse-drawn carts. The modern drainage channel follows the same path that medieval gutters would have taken, showing how some aspects of urban infrastructure remain remarkably consistent across centuries.
