  1. cool paper looking at moth diversity in New York!
The results are far from surprising (more trees and less light makes more moths), but I like how they used @inaturalist while being critical of the dataset.

  2. A cute lady #beetle for #insektenSamstag !
It's a genus I had not seen/known before, Henosepilachna. Species in this genus are phytophagous, unlike the most commonly seen lady beetles. I think they're also a bit cuter.

  5. Well, hello! 🦊 Very cute visitor in my garden yesterday! Hanging around for a bit, clawing at compost bags, scratching the soil. Then traversing neighbouring gardens before travelling on. I hope she comes back. 🦊🦊🦊 #urbanfox #urbangarden #citywildlife #foxy

  6. Saw this big moth in the U-bahn the other day. It was already weak from light-induced disorientation, and idk if it made it at all after I released it outside...
But it was quite cute. And huge. Catocala nupta.

  7. We are done with the #insects workshops until spring, so it's time to release the butterflies!
Adults were released on the last day, with the kids, but I have a bunch of pupae left. I spread them in the park next door and hopefully they will hatch soon!

  8. It’s a bird city

Cork City, where birds have become incredibly adept at turning human carelessness into dining opportunities.

Urban-adapted birds like the seagulls and crows photographed here have developed significantly different behaviours compared to their rural counterparts. City-dwelling seagulls often show reduced fear responses to humans and have learned to time their foraging around peak human activity periods, such as lunch hours when dropped food is most available.

Crows, meanwhile, have demonstrated remarkable problem-solving abilities in urban environments and can even learn to associate specific locations with regular food sources. Studies have shown that urban bird populations often have different dietary compositions, stress hormone levels, and even song patterns compared to rural birds, reflecting their adaptation to city life and the constant presence of human activity.

  9. On my way to my co-working space, I found a single piece of moth wing. I think ants were trying to fit it in their nest.
It's from a species I've never seen in the area before, and I probably won't. Thanks to the ants now, I know it's around

  11. Anyone has any ideas for some ideally non intrusive ways to prevent #crows from throwing off a water container left for #birds off of the windowsill?

  12. First time seeing a black and white squirrel in Vienna (or anywhere!).
Very cute, but I'm wondering what's happening with the squirrel population now... The dark brown squirrels were common already, but this feels new!
