A Red-tailed Hawk landed in front of us as we were walking in Forest Park and gave us a stern look as if to warn us not to pass. We continued on our path without incident.

This morning's view out my window was a group of Golden-crowned Kinglets. It is a chilly morning, just below freezing, but the bird activity around the house is the best I have seen in the last couple of weeks.

When I am working in the Catskills, I have a view out the sliding glass doors out to the deck from my computer. This often gives me a good opportunity to see birds out of the corner of my eye, which is always welcome.
Today it was a Brown Creeper with its tongue sticking out, backlit by sunlit fall leaves. My camera was not prepared, so the focus could be better, but the colors are great.

Pretty quiet on the mothing front last night. Almost full moon, clear and slightly cooler night meant less action (... or maybe more action if you saw my previous Sex Lives of a Cabbage Moth post! 😮 )

I've been reading Ben Goldfarb's excellent road ecology book Crossings. While walking back from the library with it I passed this Eastern Gartersnake who had fallen victim to a vehicle, which is absolutely a coincidence I could have done without.

As well as larger macro moths, there are thousands of micro moths, some barely perceptible to the eye. Four micros from today's moth box include:
1) yponomeuta evonymella (Bird-cherry ermine) [Top Left]
2) argyresthia brockeella (Gold W) [TR]
3) digitivalva pulicariae (Fleabane Smudge) [BL]

Professional wildlife photographers .... don't you get at me. I am not a photographer myself, I am not blessed with a massive zoom or impressive tripod. But it's not what you've got, it's what you do with it that counts - and I did it from distance with my little snapper poking out the bathroom window! A photo of a Great Spotted Woodpecker ... a rare but welcome visitor to our garden birdfeeder.

Stormy weather meant no mothing last night, so here's a featured #moth for #MothMonday that visited the garden July 2022. This is a CHINESE CHARACTER, a rather common, UK-resident moth. It's USP is to mimic a bird-dropping to protect itself from predators, although I think it resembles a tiny porcelain dainty.

Coyote pups exploring. I watched these pups venture further and further from their mother’s watchful eye as the grew. On this day mom was nowhere to be seen.
The litter started off with at least 4 pups, but in the end only 2 survived. I’ve found a few dead pups over the years and it was never clear to me who or what killed them. They share the area with people, dogs, bobcats and traffic in a protected National Park.
