Fun With Language: Literature in Translation
Earlier this week I finished Maria Dahvana Headley's translation of Beowulf. It's a story I know well, having read various translations of the poem over the last couple decades. I loved her translation. There's a mix of modern language and archaic formalities. It's a translation you can feel the fun she had in writing it. In undergrad, I majored in Linguistics. Finished Maria Dahvana Headley's translation of Beowulf tonight. It scratches an itch for me in being a translation that tries to understand what the text tried to be to its original audience and to translate that to the new audience. Here, we have the boasting translated into a frat-boy-esque narration that totally works.
(My favorite translation of Eugene Onegin is the Hofstadter one with little translation puns thrown in here and there.)

After stops that took in the Bodleian Library complex and the Radcliffe Science Library, the last stop on the nostalgia tour was the British Library.
