After stops that took in the Bodleian Library complex and the Radcliffe Science Library, the last stop on the nostalgia tour was the British Library.
(I wrote large chunks of my PhD thesis camped out there, back in the day.)
It feels more important than ever to show appreciation for these wondrous and beautiful institutions.

Unlike the Norton one it uses just a single copy of the original book as its source. Which may mean it is less clear to read in places. But book historian me is a lot happier with this facsimile for authenticity and provenance reasons. And yes we had to look up the bear stage direction. On the observed birthday of William Shakespeare, here’s a very personal reflection by the actor Simon Callow.
He’s one of my favorite actors, but I feel a personal connection because one Sunday morning more than a decade ago, I was in London and spotted him walking briskly toward me. Not wanting to intrude, I wished him “good morning,” with a smile, which he returned.
Not sure, but I think he was on his way to a special service at the Abbey, as he was headed in that direction.
