"The famed 1975 conference about a controversial genetic technology is feted as an example of how scientific self-regulation works. But more significant is what wasn’t discussed.

By the end of the meeting, its participants had agreed to adopt biosafety protocols that are still in force in the United States, and which have hugely influenced similar regulations worldwide. The meeting has become known simply as Asilomar, a byword for how a scientific community came together to forge consensus on a thorny topic. Hundreds of thousands of By-the-wind-sailors (Velella velella; which are an unusual floating colonial athecate hydroid) just blanketing Asilomar this morning 🤯 They're making the waves *thick* with their doomed corpses. There was also a bonus Gulfweed Crab (Planes minutus) hanging around.
