  3. On the lam? No, just admiring those magnificent red towers of what might be the most beautiful suspension bridge in the world. Just traversing it you don't really notice it, even as a classic movie fan, but turn the saturation down, and you realize...it's "Modern Noir".

Captured on San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge by me.

  5. What must Malibu have looked like when it was still wild? Maybe a lot like this shot. Oh, it's lusher and more formidable, the light hits different that far north, but at Shelter Cove's Black Sands Beach, you can still see it..."True California", taken by yours truly last summer.

  7. Here in California, the world comes to life not in the summer, but in the *winter*, when for a few glorious months it looks and feels like you're in some summertime paradise...until you notice how short the days are.

Perhaps the ultimate example I've ever seen, taken outside Santa Barbara in 2023: "How Green is my Valley?".

  15. Yes, it's at a hotel that's owned by Hilton; yes, it's right next to a freeway; but here, in California's wine country, none of that seems to really matter, for here is where the gods' gift to mankind bears fruit. My capture of this ambiance, "Vines of Heaven".

  16. Lately I've been feeling the call of Alaska...the closest I've been to it yet was Cape Flattery, where that first summer's night I saw this, "The Ship at the Edge of the World". Maybe I should have followed it north...maybe I still can...

  19. If you’re snowbound and want an easier place for biking in winter, come visit. When we see tourists on bikes, we let them know: people who bike are our favorite visitors! Although we hope for more winter rain, we can pretty much guarantee you no snow. bikemonterey.org/pipe-in-the-n

If you don’t like the weather here (it’s not Southern California, it’s California’s Central Coast), it’ll change. Photos show changing weather on the Big Sur coast Sunday, December 29. Rain, fog, then sunshine broke through. We shot these at 2:23 pm, 4:40 pm, 5:05 pm. We do miss the years when Big Sur was quiet, had no heavy traffic, no crowds necessitating passes for Pfeiffer Beach, etc. It makes sense that its spectacular beauty summoned millions of new visitors in recent years. bikemonterey.org/big-sur-not-b

  20. Cape Flattery never truly disappoints; even on a less fearsome day such as this, it was still the most intense Pacific Coast spot of all, as I captured a new vantage point I hadn't stepped foot on before, one that made it seem like "The Wood at the Edge of the World".

  22. “Fog, Headlands, Pacific Ocean” — Headlands drop to the edge of the foggy Pacific Ocean coastline at Point Lobos.

This photograph captures several characteristic features of Point Lobos State Reserve and perhaps a bit of the experience of visiting. I photographed from a trail along the north shore of the reserve on a very foggy morning. At times the fog was low enough to partially obscure the view, but here it had risen along the shoreline to offer a clear view of headlands, a cove, a small island, Monterey cypress trees, and the Pacific Ocean disappearing into distant fog…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2024/08/23/fo

  23. “The Old Tree” — An old, gnarled monterey cypress grows along the cliffs of Point Lobos State Reserve.

This Monterey cypress has long been a favorite subject of mine at Point Lobos, but this year I learned something new about it. It has a name. It is known as “The Old Veteran” or “The Old Veteran of Point Lobos.” I discovered this while looking up information on the distribution of Monterey cypress trees, and one source I found included its picture and the name. Further reading turned up an estimate that it is probably 200-250 years old…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2024/08/15/th

  24. “North Shore, Fog” — Monterey cycpres trees top North Shore cliffs on a foggy morning at Point Lobos State Reserve.

This is another photograph from my gloriously-foggy late-July visit to Point Lobos. I made a morning escape from the too-hot inland temperatures, hoping for an hour or two of cool fog on the coast before the fog burned off. I was pleasantly surprised when it stuck around well past noon. I spent a few hours wandering slowly along the north short of Point Lobos in the cool fog, photographing the headlands cliffs, Monterey cypress trees, and the fog-shrouded Pacific Ocean…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2024/08/12/no

  25. “Monterey Cypress, Fog” — Summer fog drifts across monterey cypress trees at Point Lobos State Reserve.

This was a wonderful morning at Point Lobos in more than one way. It was my escape from the oppressive inland heat — here is was 58 degrees with thick fog rolling across the landscape. It was not at all crowded, at least not at first, since I managed to arrive when the reserve opened. I spent the morning ambling slowly along trails near bluffs along the north shore, where Monterey cypress trees cling to the edges of the cliffs above the ocean…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2024/07/27/mo

  26. I call this one "The Ship at the Edge of the World", because when you're out on Cape Flattery on a summer's evening, Pacific air blowing in from three sides, and you see a beacon like this, it really feels like it's the Flying Dutchman, waiting at the gates of the beyond...

A lonely, misty stretch of northern California coast, March 1984.

The spring following my Appalachian Trail hike, I took a long bus ride to Seattle, where I rented an economy car and drove down the Pacific Coast Highway and sometimes even smaller coastal roads to San Francisco.
